I got back on the Sprint list, my subscription having vanished, and Sprint list has improved a lot. CNN and http://www.news.com/ still seem to "scoop" most providers though. > o For overall info, Stan Barber is running an outage mailing list. I just checked my subscription, and I think I'm still subscribed to it. But I haven't seen anything posted on outage-discuss(a)academ.com since last year. The last thing I remember was a brief announcement of Craig's Inter-Provider Notification web pages. The outage list hosted by dal.net seems to have more traffic, although a lot of it obviously involves dal.net IRC servers.

Is anyone aware of *specific* cache sites which forcefully ignore page expiration in a way which would throw off content providers' hit counting? If so, I would like to talk with the cache admin to understand a few things. randy

This really depends on how important you are to your provider as well. We're a fairly large customer for at least one of our ISPs, so they tend to tell us about things as they happen (we also have a "bottom line" requirement here to be up, so we active reroute traffic from one ISP to another as things happen). In reality, it's T3 customers and up that get this kind of service, and then only be special arrangement. While every written peering agreement I've seen includes a paragraph about notifying other providers about scheduled and unscheduled outages; it is rare in customer agreements. Unlike the telephone, electrical, or nuclear industries; there is no government reporting requirements. In the 'new' privatized Internet, it is up to you to negotiate with your provider and for providers to negotiate with each other. I've talked to a number of managers at large and small providers. They say they don't see any "real" customer demand for this. "Real" being defined in management terms "affecting the bottom line." The response for the engineers at those providers is also fairly predicatable. The engineers say "Would you rather we spend the time fixing the problem, or telling you there is a problem?" Fortunately there is a wide range of providers. Internet outages

Here's a question about the content of nanog (the list)... I was originally pointed to nanog as a place to hear about Internet outage/problems. Well, so far (over about a month), I think I've seen two messages that were relayed from Sprint about more-or less real-time problem statuses. So, here's the question: is there any good (better :-) way to get real-time (or so) notification of nationwide or local problems? My point is that I run IP connectivity for a company of 200 heavy Internet users. Almost daily they ask (whiningly...) " I can't get to foo.edu. What's up" (or it's "Awful slow getting to foo.edu..."). Any good (timely and valid way) to tell the status of the 'net? (Now I do know about the Internet Weather sites, but I was originally looking for more along the Sprint announcements from all major network providers saying that there was trouble on the East Coast, etc. I'm not sure the Internet Weather site tells you the same thing, especially not real-time... Any pointers? Thanks! (Now, I'm not saying the list hasn't been informative, especially the dozens of messages about the DNS wars and NANOG politics! :-) I joined the list right then and stuck it out and glad to see it calmed down! --- Lee Sweet leesweet(a)propellernet.com

The .US Domain and NSI

I was under the impression that NANOG members were not interested in domain name issues. Since there appears to be a lot of discussion on the NANOG list about the .US domain, I am posting the following. Since I developed <http://comm.unety.net> which has over 23,000+ cities in the U.S. I feel that I have some knowledge about these matters. Some of the other things I have helped to develop during the past 20 years are listed below. I hope that people note that we do not charge people to be webmasters for Comm.unety.net. For some cities, people stand in line to get a shot at the job. It is a communety service. I plan this to be one of my last postings to NANOG. I am getting very tired of being accused of being a pirate and other things. I wish all of you the best of luck with your networking experiences and I hope that you all realize that your group is only as good as the least ethical members among you. I once proposed that all 50 states have a mini-InterNIC and that each state's .US SLD be delegated to that "StateNIC" for the good of the people in that state. I also tried to save all of the Cities in Illinois from the domain "grabbers" ,at no charge, but Jon Postel made sure that did not happen by making arbitrary rules such as people could not have more than 500 names or 50 in one state. The USC/ISI mail list archives have exchanges between Postel and his students documenting his actions to thwart my attempts to save Illinois cities last Fall. Returning to the InterNIC... When the InterNIC was formed, it was supposed to have three companies working together in a cooperative manner to provide the largely public service of domain name and IP allocation management. One of the companies (General Atomic) was supposed to be the NIC of NICs and was supposed to develop more InterNIC clones. This did not happen because the three companies did not cooperate. The three companies were not able to cooperate and the NSF was not able to manage them.[2] Because of the lack of cooperation, one of the companies (General Atomics) was defunded. This left NSI and AT&T as the remaining contractors. Since that time NSI has agressively positioned itself to be synonymous with the InterNIC when in fact the InterNIC is nothing more than a name for a cooperative arrangement managed by the U.S. Government. In my opinion, there are several reasons why the companies were not able to cooperate. One reason is that NSI really wanted the contract all to themselves from the beginning.[3] They say that in their proposal. Another reason is that Jon Postel was paid by NSI and that creates a conflict of interest which no one seems to want to discuss.[4] Some claim that NSI would have never obtained the NSF contract without Jon Postel's name. As a result, NSI is beholding to Jon Postel and Jon Postel controls the Root Name Servers that NSI operates. This conflict of interest impacts the .US Top Level Domain because as noted by Mark Kosters [5], the NSF PI of the InterNIC contract, NSI has been funding the operation of the .US Top Level Domain. All of these arrangements have lead to a situation where NSI and Jon Postel have worked closely together for several years to ensure that NSI has a monopoly over its operations and Jon Postel has his own Top Level Domain to play with. Other companies and people with research interests have been blocked from having new Top Level Domains added by Jon Postel in his elusive role as the IANA. [This is well documented in the newdom archives although some of the incriminating postings have mysteriously disappeared.] The history is clear, the money that has changed hands has been well documented and now the U.S. Government is beginning to investigate all of the issues surrounding Domain Name management and IP address allocations. In the next few months, various government agencies have announced they will be holding open forums to collect input on these subjects. Handling DNS for temporary address pools

Autonet uses temporary addresses for its dialin users. The good news is that we're approaching 50,000 ports. The bad news is that this equates to 100,000 DNS database entries (forward and reverse). We're running BIND 4.9.3. Since the address <-> name mapping is deterministic (the address can be derived from the name string, and the name string from the address) it should be possible to hack BIND to recognise these addresses and respond. Has anyone done anything like this? For that matter, how do most people handle temporary address pools? Do they even bother with DNSing them? -- David L.
