Here is something which has been troubling my mind lately. The basic question is, how do I turn an in and an out into an aggregate? Here is a scenario: I measure usage on a customer's T1 at my router port. Every 5 minutes a sample the port and figure the average bps both in and out for the last five minutes. Now, I want to make a number that represents the aggregate usage across that port but, I cannot simply add the two ins and outs (as I am doing now) because they were both averages over a period of time. Doing this produces some strange effects which can show nice trends but also lies about the real usage. Perhaps I simply lack the math experience to do this correctly but I can't see a good way to do it. Brian Horvitz WebSecure, Inc.

Looking for a speaker from an ISP offering IP Telephony Services

The focus of this workshop is to provide knowledge to both ISPs and Carriers which are looking at offering enhanced services such as: Fax over IP and Voice over IP. Re: Loss of BGP peering monitoring via SNMP

I know this was already answered, but since I just talked a bit about this in Tampa.... Adjacency traps and adjacency state variables of any kind can be very useful. Since the BGP ones were already posted, I'll just say that similar state variables are available in the OSPF MIB, such as ospfNbrState. Some boxes are capable of sending traps for state transitions of these variables. Similar things are available for other adjacency-like things. For exmaple, pppLinkCurrentState (and doing threshold monitoring on PPP LQM stuff is a horribly good idea wherever you might be using PPP). I also mentioned one reasonable way of watching for link congestion. Correlate link utilization (via if[In|Out]Octets and if[In|Out]Pkts) against if[In|Out]Errors and if[In|Out]Discards. In this last set, in my experience ifOutDiscards is usually more useful than ifInDiscards. Usually, ifOutDiscards (if the agent is doing the right thing) is a good touchstone for congestion; it's incremented when a packet is valid but was dropped for another reason. In my experience, that reason is usually congestion (output queue is full, hence packet is sent to bit bucket). Where available, it's also wise to put queue lengths and drops in the correlation mix here. See the Cisco lsystem table for some of these. However, my advice on queue drops is to stick with MIB-II ifOutDiscards unless you find it erroneous or not really getting you the answer you need. Why? Because you should be able to apply it across most of your devices (including your host-based services if you have any) and not have to use an enterprise MIB which doesn't exist on another vendor's product (and if something similar exists, may not be semantically equivalent). router monitor/configuration tool

based on a recent email about bgp peer monitoring and others over the last few months, we thought this would be a good time to release a tool called rtrmon (router monitor) that we've been working on with vixie enterprises. please see: www.vix.com/rtrmon vixie enterprises provided the development expertise and based the design on the needs of genuity initially. it's fairly generic and extensible. currently it: - monitors bgp sessions and reports failures - monitors cpu usage and reports failures - monitors ospf neighbors - downloads, diffs, and archives cisco configs it's all cisco oriented as that's our primary platform. we'll start a mailing list soon for discussion (next week) but in the short interrim please send mail to myself or danny mcpherson (danny(a)genuity.net) for questions or problems. we'll have this hosted on our own web site(s) sometime next week as well. enjoy. -brett

Please note that this is only a snapshot but does give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly, it is generally a good thing to see a large amont of withdrawls. 3) Interesting aggregates Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of classful routes. (received only) means that soft-reconfiguration is configured for the peer and some policy denied the route so it's not being used - yet. had he did a "sh ip route x.x.x.x" rather than "sh ip bgp x.x.x.x" he would have seen the less specific entry being used. -danny

The question is, why did that route not get withdrawn properly when the BGP session between AS6189 and AS3741 was terminated? This looks very much like the cisco bug that bit Sprint during the AS7007 incident a month or so ago. Hey, Ravi, I thought you fixed that bug? Perhaps AS4005 is not running the fixed code.
