REPORT CHANGES: (Updated May 31, 1994)
Anyone considering configuring an aggregate into the PRDB (and you all
should be!) is encouraged to pre-check that aggregate by typing the command:
whois -h prdb.merit.edu 'aggchk <agg>'
(where "<agg>" is the aggregate description). This command will list
all of the other entries in the PRDB that are more specific routes of <agg>,
as well as any aggregates all ready configured that contain <agg>. The
output includes the AUP and announcement lists of each of the nets printed,
with discrepancies flagged. This is the same program that we use for
sanity-checking the NACRs that you submit.
The archived discussion list "db-disc(a)merit.edu" exists for discussion of
PRDB issues. Send a message to "db-disc-request(a)merit.edu" to subscribe.
--Dale Johnson (dsj(a)merit.edu)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please send all requests for configuration changes to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu
using the NSFNET configuration forms. The forms are available on-line
from the nic.merit.edu machine. Use ftp and the anonymous login to get on the
machine. Do a "cd nsfnet/announced.networks" and get the files template.net,
template.net.README, template.gate, and template.as.
*** Note: As of March 1, 1994, NSFNET AUP NACRs must use the template.net
*** (NACR) version 7.1, or the NACR will be returned unprocessed.

AS690 CIDR Squeezings Report: 8912 Nets, 99 ASs, 1834 Aggregates
-----------------------------------------------------------------
8912 (87%) of the ever-announced more-specific routes within aggregates have
been withdrawn. 159 of those were withdrawn within the last week.
92 the week before that.
359 the week before that.
99 ASs have registered aggregates in the PRDB.
93 of those are announcing aggregates.
74 have withdrawn at least one more specific route.
1834 Aggregates are configured.
1537 of these were Top-Level Aggregates (not nested in another aggregate).
1209 of these are being announced to AS690.
951 of those have at least one subnet configured (the other 258 may be saving
the Internet future subnet announcements).
873 have stopped announcing at least one configured more specific route.
863 have stopped announcing half of their configured more specific routes.
806 have stopped announcing most (80%) of their more specific routes.

Matt:
I wish you were coming. Your input has
been most valuable on this topic.
We'll look for you on the MBONE.
We've looked at the migration sequence given by
various regionals. So've we've run one forecast
because that's what people predicted would happen.
If someone from MCI or anyone else wants to send
me a list of how you think the Transition will
go, please do! Merit's discussion of the
transition plans are on the Merit's web server.
Also, perhaps someone from MCI can comment publically
on when they plan to connect to FIX-East or FIX-West,
or MAE-EAST. Again, the talk is based on what people
have suggested to me "might" happen. At this point,
without MCI/Sprintlink connection to FIXes (East/West)
I believe the traffic goes through ANSnet.
Any information to the contrary would be nice.
The talk is based on two sources of data
collect for AS 690, ANSNet:
1) traffic statistics
2) 15 minute peak data
Since we have no traffic statistics for
interconnections such as FIX-East
Fix-West, or the CIX where traffic does not
go to NSFNet regionals - we do not have
these in our traffic matrix.
Hope this helps. John Scudder's working on
this with me so send mail to him too!

FYI-
For those that don't appreciate the consequences of using unproven
technology. The good news on Mae-East is packet loss is down to 15%
from 40%? :-(
Congratulations to Sprint for picking a technology that is known to
work for the Sprint NAP. FDDI works. We'll see how the others NAPs
do, though I'm not encouraged by test results so far.
Curtis
BTW - this is Mae-East (the MFS bridged ethernet), not Mae-East+ (the
bridged FDDI).

