Hello, I was looking for some opinions on Cisco vs. Foundry (specifically Cisco's NPE-G1 vs a NetIron 4802). The application is mainly content delivery - outbound heavy traffic with an emphasis on quality of delivery. Basically I'm looking at the 4802 because we're able to provision GigE for all the providers, so we don't really need an architecture that can support OC-type interfaces. The size is also attractive for some of our smaller PoPs. I'm also intereted in failover/hot-standby capabilities on the Foundry as we have had much experience with them. Best, Lance

Opinions on transit

If anyone with a web hosting provider's perspective, or even just an end user's perspective, could send me off-list opinions on AT&T, MCI, XO, NTT and Sprint I'd appreciate it. Direct experience would be best, don't really want hearsay. I'm particularly interested in how the various companies NOC's respond to less run of the mill problems such as issues with other customers of theirs having problems that affect you, BGP communities and traffic engineering questions/answers and then just plain performance, etc. We've recently experienced problems where us and a mutual customer of one of our transit providers couldn't talk to each other due to a failing link on the other customer's side. That remote company is multi-homed so I just needed to make them not prefer our common transit to get to us side. The transit provider does not allow me to prepend just to that remote AS, accolades to providers that do offer this, so our only option to resolve the problem was to turn our link to this transit off, leave our customers behind the remote ISP unable to get to us, or get the transit provider to help. Well, provider was useless and told me to call their German NOC since the country where the problem was is handled through there. So, we're going to replace them with one of the above and I want some real world feedback to go along with the providers' versions of how they perform and respond to support requests. Thanks, David

It's worth noting that C's don't need actual IP address space assigned to the router-id for OSPF. It's just an arbitrary value; it's probably better karma to set it to whatever you want (maybe something that doesn't look like an IP address). RFC 2328: Router ID A 32-bit number assigned to each router running the OSPF protocol. This number uniquely identifies the router within an Autonomous System. CCO: <http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1839/products_command_ref…> Usage Guidelines You can configure an arbitrary value in the IP address format for each router. However, each router ID must be unique. If this command is used on an OSPF router process which is already active (has neighbors), the new router-ID is used at the next reload or at a manual OSPF process restart. To manually restart the OSPF process, use the clear ip ospf command.

Hi, this may be a OOO..LD topic which is talked, discussed or agrued for year. ISP networks may need to be optimized continuously. But, it seems people have different view of optimization when they use this word at different place; sometimes optimization means adding more access router, add more link bandwidth or add more servers; while it could be used to point the requirement on removing subareas in OSPF or simplify network structure. Is there a common sense on the target of network optimization? or is there common startup line of such work? What should be the model of a optimized ISP network ( or PoP site) ?
