Nominations for Program Committee Membership

The NANOG Steering and Program Committees are soliciting nominations for eight positions on the Program Committee, with two-year terms starting after the October 2005 meeting. According to the charter[1]: "The Steering Committee will select the Program Committee with at least half of the members being chosen from among those current members willing to continue service, in order to provide continuity and preserve institutional memory of the programming process." Therefore, eight Program Committee slots will be filled by candidates from this pool of volunteers and current PC members. (The remaining eight slots have terms ending at the Fall, 2006 meeting.) ** Procedure ** To nominate yourself or someone else, please send mail to nominate(a)nanogpc.org with the following, no later than Friday, September 23: - Your name - Nominee's name (if not you) - Nominee's email address - Nominee's phone number - Reasons why you believe the nominee is qualified to serve on the Program Committee. A committee member will contact each of the nominees to verify interest and possibly request additional information. The list of confirmed nominees will be posted on September 26. Public comments will be invited and accepted for one week. The Steering Committee, in conjunction with the current Program Committee, will then select the eight people to fill these positions. The results will be announced on Monday, October 10. ** Eligibility ** The charter states: "To be eligible to be appointed as a member of the Program Committee, an individual must have attended one NANOG meeting within the prior calendar year (12 months). " ** Duties ** Again quoting the charter: "The Program Committee is responsible for motivating/soliciting people to submit interesting talks, selecting the submissions which seem most appropriate (with some attention to presentation skills), and following up with speakers after acceptances to ensure that presentations are completed in time, with ample warning of potential problems with the presentation." "Each member of the Program Committee must review all presentations submitted for each meeting. The Chair may excuse a member from one meeting's review cycle due to extenuating circumstances, but if a member misses two meetings in a row, he or she may be removed from the committee." ** Length of term ** These positions are for two years, beginning after the Fall 2005 meeting, and ending with the Fall 2007 meeting. One source of concern is the ability of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation to launch a planned nationwide fundraising campaign while tens of thousands of Americans are suddenly dispossessed. Through Web-site solicitations and corporate donations, the foundation has been aiming to raise $500 million through a campaign to be launched this week. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a news conference at Ground Zero Tuesday, as well as other officials speaking privately, said the effort will continue. But all acknowledged the competing concerns. "They certainly have a long ways to go, and yes ... there are always conflicting demands on the private sector to come up with a lot of moneys for a lot of worthy things," he said. "This is one of those worthy things, and I hope people will consider it." "We're confident that over the long term, people from across the nation will also help us to build the memorial," said Lynn Rasic, foundation spokeswoman. Bloomberg and others were more upbeat about big capital improvements already planned for lower Manhattan. One question mark continues to be the $2-billion rail project to Kennedy Airport in Queens. "I think with federal moneys you never have it until you cash the check," he said. "But I think the commitment is there, and I'm confident we'll be able to go ahead and do that." The rail link and the PATH train connection to New Jersey -- for which groundbreaking was held yesterday -- are funded through separate federal financing streams, he noted. Bloomberg said he's "reasonably confident" that both projects will proceed. The impact of Hurricane Katrina kept one prominent speaker after another at Tuesday's PATH groundbreaking referring to the devastation along the Gulf of Mexico. Sen. Hillary Clinton spoke in some detail of the devastation there and recalled how "America rallied to our side" in New York. Sen. This story was sent to you by: Fergie (Paul Ferguson) -------------------- Some school districts face new math this year -------------------- Amid the usual excitement for kids is the reality of cuts in sports and buses from budget defeats BY JOHN HILDEBRAND STAFF WRITER September 7, 2005 While yellow buses rolled once again, hundreds of Long Island students and their parents still scrambled to cope with reductions in bus schedules and other school services resulting from last spring's record budget defeats. Most classes start this week -- an annual rite marked with the excitement of reuniting with classmates and exploring remodeled schools. But mixed with excitement is a sense of loss in many of the 21 districts operating under so-called austerity budgets. In Smithtown, students yesterday spent their first day at the district's reopened High School East in St. James -- a sprawling white-brick building complete with its own radio broadcast center and four computerized writing labs. Along with amenities there, students face cuts in services -- for example, elimination of late buses used in the past to take teens home after afternoon sports practices and club meetings. "We'll miss the late buses," said Liz Shea, president of the high school's newly organized Parent Teacher Student Association. Like many parents, she has helped organize a carpool to get her 11th-grade daughter home after soccer practices. On the other hand, Shea thinks most parents like the fact that the district now has a second high school -- a chance, perhaps, for students to get to know classmates and teachers better. The building opened as a high school in 1953, but had operated since 1989 as a middle school. In Port Washington, another district coping with budget cuts, some families threatened with losses of bus transportation got some relief yesterday. The district announced it would restore after-school busing to local child-care centers that it had earlier planned to trim. "Oh, that's fantastic!" said Deborah Ratner, a social worker, who had feared she wouldn't be able to find rides to a child-care center for her 8-year-old son on days she is scheduled to work. "It'll take a lot of pressure off my work day." Seventh- and eighth-grade sports teams have been reduced in number or eliminated in several districts, including Mineola, Seaford and Plainedge. In the latter district, parents have raised enough money in donations to save fall and winter sports on the varsity and junior-varsity levels, and are trying to rescue spring sports as well. "We're still plugging along," said Theresa Schaeffer, the mother of a Plainedge football quarterback and spokeswoman for a parent fundraising group. Schaeffer, who teaches in New York City, voiced regret over other cut programs that parents have not been able to salvage -- for example, her daughter's high-school Spanish club. Still, school routines go on. Inside Plainedge Middle School, students yesterday struggled with locker combinations and finding classes. Twelve-year-old Brittany Giordina shrugged when asked if budget cuts had affected how students felt about returning to school. "Not really," she said. "Nothing really has been taken from us education-wise." Elsewhere, the mood was often upbeat. In Westhampton Beach, families welcomed a district decision to distribute laptop computers to every sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grader. And in Roosevelt, state Education Commissioner Richard Mills visited the only school district run by the state to help mark the rebuilding of an elementary school there. The remodeled Centennial School opens to students tomorrow -- the first stage of a $200-million project aimed at eventually rebuilding or replacing every school in the district. "The music room, the computer sets, the bathrooms -- everything is right there and it looks wonderful," Mills said after touring the school. The commissioner also told an audience of about 200 teachers and others that the rebuilt school was the best evidence yet that Roosevelt was on the rise. In Westhampton Beach, 12-year-old Danielle Parry yesterday was looking forward to picking up her laptop. Last year, she was in a pilot program that leased a laptop for every sixth-grader. "I really liked math last year," she said. "We use a sketch pad. You don't have to use a compass to make circles. It's quicker, and we learn more." The experiment is costing the Westhampton Beach school district $375,000 to lease the laptops and required hardware and software for about 430 students and their teachers, who can access the Internet anywhere in the middle school. The goal isn't to increase computer literacy, according to Superintendent Lynn Schwartz. It's to open the door to a whole new way of teaching. Every classroom has a projector and whiteboard -- on which PowerPoint data are displayed electronically -- and all of the sixth-graders were doing PowerPoint presentations after a few weeks last year. "This is the 21st century classroom, right here," Schwartz said. The superintendent estimated 95 percent of the students in his school have home computers, but that does not mean the students can use them when they need to. "The laptop is easier," said Jesse Schulz, 12, who like Parry is starting seventh grade. "My computer at home is a desktop, and I have three brothers. A lot of the time, one of them is on it." Amid the excitement and confusion of the first days of school, some Island youngsters still had time to think of others. At Lawrence Road Middle School in Uniondale, Principal Valerie Henning-Piedmonte and her students raised $650 during lunch periods to donate to Gulf Coast hurricane victims. An eighth-grader, Aleisha Darrell, 13, said she and classmates came up with the idea of relief aid during a social studies class. Said Darrell, "Some gave $5, some gave $20, because they know they've got it good, and the people down there really need some help." DARPA and the network

