It absolutely is the same issue. Rural electrification and rural telecommunications are the same model, neither one happened without govt subsidies because the economics don't work any other way. Same kind of engineering challenges when you build a large expensive distribution system for a very inexpensive product (kilowatts or megabits don't matter much). The ROI is really difficult unless you have a captive audience. That is why you don't see big CLEC build outs. Why pay to put in a fiber cable with a 100 year lifecycle to a customer that might move and/or dump you in the next six months? The churn will kill you. You cannot amortize the cost of the infrastructure within any reasonable time frame. Go ahead and tell a VC that your infrastructure has a 10 - 20 year ROI (if you are lucky) and see if you get laughed out of the room. The WISPs and satellite guys are just like putting in windmills and solar panels to avoid the power company. Some will do it but most don't like the inconvenience or complexity of it. A fringe group at best. Telecom is even worse that power because there is a very good chance that your infrastructure will be obsolete or devalued before it pays for itself. Look at how DWDM technologies murdered the dark fiber markets and oceanic fiber links. Global Crossing ring a bell anyone? In some municipalities the city owns the infrastructure now but they want that big payday from the award of the exclusive contract so there really is not much competition there. In the "open" power market most cities find out that the most viable option turns out to be the incumbent power company that originally built out the infrastructure in the first place. Chicago was a major failure of the open power market when all of the "competitors" had huge price swings and everyone went back to the incumbent Commonwealth Edison. The real motivator was that the city really just wanted a way to get in between the customers and power company, they just could not resist the revenue. [with apologies to those who see this on multiple lists] Call For Presentations The 28th DNS-OARC Workshop will be hosted by ICANN in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and will take place on March 8th and 9th immediately before ICANN61 (March 10th - 15th) [*] The Workshop's Program Committee is now requesting proposals for presentations. All DNS-related subjects are welcome. The first day of the workshop will start with a Members-only session which will include reports on DNS-OARC's activities. If you are an OARC member and have a sensitive topic that you wish to present during that session those can be accommodated. A timeslot will also be available for lightning talks (5-10 minutes) on day two of the workshop for which submissions will be accepted on the first day of the workshop, until 4pm. Static Routing 172.16.0.0/32

Greetings, A colleague of mine has static routed 172.16.0.0/32 to a usable IP address, to have a single known IP address be static routed to a regions closest server. While I understand the IP address does work (pings and what not), I don't feel this should be the proper IP address used, but something more feasible like a usable IP in a dedicated range (172.31.0.0/24 for example). I would to hear everyone's thoughts on this, as this the first IP address in an RFC1918 range. UPnP/IPv6 support in home routers?

Folks, Anyone can comment on the UPnP support for IPv6 in home routers? Those that I have checked have UPnP support for IPv4, but not for IPv6 -- even when the home router does otherwise support IPv6. Looking at UPnP itself, it seems to allow opening holes at the IGD, but on a fully-specified (local ip, local port, remote ip, remote port) basis, which kind of sucks -- as one would want to be able to whitelist all ports for a given IP address, or at least (local ip, local port). IPv4 /24 Broker or no broker

Just looking for info. I know there are a lot of brokers, but is that a good (easy and quick) way to sell a /24 ? We're renumbering and plan to free up a /24. My boss is asking how much we could roughly expect to get for it, and the fastest/easiest way to 'sell' the block. It's a single /24, in the ARIN region (not part of a larger allocation). Suggestions? Tim

What to do about BGP Hijacks

Some carriers view measures to improve routing security as a hinderance rather than as a safeguard to enable business. The BGP protocol itself has no inherent safety mechanisms, so the network operator has to ensure adequate layers of protection are implemented on the boundary between their own network and the Internet. Normalcy bias may play a role, I see carriers target short term gain by heavily relying on the assumption that there will never be any misconfigurations or malicious attacks. Of course yesterday’s incident shows otherwise. For many networks the topic of routing security becomes a priority, only after they've suffered the consequences of an incident. In the long term, the best way to protect against this type of BGP hijacking is to require your connectivity suppliers to implement relevant security measures. Also require full incident reports after BGP hijacks through your provider or IXP have been observed. The moment it becomes socially unacceptable to operate an Internet network without adequate protections in place, there is economic incentive to view routing security efforts as a competitive advantage rather than a nuisance. Consider voting with your wallet, this applies to both IP transit carriers and IXP route server operators. Ask your suppliers what they are doing to prevent BGP hijacks. Ticketmaster?

Can somebody from ticketmaster contact me off list? These arbitrary blocks are getting ridiculous, and we continue to field a large number of customer complaints from this. Also not impressed with front end customer support continuing to lay blame at the service provider's feet and spread misinformation to end users so they walk away washing their hands for a situation created by ticketmaster (*Oh, you must be sharing your IP with everyone else in your area*) Secondly, if anybody's had luck actually waking somebody up with some sort of sway or pull at ticketmaster, shoot me a line off list if you could. Earthlink contact? PTR record issue

Does anyone have a contact at Earthlink? Earthlink is blocking an email server because of a PTR record issue. However all our testing shows that reverse DNS is setup correctly. Thank you. -- Romel Jacinto
