This is an auto-generated mail on Fri Jul 18 12:00:02 PDT 1997 It is not checked before it leaves my workstation. However, hopefully you will find this report interesting and will take the time to look through this to see if you can improve the amount of aggregation you perform. The report is split into sections: 0) General Status List the route table history for the last week, list any possibly bogus routes seen and give some status on ASes. 1) Gains by aggregating at the origin AS level This lists the "Top 30" players who if they decided to aggregate their announced classful prefixes at the origin AS level could make a significant difference in the reduction of the current size of the Internet routing table. This calculation does not take into account the inclusion of holes when forming an aggregate so it is possible even larger reduction should be possible. 2) Weekly Delta A summary of the last weeks changes in terms of withdrawn and added routes. Please note that this is only a snapshot but does give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly, it is generally a good thing to see a large amont of withdrawls. 3) Interesting aggregates Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of classful routes. If fibers being cut is the culprit here, does going with a supplier like Qwest make sense because their fibers are running down railroad right of ways and, therefore, should be less succeptible to a backhoe digging where it shouldn't be? Or are you looking at other, more secure mediums for the bulk of your traffic?

DC fiber cut: field report

After a hot tip on the location of the fiber cut, and with Map Quest in hand, we went to search out the location of todays 500+ DS3 DC fiber cut. We were looking for a bunch of white vans and pick-ups with guys in hard hats and orange vests along the train tracks in Northern Laurel, MD - our search was fruitfull and within 10 minutes of locating the tracks we had found the scene of the cut. It is located off the Baltimore Washington Parkway at the Route 32 exit about 1/2 mile from the NSA (hmm) along CWX railroad tracks. About 7 vehicles with WorldCom and Wiltel logo's and about 15 people strung out along a dusty portion of the tracks. In the distance a large back hoe and a construction company van, not a good sign. A piece of black cable about the width of a quarter lay strung along the tracks and one piece could be seen sticking out of the dirt, the white innards splayed out. We had found the cut. There was a gentleman with a white hard hat that said "WorldCom" sitting near a pit with another person in hard-hat hunched over a portable work-bench working on a cable. We asked what happened and no one knew, but obviously from the back-hoe and railroad construction in the area, not much explanation was needed. What time did it happen? "About 9am" Who's cable was it? "WorldCom - we lease fiber to all the other carriers". I mentioned we had heard about it on the Internet and everyone seemed to perk up. Yes, they were famous. The scale of the cut was beyond anyones guess. It was a single cable laid in the dirt carrying 144 strands of fiber. How many DS-3's this was could be a lot more then 500 DS3's. As we left it struck me that this cut was not if, but when. And more cuts like it. There was no protection for the cable, no markers of the cable location. I was also left with the impression that once right-aways are cleared, laying cable seems like a relativly cheap operation considering the cost of bandwidth over it's life-time. I wonder if there's a FAQ on becoming a cable maven.. --stb p.s. no estimate on what it will be up.

The TDR tells them the cable distance to the break. Cable distance doesn't directly convert to driving mileage, but at least it narrows the search to a few miles. --eric

WorldCom uses a GIS system they call CBUD (which stands for Call Before You Dig) in a perfect world, a contractor calls WorldCom and notifies of the pending construction. The Geographical Info System then targets the construction site coordinates to the location of the fiber run. A fiber crew is dispatched to the site and stands by to assist. Obviously we don't live in a perfect world. MCI used to drop work gloves printed from planes over construction sites and most carriers send inspection crews regularly over fiber routes and all are actively involved in continuing education with the construction community. Inevitably it always boils down to "Joe Bob" in his Tonka Toy backhoe having a yahoo! of a time jamming a hole and getting it done before "beer o'clock" so he can relax for "Miller Time".