Subject: Moderately urgent: getting rid of annoying packet losses

Sender: smd(a)tiny.sprintlink.net
The Magnum boxes are *very* unhappy with inter-packet gaps of less
than about 23 microseconds, and drop back-to-back packets like
superheated rocks.
We have a kludge which will help until the MFS hardware gets fixed.
Those of you running one Cisco with EIP 10-0 microcode or better should
set the transmitter-delay of your MAE-EAST interface to 96 (0x60).
This will dramatically reduce the packet loss across MAE-EAST.
IMPORTANT: Those of you who have more than one box on your ethernet
drop to MFS will need to a/ acquire EIP 171-1 from Cisco and load
it in then b/ set the transmitter-delay of each of your MAE-EAST
interfaces to 0x360 (864).
The new microcode has apparently been well tested, and is doing the
right thing for icm-dc-1.icp.net and sl-dc-6.sprintlink.net (drops
to most of you have fallen from 40% to much less than 15%). It
works by assigning new meanings to the upper 8 bits of the transmitter-
delay value; this particular setting will delay the transfer of
the packet to the datalink controller when there is traffic
on the wire, then require an additional quiet time of 30usec,
after which there will be the standard 9.6 usec IEEE 802.3 delay.
(The original intent apparently was to avoid drops when bursting
ethernet traffic encounters collisions by backing off on handing
the packet to the datalink layer; the application here is not quite
exactly what was intended, but definitely helps us).
Each of your routers attached to MAE-EAST must run the new EIP 171-6
microcode and have the 0x360 transmitter-delay setting.
Thanks to Robert M. Broberg of Cisco for the code.
Those of you without Ciscos will have to come up with a similar hack
somehow.
Sean.
P.S.: We are *very* keen on PSI, NETCOM, and MCI to implement the
change, especially PSI. We aren't having problems with anyone
else we exchange traffic with at MAE-EAST (other than Dante
AS1133, but that's not a Cisco) but everyone would probably
benefit from the upgrade anyway. Try pinging each of your peers
in 192.41.177 a hundred or so times.

CA-94:14 CERT Advisory
October 19, 1994
Trojan Horse in IRC Client for UNIX
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The CERT Coordination Center has learned of a Trojan horse in some copies of
ircII version 2.2.9, the source code for the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client
for UNIX systems. Reports we have received thus far indicate that the corrupt
code was available as early as May 1994. The Trojan horse provides a back door
through which intruders can gain unauthorized access to accounts of IRC users.
Intruders are actively exploiting this back door. If you obtained ircII 2.2.9
from any site in May or later, you may be vulnerable.
Because it is unknown how far the corrupt version of the IRC client has
propagated and because intruders may have corrupted other versions, the CERT
staff recommends obtaining and installing ircII version 2.6.
Because no special privileges are needed to install and run the IRC source
code, any user on your system may have installed the corrupt code. Thus, we
also recommend that you inform your users of this potential problem and its
solution.
As we receive additional information relating to this advisory, we will place
it, along with any clarifications, in a CA-94:14.README file. CERT advisories
and their associated README files are available by anonymous FTP from
info.cert.org. We encourage you to check the README files regularly for
updates on advisories that relate to your site.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I. Description
A Trojan horse was found in some copies of the source code for
the Internet Relay Chat client for UNIX systems, ircII version
2.2.9. Intruders are actively exploiting this Trojan horse.
The Trojan horse creates a back door and enables intruders to
gain unauthorized access to accounts of IRC users. If IRC is run
from a system account, such as root or bin, the Trojan horse
enables intruders to gain unauthorized access to the system
account. In addition, because it is possible to compile,
install, and run IRC source code without special privileges, any
user on your system may have installed corrupt code.
The source code containing the Trojan horse was available from
many FTP sites as early as May 1994 (at this time, we do not have
a specific date).
II. Impact
Remote users can gain unauthorized access to any account running
the IRC client, including a system account if it is running IRC.
III. Solution
If you want to try to determine whether your copy of ircII contains the
Trojan horse, perform a search on the IRC client to find the strings JUPE
or GROK. For example,
% strings /usr/local/bin/irc | grep 'JUPE|GROK'
If the strings JUPE or GROK are present in the IRC client, your source
code may contain the Trojan horse. Keep in mind, however, that back doors
can easily be changed to respond to other words, so you may be vulnerable
even if you do not find JUPE or GROK.
Thus, even if you believe that your IRC source code is clean, we urge you
to install ircII version 2.6, the most recent version of IRC. Also,
the maintainer of the code reports that version 2.6 contains many bug
fixes and extra portability.
IRC source code is available by anonymous FTP from many locations,
including the following:
sungear.mame.mu.oz.au:/pub/irc
alpha.gnu.ai.mit.edu:/ircII (2.6 not available as of 10/19/94)
ftp.funet.fi:/pub/unix/irc/ircII
coombs.anu.edu.au:/pub/irc/ircii

IV. Informing Users
Because users may have installed IRC source code on their own, we
recommend informing all your users about the Trojan horse and the new
version of IRC.
In addition, you may want to find any user-installed copies of IRC that
may be vulnerable. If so, you could use the find command to locate these
binaries. As an example, the following command will enable you to find
all files named "irc" in a subdirectory of /usr/users:
% find /usr/users -name irc -type f -print

While we are at this, where can I find trhese tools? Can someone
give me a URL? I'm in desperate need of tools that will help me
