[ROUTING] Settle a pointless debate - more commonly used routing protocol in total deployments - OSPF vs IS-IS

Hi, First time poster looking for some input on a debate and I apologise if I've done this completely wrong, but I don't think my colleague will be convinced until he hears it from this community. Granted I'm relatively green when it comes to networking, but it was my understand that other than BGP, the most widely used/implemented IGP would be OSPF. However, my colleague insists that I'm 100 percent wrong and that is IS-IS. I want to be clear, I'm not debating which protocol is better or worse, as they both have their strengths and weaknesses and ultimately it comes down to several factors based on a particular use-case on which routing protocol is the best way forward for a network. However in saying that, I believe that, when it comes to sheer numbers of where an IGP is implemented, OSPF is far more widely used in the world today, whether it be in small to medium to large businesses, Enterprise networks and even Service Provider networks (where as per my understanding, is where IS-IS really shines) I understand that this isn't really quantifiable, but I would like to get the opinions/experiences from this list and see what the outcome of this question is out of sheer curiosity. A survey about networking incidents

Hi Nanog, We all know that networks are at the heart of many of the systems we use today. When these systems break, the underlying networks are often the first suspects. Networks are hard to diagnose and they are most likely to be blamed for problems even if they are completely healthy. As networking engineers, we have all seen cases where another part of the system was causing an issue but the network was held the suspect until the problem was resolved. We are researchers from Harvard and The University of Pennsylvania who are interested in understanding this problem and its impact better in order to build a solution. Our goal is to be able to quickly rule out the network as a root cause for incidents in order to be able to speed up diagnosis and also to improve operator efficiency. We are interested in learning the answer to a few questions. Specifically, we would like to know: How often do you see problems where the network is blamed but after investigating you find the problem to be caused by some other part of the system? How often have you had incidents where the cause of the incident was outside of the boundary of your organization? How much do you think fixing this problem can help you and your organization more quickly diagnose problems? We have created a *very* short survey to be able to get an operator's perspective on these questions. It should take less than 15 minutes to finish. The findings should help us as well as the research community at large to be able to build a solution that can benefit all types of networks, of different sizes, to improve how they do the diagnosis. We will be presenting the results of this anonymous survey in a scientific article later this year. We will report back our research once it's finished. IPv6 NAT64

I know this might be off topic but hopefully not too far off. I heard rumors that there are ISPs out there running IPv6 only networks where the clients can still get to the IPv4 world without the $30,000 plus dollar expense of buying a NAT64 appliance to service 4,000 plus customers. DWDM 10ms failover

I'm looking for some real world feedback on 10ms DWDM failover times from Omaha to Denver on 10Gbps transmission waves. I have seen several documents that report 10 ms failure detection time but I suspect the failover mechanism takes some time to react and propagate the failed state across multiple nodes in what is probably at least 600 mile cable routes with multiple nodes along the way.
