This is an auto-generated mail on Fri Feb 28 12:00:00 PST 1997 It is not checked before it leaves my workstation. However, hopefully you will find this report interesting and will take the time to look through this to see if you can improve the amount of aggregation you perform. The report is split into sections: 0) General Status List the route table history for the last week, list any possibly bogus routes seen and give some status on ASes. 1) Gains by aggregating at the origin AS level This lists the "Top 30" players who if they decided to aggregate their announced classful prefixes at the origin AS level could make a significant difference in the reduction of the current size of the Internet routing table. This calculation does not take into account the inclusion of holes when forming an aggregate so it is possible even larger reduction should be possible. 2) Weekly Delta A summary of the last weeks changes in terms of withdrawn and added routes. Please note that this is only a snapshot but does give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly, it is generally a good thing to see a large amont of withdrawls. 3) Interesting aggregates Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of classful routes. However, Merit, with the assistance of ISI, has started the Route Server Next Generation (RSng) project which provides route server service to participating NAPs. I am trying to understand the Network architecture of the current NAPs and the technology/interoperability/operational issues that they currently face. Thus I have a few questions: 1. Is FDDI still used within NAPs? 2. How prevalent is ATM in the NAPs? What Interfaces are prevalent? What are scheduled to be phased in? 3. Are ATM DS-3 DSUs still used? 4. What are the issues to deal with in peering with the Route Arbiter? 5. What are some current problems facing the NAPs? 6. What are good repositories for NAP information? 7. The customers will then experience something like a 1 minute outage when you renumber. If we are going to start getting into the procedures of HOW to renumber this should likely move to the PIER mailing list. I think if in general people become more interested in HOW to gracefully renumber themselves and their customers instead of worrying about how hard it is to do they would see that while it is work, it isn't really all that hard. What is difficult about renumbering DNS entries? You DO refer to your websites with hostnames don't you? The nameservers themselves are a bitch (since you break all the clients unless you're using dhcp) to renumber, but none of your other services should have problems. What protocols (besides FTP) are you referring to? FTP translators are common enough, and I am not aware of any other user application protocols that transmit IP addresses. You can either renumber once into an RFC 1918 block and use NAT, or you can renumber into a new space every time you change providers. Your customers will understand renumbering once, especially if you can find a way to improve services with it. They'll look elsewhere if it happens more than once or twice, or if they get nothing from it. Benefits of NAT? You can allocate as many addresses as you want to each of your customers, regardless of how many you actually advertise. For instance, if you had a provider with a cluster of servers, they could all have the same external IP, and NAT could do load-balancing between them internally (with a bit of hacking). I'm sure there are other benefits I'm missing. You can minimize the effects of renumbering by doing it at "off" hours, by leaving old addresses active for a month, etc. There are plenty of people who are willing to help you make this as painless as possible. If Microsoft wrote noncompliant DNS code in their stacks, that is an issue to be taken up with them, and something that can probably be incorporated into the next service packs. This is not a NANOG issue or even a provider contract issue. As for broken browsers, most applications cache the hostent after the first gethostbyname() call each session. This is not likely to change, and a 1 month compatibility period will easily be sufficient. After all, have you ever seen Netscape run a month without crashing?

The clients display IP addresses to the user, most likely due to the assumption that most people won't remember them and it helps cut unsolicited CUSeeMe calls. If the client knows that NAT is occurring, IPsec can take that into account and encrypt/authenticate its packets accordingly. This is a bad solution, but I doubt IPsec will become common before IPv6 takes over. I have heard rumors that IPv6 allocations will not be provider-based, so there will be no need for NAT.
