Tom, My suggestion is to enable the full DS3 and have each router traffic-shape to 6M on the neighboring interfaces. Rate-limit on the input of your router to disallow the customer from sending you more than the limit. Remember that for the most part rate-limiting polices, where traffic shaping performs more buffering and shaping. Cogent's claim of MFN fiber issues between PHL and DCA

Hello, Can anyone confirm claims from Cogent that there is an MFN fiber issue between PHL and DCA that creates 10-15% packet loss? Simple test are pointing at the Cogtent not having enough capacity between PHL and DCA. According to Cogent that issue had been happening for several days now. Alex

pon's and ethernet to the home

Hi, I've been reading a little about passive optic networks and the idea is very good from my stand point. As far as I have understood, the idea is to use the fiber as it was coax, doing some kind of FDM (frequency division multiplexing) with the lambdas (somehow the same). This would give us the capability to move at leat n x 10mbps ethernet on the same fiber using diferent lambdas for each customer, until power budget goes down. If the idea is correct, this would mean "next jump" on bandwidth. Who would be making this "ethernet/lambda multiplexors" right now? Is it feasible to do it today? or should we wait a little more? Most up to date packet size distribution info

Hi, I was wondering what the best sources for up to date info on current packet size distribution on the Internet might be? i.e. X% of Internet packets are of size Y bytes to Z bytes. I remember seeing this 2+ years ago but that was many disk failures/backup fiascos ago... Thanks! -Rob
