A recent posting on comp.dcom.cisco suggested that you can't have a 7-bit subnet. For example, 192.239.0.0 255.255.254.0 should be equal to two class C networks, but the two "subnets" would be the all zeros and the all ones subnets. Apparently this goes against the Host Requirments RFC. Would this be a vaild CIDR route? Thanks.... Eric, As I replied privately, I believe this will work with CIDR "supernetting" because no "all-nets" broadcast addresses are defined. This issue may be more sticky as we move toward a truely classless addressing plan, though - consider a CIDR block which is carved out of a "class A" network, for example... To my knowledge, No Unix vendor currently has full support of variable subnet masks, the exception being the BSD 4.4 release. I have pointed a few vendors at fixes to these problems, but I'm not sure if they have yet made it into releases. The CSRG folks did not manage to rip out all the assumptions about class so multiple interfaces to the same `natural' network with different masks will not work. Other aspects of variable subnet masks do work, such as discontiguous subnets and supernet aggregates. Even BSD 4.4 is not capable of having an interface on a subnet of a supernet whose mask is more general than the natural. Although most of the fixes (to the kernel) are rather minor. I did discuss this with the CSRG folks, but it was too late to make it into the 4.4 release. I don't think I was successful in convincing them to remove the idea of the `all-nets' broadcast. The last remaining holdout of `natural' networks in BSD 4.4 is that TCP uses it to calculate an MSS. This could be solved by MTU discovery and the glue necessary to get TCP to use it. Independent of kernel support, I have (hopefully) removed all knowledge of networking class from the core of gated. It is only present in protocols where it is required, RIPv1, EGP, BGPv2&3 and DCN HELLO. A snapshot of this code is available from gated.cornell.edu as gated 3.1Alpha1. A fair bit of work is necessary before this becomes a release, but it is there if you would like to play with it. Jeff

Dear Regional Techs: We are pleased to announce that the transition from older NACR versions to the new NACR 7.0 has been smooth and successful. We would like to thank you for your excellent cooperation in this continued improvement of the NSFNET configuration process. Please let us know if there are any problems with the new template or the configuration process. Send mail to autonacr(a)merit.edu. This message contains a couple of announcements/clarifications about the new NACR. (1) Class C Block Submission: It is allowed to submit a block of consecutive Class C addresses in a NACR. Also, in order to use this feature of the NACR, network names, as registered with the InterNIC, need to consist of a "common-prefix" and "consecutive-number" (e.g., "ICM-" and "2"), and values for the other fields must be ***identical***. Otherwise, each ip number should be submitted separately as usual. (2) CC Related AS's: The majority of the regional techs have been consistent in doing so and we really appreciate that. However, to a few requestors who have not constantly followed this rule, we ask you: please copy all related AS's when you submit a NACR to help expedite its processing. Your cooperation is really important and necessary for us to maintain the service quality as we are faced with the ever-increasing number of configuration requests. Related AS's are automatically cc'd when you use the autonacr program on merit.edu. Question on the registration of addresses from an assigned block

CICNet has several blocks of address from which we assign numbers. Some of the sites to whom we have assigned numbers have requested that the NIC register their DNS machines for inverse mapping of the addresses. The NIC recently sent the message below to one of those sites. My question is: Are other providers that have blocks they are assigning addresses out of removing those address from their own blocks (in the words of the NIC)? In other words, is everyone sending to the NIC the information for the site that gets a specific address? If the addresses are taken out of the block and assigned to the site, then it pretty much makes a moot point of the arguements about taking back address if a customer moves to another provider.