Since the modern military runs on networks, DARPA funds various programs to make networks better and more secure. One of these was CHATS. Here is the business case taken from the DARPA budget justification: ------ The Composable High Assurance Trusted Systems (CHATS) program is developing the tools and technology that enable the core network services to be protected from the introduction and execution of malicious code or other attack techniques and methods. These tools and technologies will provide the security services needed to achieve comprehensive-secure, highly distributed, mission-critical information systems for the DoD. A unique feature of CHATS is that these system capabilities will be developed by engaging the open-source community in security functionality for existing open-source operating systems. Additionally, DARPA will engage the open-source community in a consortium-based approach to create a ?neutral?, secure operating system architecture framework. This security architecture framework will then be used to develop techniques for composing OS capabilities to support both servers and clients in the increasing network-centric communications fabric of the DoD. In FY 2003 the CHATS program will move to project ST-24 in this program element. ------ For a time, DARPA even funded the ongoing work of the OpenBSD team but political disagreements over the Iraq war scuttled that work. In roughly the same time frame, there was a project called LSAP (Linux Security Audit Project) that attenmpted to extend the methodology of OpenBSD to Linux. This was succeeded by Sardonix which attempted to create a register of all audited open source software. For various reasons both of these projects fizzled. So why did OpenBSD succeed in their rigorous audit process? I believe it is because there was a firm hand at the helm who was able to keep them focused on their non-profit goal, namely secure operating software. Now corporations do share one characteristic with OpenBSD which should allow them to be able to succeed in the same way. They have firm hands at the helm. However, they also have the profit motive and it is often possible for corporations to avoid security issues in their systems and make profits anyway. That's where NANOG comes in. We are the customers of the router and switch manufacturers. We have the ability to tie the corporate profit motive together with a security imperative. I know that people on this list would rather talk about how to tweak the boxes and protocols to do the best with what we have available, but I think times have changed. The global community of hackers is our Al Qaeda, a leaderless mob that wants to break the network and control the network. If we want to prevent this, then we have to work as hard and as smart as the many people who are tackling Islamist terrorist cells. It's no longer good enough to just do the best we can with the boxes that vendors give us when those boxes are so easily compromised and when there is a community of people who are specifically targetting those boxes, unlike in the past. --Michael Dillon

I'm about to be removed, forcibly, from nanog-post. Mostly, it's because I feel that the degree of stink raised by the admin team over my "send in the marines" post last week is completely out of the bounds of reason for a single, only arguably off-topic, posting which asked for, and received, no on-list replies. And, clearly, they *don't* think it's unreasonable. That's ok; I only operate very small networks, and no one's going to lose any sleep over not hearing what I have to say. And since, notwithstanding everyone's interest in *reading* best practices information on networking, none of the people who *have* it had anything to write about it on the Wikicty below (with a couple of notable exceptions), I'm probably taking that off in another direction as well.
