Are you advocating to use real operational nets as
guinea pigs :-)? I feel, at least in this stage which
we know the exsitence of CIDR-traffic-black-holing-ASs,
Eric-jan's approach is a more appropraite one.
Jessica-
We seem to already have a more than adequate supply of volunteers to be
guinea pigs, so I see no reason not to procede with testing on live network
numbers.
There are real sites out there that are starting to suffer from huge routing
tables - let's not delay CIDR deployment any more than necessary.

CA-94:05 CERT Advisory
March 18, 1994
MD5 Checksums
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This advisory gives the MD5 checksums for a number of SunOS files, along
with a tool for checking them. The checksums can be used to assure the
integrity of those files.
The CERT Coordination Center is distributing these checksums because of an
increasing number of incidents in which intruders who gain root access
are modifying system files to install Trojan horses.
Moreover, intruders are modifying files so that they have the same checksum
as the original file. This is possible because the standard "sum" program
that comes with most UNIX systems was designed to detect accidental
modifications to files and is not strong enough to prevent deliberate
attempts to yield a specific checksum. The MD5 algorithm by RSA Data
Security, Inc. is specifically designed to provide checksums that cannot
be deliberately spoofed. We strongly recommend that sites install the
MD5 software and use it to validate system software. More information
on obtaining MD5 is given below.
The list of checksums in Appendix B of this advisory is provided for
your convenience. In addition, we are providing a program that can assist
you in checking your MD5 output against the values in the database.
This checksum list is not complete. We have begun with a number of
the more common locations for Trojan horses that we have seen in
connection with the continuing "sniffer" attacks reported in CA-94:01
"Ongoing Network Monitoring Attacks." We intend to work with
all vendors to expand this list and make more MD5 checksums widely
available for anonymous FTP.
We encourage sites to consider installing a more complete package for
monitoring system integrity, such as Tripwire from the COAST project
(anonymous FTP on ftp.cs.purdue in "/pub/spaf/COAST/Tripwire") or the TIGER
system from TAMU (anonymous FTP on net.tamu.edu in "pub/security/TAMU").
We will maintain a file, CA-94:05.README, that will contain pointers to
additional databases and other updates as they become available.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I. Description
Intruders are installing Trojan horses by modifying system files
often in such a way that a standard checksum on the file generates the
same checksum as the unaltered version.
II. Impact
The Trojan horses give the intruder continued access to a system
and/or hide the intruder's activities.
III. Solution
1. Obtain and install MD5.
The MD5 algorithm is in the public domain, and there are several
programs available that implement it. The algorithm is documented
in RFC 1321, which is available from many archives including
the "/rfc" directory in the anonymous FTP archive at ds.internic.net.
RFC 1321 itself includes source code for implementing the algorithm.
For convenience, that source has been extracted and made available
for anonymous FTP on info.cert.org in the "pub/tools/md5" directory.
2. Run the "md5check" program listed in Appendix A of this advisory.
This program will check a number of system files and note for
each one whether the checksum did or did not match the checksum
of a legitimate version.
If the checksum does match, you can be confident that particular
file has not been modified by an intruder. Note this does not mean
the file is the most recent version for your system - only that
it was in fact distributed by Sun.
If the checksum DOES NOT match, consider these possible reasons:
1) The file may be legitimate but not included in this database.
(Remember, the database is not complete.) To check this
possibility, compare the file against the original distribution
media. You may want to add the correct checksum to your copy
of the database.
2) You may have made local modifications to the file at your site.
To check this possibility, compare the file to a known good
version. You may want to add the correct checksum to your copy
of the database.
3) The file may be a Trojan horse installed by an intruder.
We encourage you to replace this file with a known good version,
and check for additional signs of compromise.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The CERT Coordination Center gratefully acknowledges the help of CIAC
and, in particular, Steve Weeber of CIAC for providing us with an initial
version of the "md5check" script and Tony Bartoletti for an initial
checksum database. We also wish to thank SUN Microsystems for supplying
checksum information.

The following program is a "nawk" script that can be run against
the list of checksums "md5_sun.v1" in Appendix B:
% nawk -f md5check md5_sun.v1
This program along with a man page and the database below,
are available by anonymous FTP from info.cert.org in the
"pub/tools/md5check" directory.

## Checksum Table for Selected SunOS Binary Files (v1: 3/17/94)
##
## PLEASE NOTE: The entries included in this table do not represent complete
## coverage of all released versions of these files.
## In particular, checksum data for outdated patch releases is
## limited.
##
## Failure to match a checksum for a given file does not
## necessarily indicate the presence of a Trojan binary.
## Failure indicates that the file's checksum did not match any
## contained in this table. The file's authenticity should be
## verified against distribution media or local modifications.
##
## Success at matching a file's checksum indicates that the
## corresponding file is free from tampering.

Are you advocating to use real operational nets as
guinea pigs :-)? I feel, at least in this stage which
we know the exsitence of CIDR-traffic-black-holing-ASs,
Eric-jan's approach is a more appropraite one.

