Hi, team. [ Apologies to those who receive this post in multiple forums. ] The numerous Team Cymru bogon projects have been updated as of 01 APR 2004 to reflect the following IANA allocation made on 01 APR 2004: 85/8 Apr 04 RIPE NCC 86/8 Apr 04 RIPE NCC 87/8 Apr 04 RIPE NCC 88/8 Apr 04 RIPE NCC IANA allocations change over time, so please check regularly to ensure you have the latest filters if you are not using the bogon BGP feed(s). We do announce updates to the bogon projects to sundry lists, such as the bogon-announce list. We can not stress this point strongly enough - these allocations change. If you do not adjust your filters, you will be unable to access perhaps large portions of the Internet. Worse yet, you may end up blocking access for people who transit through you. Please do not blindly apply any filters or blocks to your network without carefully considering the ramifications of doing so. Trying to answer the question anyway: It is clear that there is room for improvement in making these address validation schemes less efficient. I will let the reader make their own opinion whether this would be a good thing or not. It would be a good thing in the sense that it would reduce the spammer's ability to focus spam on known existing email addresses. It would be a bad thing in the sense that in order to reach the same number of valid targets the spammer would then send a lot more email, knowing that large numbers are invalid. The lesser of two evils: let's say that potentially we could force spammers to send 100 times more emails for the same result. Some will. Are we ready to bounce 99% of email traffic? Michel.

From the smart spammer's prospective, sending spam to people that use Pine makes no sense in the first place: people that use Pine are 1,000 times less gullible than the general population WRT to spam, therefore having their email addresses not confirm with cgi or whatever does not change the big scheme of things. I don't know about you, but the volume coming to my various "postmaster" or "administrator" is decreasing, as the ROI of spam sent to these must obviously be very low. In other words: if you're already to the point where you are using a text-mode mail client or disabling HTML and/or other stuff in a GUI client, you are no loss to the spammer if your email does not confirm as valid (because you would not even read it nor buy any of their crud in the first place).

Falsifying business records

Spam is a topic for a different forum, but falsifying business records by forging mail headers is a more general network issue. http://www.oag.state.ny.us/press/2004/apr/apr1b_04.html Carmack was found guilty of stealing the identity of two Buffalo-area residents to open Internet access accounts with EarthLink, an Internet Service Provider (ISP). He was also found guilty of falsifying business records of EarthLink, when he forged the headers of email sent from the EarthLink accounts.

Can someone explain to me (publicly or privately) why someone would send spam with no product to sell, no position to pitch, nothing except text designed to get by a spam filter -- without even HTML to KNOW it got by a spam filter.. For example: From: Joe Legitimate <jlegit(a)university.edu> To: Deepak Jain <deepak(a)ai.net> Subject: [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] [dictionary word] --- EOM --- I don't understand why one would waste the time, if its a test, why would it get out in public? I would like to think I am being naive, but I just don't see the upside unless it were particularly targeted at me or my mailserver to determine our response or response time, etc. Thanks in advance, DJ

To pick on one bulk political mailer, Kintera.Org, mail from info(a)kucinich.us contains a tracking gif, a 1x1, within the html portion of a multipart MIME payload. Voila: <img height=3D'1' width=3D'1' src=3D'http://www.kintera.org/omt/70069677.gif'> Yes I've kevetched to the Kucinich campaign that putting tracking gifs in political marketing is dumb, but to no avail. Of course the html contains more URLs than just the one into Kintera's mail delivery and click-through tracking playpen. Wrong community I know (ASRG is over there) but something like DCC that catches the "twinkle" of a spam's URL payload by nsen niggles me. Eric
