Comcast + Yahoo content issue

(sorry for the interruption) Before I go and spend hours on the phone with mind-numbing low-level "support" kids.... Does anyone know about any content caching issues between Yahoo and Comcast? For the past few days I have noticed that news content on http://my.yahoo.com is 2 weeks old when viewed from Comcast's broadband network (2 different locations in Atlanta). This is not true when viewed from the same laptop via dialup or GPRS. I know that my chances are less than 5% in trying to explain this to a customer support person, so I am hoping to glean some advice here on what to do about this. Thanks, -Jim P.

Apparently Cogent had a fiber cut between Santa Clara and Houston which is screwing their network up pretty nicely (I'm seeing 60m of latency between two routers in Chicago). Their internal ticket # is 387128. Is this the second or third this year for them? David

needing switch options

I need to find a few options for switches.. My requirements are based on heavy voip traffic so the switch needs to support a very high pps rate while not as much in the Gbps realms - we're using small codecs. We are looking at supporting > 1M subscribers. Initially, we will be handling media but down the road most of the media will not need to be passed on/across our network. I'd like to get some recommendations from the list as to vendor/models that have been deployed and excellent performance / cost has been achieved. I've looked at the 3com 8807 and the 7757 kits already - I'm not sure they would fit the bill (low pps, fabric speed iffy, fabric fail-over time questionable - that's my impression from reading on their site). Replies off list would probably be best and thanks in advance.

The United States delegation is also advocating similar rights for "webcasters" through which the authors of new works communicate them to the public. Some provisions of the proposed "Treaty on the Protection of Broadcasting Organizations" would merely update and standardize existing legal norms, but several proposals would require Congress to enact sweeping new laws that give private parties control over information, communication, and even copyrighted works of others, whenever they have broadcast or "webcast" the work. The novel policy areas addressed by this treaty go beyond ordinary treaty-making that seeks worldwide adherence to U.S. policy. Instead, this initiative invades Congress prerogative to develop and establish national policy. Indeed, even as Congress is debating how best to protect network neutrality, treaty negotiators are debating how to eliminate it. The threat to personal liberties presented by this treaty is too grave to allow these new policy initiatives be handed over to an unelected delegation to negotiate with foreign countries, leaving Congress with the sole option whether to acquiesce. When dealing with policies that are related to copyright and communications, Congress's assigned powers and responsibility under Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution become particularly important. We urge two important steps. First, the new proposed regulations should be published in the Federal Register, with an invitation to the public to comment. Second, the appropriate House and Senate committees should hold hearings to more fully explore the impact of these novel legal restrictions on commerce, freedom of speech, copyright holders, network neutrality, and communications policy. Americans currently enjoy substantial freedoms with respect to broadcast and webcast communications. Under the proposed treaty, the existing options available to commercial enterprises and entrepreneurs as well as the general public to communicate news, information and entertainment would be limited by a new private gatekeeper who adds nothing of value to the content. Communications policies currently under discussion at the FCC would be impacted. Individuals and small businesses would be limited in their freedom of speech. Copyright owners would find their freedom to license their works limited by whether the work had been broadcast or webcast. The principle of network neutrality, already the subject of congressional hearings, would be all but destroyed. As able as the staff of the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Library of Congress may be, it was never intended that they alone should stake out the United States national policy to be promoted before an unelected international body in entirely new areas abridging civil liberties. Congress should be the first to establish Americas national policies in this new area so that our WIPO delegation will have sufficient guidance to achieve legitimate objectives without impairing Constitutional principles such as freedom of speech and assembly, without impairing the value of copyrights, and without granting to private parties arbitrary power to suppress existing freedoms or burden new technologies. We cannot afford for Congress to wait for the Senate to be presented with a fully formed treaty calling for the enacting of domestic law at odds with fundamental American liberties foreign to American and international legal norms, and that would bring to a close many of the benefits of widespread personal computing and the end-to-end connectivity brought by the Internet. How do you handle client contact for network abuse/malware compaints etc.?

Hello As a sort of addendum to the thread of "Quarantine your infected users spreading malware" I am curious how other handle contact to the users/clients for network security incidents. The question I have is; When someone reports an incident to you about one of your clients (a user or server owner) possibly being infected, having an owned box being used for hacking into other servers or being used to spread malware, how much information do you send/forward on to that user/client to support your case. Is it normal practice to simply forward on unaltered logs sent in by those complaining or do you sanitize them a bit to protect the people notifying you? Do you even send them at all at first or do you simply inform them that a complaint has been received. In short, how much information do you pass on to support yourself and when. Quarantine your infected users spreading malware

Many ISP's who do care about issues such as worms, infected users "spreading the love", etc. simply do not have the man-power to handle all their infected users' population. It is becoming more and more obvious that the answer may not be at the ISP's doorstep, but the ISP's are indeed a critical part of the solution. What their eventual role in user safety will be I can only guess, but it is clear (to me) that this subject is going to become a lot "hotter" in coming years. Aunty Jane (like Dr. Alan Solomon (drsolly) likes to call your average user) is your biggest risk to the Internet today, and how to fix the user non of us have a good idea quite yet. Especially since it's not quite one as I put in an Heinlein quote below. Some who are user/broadband ISP's (not say, tier-1 and tier-2's who would be against it: "don't be the Internet's Firewall") are blocking ports such as 139 and 445 for a long time now, successfully preventing many of their users from becoming infected. This is also an excellent first step for responding to relevant outbreaks and halting their progress. Philosophy aside, it works. It stops infections. Period. Back to the philosophy, there are some other solutions as well. Plus, should this even be done? One of them has been around for a while, but just now begins to mature: Quarantining your users. Infected users quarantine may sound a bit harsh, but consider; if a user is indeed infected and does "spread the joy" on your network as well as others', and you could simply firewall him (or her) out of the world (VLAN, other solutions which may be far better) letting him (or her) go only to a web page explaining the problem to them, it's pretty nifty. As many of us know, handling such users on tech support is not very cost-effective to ISP's, as if a user makes a call the ISP already losses money on that user. Than again, paying abuse desk personnel just so that they can disconnect your users is losing money too. Which one would you prefer? Does the ISP have a right to do this? If the ISP is nice enough to do it, and users know the ISP might. Why not? This (as well as port blocking) is more true for organizations other than ISP's, but if they are indeed user/broadband ISP's, I see this as both the effective and the ethical thing to do if the users are notified this might happen when they sign their contracts. Then all the "don't be the Internet's firewall" debate goes away. I respect the "don't be the Internet's firewall issue", not only for the sake of the cause but also because friends such as Steven Bellovin and other believe in them a lot more strongly than I do. Bigger issues such as the safety of the Internet exist now. That doesn't mean user rights are to be ignored, but certainly so shouldn't ours, especially if these are mostly unaffected? I believe both are good and necessary solutions, but every organization needs to choose what is best for it, rather than follow some pre-determined blueprint.