The only third-party routes i'm getting from 690 at FIX-W are
from AS 60 (DARPA) and AS 568 (DCA).

On Tuesday morning (March 22) at 05:00 EST, we will remove the AS690
default by changing the configuration on washington2.dante.net to stop
announcing default to CNSS57. This message serves as early notice to
providers who are encouraged to submit NACRs for these class-less nets
that are intended to be announced to AS690. We observe that there are
currently (80) class-less nets that are being announced to AS1133 over
MAE-East that have *NOT* all been configured (perhaps by choice) to
AS690.
Following this change, we might receive inquiries about lost or
changed connectivity of the following forms:
1. Change/Loss of connectivity that would not have been supported
with appropriate configuration, but was triggered by default
of AS690->AS1133. This is not a problem.
2. Change/Loss of connectivity due to class-less nets that are
intended to be announced to AS690 but have not yet been
configured in the PRDB. Service providers might wish to
submit NACRs for these nets to Merit before the Tuesday
morning.
3. Change/Loss of connectivity due to class-less nets that are
configured and announced to AS690, but become unreachable for
some reason by other AS690 peers (e.g. non-default, non-CIDR
peers). At this stage, this is unlikely, but it is possible
and so we will watch for it.

This RFC describes methods to preserve IP address space by not
allocating globally unique IP addresses to hosts private to an
enterprise while still permitting full network layer connectivity
between all hosts inside an enterprise as well as between all public
hosts of different enterprises. The authors hope, that using these
methods, significant savings can be made on allocating IP address
space. For the purposes of this memo, an enterprise is an entity
autonomously operating a network using TCP/IP and in particular
determining the addressing plan and address assignments within that
network.
This memo provides information for the Internet community. This memo
does not specify an Internet standard of any kind. Distribution of
this memo is unlimited.
This announcement is sent to the IETF list and the RFC-DIST list.
Requests to be added to or deleted from the IETF distribution list
should be sent to IETF-REQUEST(a)CNRI.RESTON.VA.US. Requests to be
added to or deleted from the RFC-DIST distribution list should
be sent to RFC-REQUEST(a)NIC.DDN.MIL.
Details on obtaining RFCs via FTP or EMAIL may be obtained by sending
an EMAIL message to rfc-info(a)ISI.EDU with the message body

Requests for special distribution should be addressed to either the
author of the RFC in question, or to admin(a)DS.INTERNIC.NET. Unless
specifically noted otherwise on the RFC itself, all RFCs are for
unlimited distribution.

Hi,
when finding trouble in connection with CIDR deployment (reachability), I'm
not too sure whether using "finger pointing in public places" is the best
approach... Other suggestions are welcome. On the other hand, these
wrinkles really needs to be sorted out, so here goes:
I can't reach ecn.purdue.edu from within my CIDR block (129.240/15, host
129.241.1.99) -- it seems that Purdue University has a problem with their
default route, and that they're not running BGP-4. This is part of their
routing table -- I think the next hop for the default route is screwed up
(that is, if the SNMP agent doesn't lie to me):
% snmpnetstat 192.5.102.3 public -rm
Routing tables
Destination RouteMask Gateway Flags Interface RouteProto
default 0x00000000 0.0.0.0 U if0 Local/Static
6 0xff000000 enss152.gw.purdu UG if0 BGP
7 0xff000000 enss152.gw.purdu UG if0 BGP
...
Can somebody please fix this?

REPORT CHANGES: (Updated March 1, 1994)
TRANSITION TO GATED: The "routed" routing software on AS 690 was
successfully replaced by "gated" on the morning of February 28. The routed
files that used to be posted on nic.merit.edu:nsfnet/announced.networks
are no longer produced; a full set of gated configuration files is
now posted on that directory.
CIDR: The first non-classful networks appeared in the PRDB, in its
reports, and in the gated configuration files on March 1. NACRs for
aggregates may be submitted to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu starting Friday,
March 4. Please be sure to use the new version of the networks
template from nic.merit.edu:nsfnet/announced.networks/template.net.v7.1 .
The archived discussion list "db-disc(a)merit.edu" exists for discussion of
PRDB issues. Send a message to "db-disc-request(a)merit.edu" to subscribe.
--Dale Johnson (dsj(a)merit.edu)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please send all requests for configuration changes to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu
using the NSFNET configuration forms. The forms are available on-line
from the nic.merit.edu machine. Use ftp and the anonymous login to get on the
machine. Do a "cd nsfnet/announced.networks" and get the files template.net,
template.net.README, template.gate, and template.as.
*** Note: As of March 1, 1994, NSFNET AUP NACRs must use the template.net
*** (NACR) version 7.1, or the NACR will be returned unprocessed.

>P.S. Believe me, you wouldn't want to send back net unreachables for all

cisco won't send more than one unreacheable a second :-)
Still, peering with ICM may be a good idea; there is no reason
to bounce packets off ENSS...

Whoops - it's been a long day. If AS690 points default, that does not
solve this problem......
