I have a client who is experiencing problems with sending mail to AOL. I am not resposible for their email service (yet) but I'd like to know if AOL has changed their policy on anti-spam / mail receipt for their customers (RBL, SORBS, rDNS validation), or if there's a real problem with AOL inbound mail for the past 2-3 days. thanks -e-

APRICOT, for those who don't know, is the Asia Pacific Operations and Technology Conference, very similar in aim and purpose to the NANOG conferences we have here in North America. If you are interested in contributing to the APRICOT programme, and visiting Australia during our summer next year, please read on... philip -- Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies Perth, Western Australia 22nd Feb - 3rd March 2006 The APRICOT 2006 Program Committee is now seeking contributors to the program. This is the main call for Presentations & Tutorials before the final program is fixed. We would like to give people the opportunity to submit their proposals early and to encourage people in the Asia Pacific region who have not previously presented their work to do so. We are looking for people who would like to: * Offer a technical tutorial on an appropriate topic; and/or * Participate in the technical conference sessions as a speaker; and/or * Convene and chair a Birds of a Feather (BOF) session. CONFERENCE MILESTONES: 20 November 2005: Receive all Speaker & Instructor submissions 5 December 2005: Announce Selected Speakers and Tutorials 1 February 2006: All Presentation Materials are received from Speakers & Instructors 22 February to 26 February 2006: Pre-conference Workshops 27 February to 28 February 2006: Tutorials 01 March to 02 March 2006: Conference 03 March 2006: APNIC Meeting PROGRAM MATERIAL ---------------- TUTORIALS: Tutorials are full-day workshops which focus on a particular subject in-depth. You can sign up to give a tutorial and/or conference session presentation by following the instructions at the end of this message for signing up as a speaker or instructor. There will be two days of Tutorials. Tutorials last 1/2 day or a full day. If you have an idea for a tutorial subject that is not listed, please feel free to submit it to us. TECHNICAL CONFERENCE SESSIONS: The Main Conference Program for 2006 will be made up of 2 days with 3 tracks each day (Plus the APNIC and other concurrent AP* org Tracks which is managed by various AP* groups independent of APRICOT). Each Track has three 1.5 hour sessions on Wednesday and four 1.5 hour sessions on Thursday. Each session can have 3 - 4 presentations (therefore allowing 20-30 minutes per speaker) or a panel. Sessions are chaired by persons of appropriate expertise in the subject matter of the session, and will include ample time for questions from the audience. There is a strong orientation to offer core skills and basic knowledge in the tutorials and to address issues relevant to the day-to-day operations of ISPs over the next 12 - 18 months in the conference sessions. IMPORTANT NOTE: ---------------- APRICOT is a TECHNICAL conference and marketing and commercial content is not allowed within the program. The program committee is charged with maintaining the technical standard of APRICOT, and will therefore not accept inappropriate materials. It is expected that the presenter be a technical person and not a sales or marketing person. The audience is extremely technical and expects that the speakers are themselves very knowledgeable. All sessions provide time for questions, so presenters should expect technical questions, and be prepared to deliver insightful and technically deep responses. FUNDING AND SUPPORT Since APRICOT is a not-for-profit event that tries to keep the cost to attendees low, we do not have too much money to pay the costs of speakers. If you belong to a company or organization that can cover you travel expenses, that is a big help. Only in exceptional circumstances of hardship will APRICOT be able to consider assisting with travel expenses of tutorial instructors. Switch advice please

Hello I am looking at aquiring some switches to upgrade a large web site front and backend switching network. I am looking at cisco and HP switches at the moment and would like to hear peoples opinions on them or recommendations for any others. Some of the switches I am looking at are 24 and 48 Port GB (copper) switches and 48 and 24 port 10/100 with GB feed's. (one or two feeds) Also if anyone makes a small (like 8 port) GB switch with GB that routes fast enough to act as a gateway from Gb fiber drop to copper GB feed to other switches. Most of the small switches seem underpowered for such a task. Or am I wrong in this? Thanks so much! Nicole

London: Mobile networks bear blast calls

Via the BBC. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4704359.stm [snip] Mobile phone networks are bearing the weight of calls once more as news of four blasts across London spreads. Vodafone, the largest network, told the BBC News website that it had seen "significantly higher call volumes" than usual following the incidents. A spokesperson said Vodafone was advising people in London to avoid making unnecessary calls, and to send text messages instead. Police has called for anyone with mobile images or video to e-mail them. They have asked that anyone with images relevant to the incident should send them through the www.police.uk website, or send the photos via MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) to 07734 282 288. While some networks are noticing the increase in call traffic others, such as T-Mobile, told the BBC News website that it was still business as usual.
