Which seems a bit assanine to me, since the ISP I worked for in 1993 offered custoemrs www.customer.ccnet.com. As much as I dislike Verisign, this is silly. I think I'll file a patent on organic O2/CO2 exchangers, and then sue everyone who breathes.... ARIN to allocate from 70.0.0.0/8

Hello- ARIN received the IPv4 address block 70.0.0.0/8 from the IANA on Jan. 15, 2004. In the near future, ARIN will begin making allocations from this new block. This will include allocations of /20 and shorter prefixes, according to ARIN's minimum allocation policy. You may wish to adjust any filters you have in place accordingly. Uunet/MCI communities

Hi all. Can A Uunet/Mci person please unicast me a copy of the communities you can send? I need to do some traffic shifting and I'd like to as-prepend all mci peer routes while leaving the mci customer routes unscathed. /24s run amuck

Ok, I realized I haven't done one of these since 2001, so it's time for an updated list of /24 polluters. With /24s accounting for over 50% (more than 71k) of the announcements on the Internet, it seems reasonable to try and take a look at why there are so many. One of the patterns which quickly becomes evident is the announcing of "almost all" of a larger block, but with enough gaps that traditional scripts which look for CIDR aggregation can miss it. For example, someone who owns a /16 and announces it as 250 /24s might not show up in other CIDR aggregation scripts because of the missing 5 /24s, or if 1 of the /24s has a different AS Path. So, solely for the purpose of looking for this pattern, I have written a script which counts the number of /24s announced within a /16 (an admittedly arbitrary range, but one which happens to work) with a consistant AS Path, and sorts by the highest count. This of course doesn't mean for certain that the netblock listed doesn't have a good reason for their deaggregation, but odds are they don't or could otherwise take steps to limit announcement to the general internet (for example a cable modem provider with 250 individual routes /24s but only a single upstream provider, who could announce a /16 globally and use no-export on the more specifics). This is done from the point of view of a Global Crossing (AS3549) transit feed, so things may look slightly different fromy our corner of the Internet. You have been warned. : It seemed that zebra was not following the RFC for OSPF. This would be one advantage to Quagga over Zebra. It is my understanding there have been many changes in Quagga to OSPF to make it standards compliant. The main issues I have with zebra are: 1. The need to install an OS on the host. 2. The need to harden it. 3. The possible hard disk failure (having *nix on ATA flash is no better given the actual limits in the number of times one can write to flash). There are things that I don't like with Cisco, but one thing I do like is that it boots from flash and it takes no time to install an image, remove the pcmcia card from the router, and boot different images from the flash with the flip of a config command. The concept of appliance (vs. computer) comes to mind. That being said, How does zebra deal with QOS/priority/custom/queuing/LLQ? With CAR? With IDS? With route redistribution to/from OSPF or ISIS? With multichassis multilink PPP? With spanning tree on multiple VLANs? With peer groups? With SNMP? How does the host deal with 802.1q trunks? With Channel interfaces? With hot-swapping a line card? With TCP MD5? These are the questions I ask myself when I pick a routing platform. Cheap is of no use to me if it does not do what I need. Michel.
