Judge Thomas Carlson ordered Excite@Home to shutdown as of Midnight Eastern time, tonight Friday November 30 2001. Bondholders are free to negotiate a better offer before the shutdown, if they can, to maintain the service.

Looking for a ping plotting tool for *nix

Hey folks. I'm searching for a tool that will continuously (once per second or .5 second) ping every hop on a specified path (or ping a list of hosts) and somehow plot/graph/track packet loss and latency/jitter. Looking for something that can run as a service on Unix, and can do some easy reporting in a tabular or graph form. Thanks for the input. - Dani

Followup British Telecom outage reason

BT is telling ISPs the reason for the multi-hour outage was a software bug in the interface cards used in BT's core network. BT installed a new version of the software. When that didn't fix the problem, they fell back to a previous version of the software. BT didn't identify the vendor, but BT is identified as a "Cisco Powered Network(tm)." Non-BT folks believe the problem was with GSR interface cards. I can't independently confirm it.

a question about the economics of peering

Today, I was approached by *unnamed-ethernet-extension-company*. They extend ethernets between several US and UK peering exchanges. While speaking with them today, thier engineer and I got into a little bit of a disagreement as to why people peer with each other at public exchange points. My belief is that generally speaking, networks meet at public exchange points (such as MAE-*, LINX, AMSIX, AADS, etc) is to exchange traffic with each other more economically (read: save money). His belief is that people will pay a premium to get to an exchange point, because it's worth paying a premium to have 'less hops' between two networks. Essentially, he said that paying more for peering that for transit is typical, and to be expected, and most people accept this. Whats the common opinion on this?

Cox, AT&T, etc could come to a new arrangement to continue service before Midnight (PST as someone pointed out @Home is a California based company). If they don't come to a new arrangement, the company and creditors can cease service at Midnight. The US Bankruptcy Courty handling this case is http://www.canb.uscourts.gov/ They have a section on the "free" part of the web site on the Excite@Home bankruptcy under "Pending Large Chapter 11 Cases." But there is no information. The fee-based PACER system would have the complete text of the judge's order.

Interesting to note that even though the govt is all for getting everyone on the "Information Superhigway", no mention is made of any government sponsored plan to prevent the service from going dark. If this were a provider of POTS, and it was dialtone being turned off, would there would be some scrambling by the govt to prevent it? So to make this somewhat on-topic, what will the advance of VOIP do to SLA requirements? Would this be allowed to happen if customers were using an IP provider for access into their VOIP gateway?
