Thanks for highlighting the mis-placements of some of the cables. Offices in NY City serve as the International Transmission Maintenance Centers and Gateway Offices of multiple carriers, if those latter designations are still relevant today. There are some other generalizations made on the map, as well, but I think the general concept of their being, along with their general utility in the universe, comes across just the same. A listing of cable ships around the world and their approximate locations (as of a couple of months ago) is available from the Submarine Telecoms Forum, at http://www.subtelforum.com/ and click on "Issue 29". There just aren't that many ships in the area, or any area, for that matter. Much of the affected cables are managed under the SEAIOCMA (South East Asia Indian Ocean Cable Maintenance Agreement). I am not sure how many ships they have on stand-by in the region, but probably not enough to send out one ship to each of the faults, given that multiple faults have been reported on most cable systems. I presume, the more important cable systems - those with higher stakes for the SEAIOCMA signatories will get repaired first followed by others. thanks

Hi, as a comsequence of a virus diffused in my customer-base, I often receive big bursts of traffic on my DNS servers. Unluckly, a lot of clients start to bomb my DNSs at a certain hour, so I have a distributed tentative of denial of service. I can't blacklist them on my DNSs, because the infected clients are too much. For this reason, I would like that a DNS could response maximum to 10 queries per second given by every single Ip address. Anybody knows a solution, just using iptables/netfilter/kernel tuning/BIND tuning, without using any hardware traffic shaper? Thanks Best Regards Luke

I recently purchased a Slingbox Pro, and have set it up so that I can remotely access/control my home HDTV DVR and stream video remotely. My broadband access SP specifically allow home users to run servers, as long as said servers don't cause a problem for the SP infrastructure nor for other users or doing anything illegal; as long as I'm not breaking the law or making problems for others, they don't care. The Slingbox is pretty cool; when I access it, both the video and audio quality are more than acceptable. It even works well when I access it via EVDO; on average, I'm pulling down about 450kb/sec up to about 580kb/sec over TCP (my home upstream link is a theoretical 768kb/sec, minus overhead; I generally get something pretty close to that). What I'm wondering is, do broadband SPs believe that this kind of system will become common enough to make a signficant difference in traffic paterns, and if so, how do they believe it will affect their access infrastructures in terms of capacity, given the typical asymmetries seen in upstream vs. downstream capacity in many broadband access networks? If a user isn't doing something like breaking the law by illegally redistributing copyrighted content, is this sort of activity permitted by your AUPs? If so, would you change your AUPs if you saw a significant shift towards non- infringing upstream content streaming by your broadband access customers? If not, would you consider changing your AUPs in order to allow this sort of upstream content streaming of non-infringing content, with the caveat that users can't caused problems for your infrastructure or for other users, and perhaps with a bandwidth cap? Would you police down this traffic if you could readily classify it, as many SPs do with P2P applications? Would the fact that this type of traffic doesn't appear to be illegal or infringing in any way lead you to treat it differently than P2P traffic (even though there are many legitimate uses for P2P file-sharing systems, the presumption always seems to be that the majority of P2P traffic is in illegally- redistributed copyrighted content, and thus P2P technologies seem to've acquired a taint of distaste from many quarters, rightly or wrongly). Also, have you considered running a service like this yourselves, a la VoIP/IPTV? Vidoeconferencing is somewhat analogous, but in most cases, videoconference calls (things like iChat, Skype videoconferencing, etc.) generally seem to use a less bandwidth than the Slingox, and it seems to me that they will in most cases be of shorter duration than, say, a business traveler who wants to keep up with Lost or 24 and so sits down to stream video from his home A/V system for 45 minutes to an hour at a stretch. Sorry to ramble, this neat little toy just sparked a few questions, and I figured that some of you are dealing with these kinds of issues already, or are anticipating doing so in the not-so-distant future. With the now widely deployed win* platform #tcp stach respecting tcp-reno things work according to well #understood/accepted models. Mac OSX, linux and Vista seem to NOT respect #tcp-reno, and may change the models somewhat... Will this cause more #spikiness on individual links? will this change in behaviour on a wide #scale (vista rollout to new computers or to existing platforms) causing #folks capacity planning models to fail? Capacity planning is a very important issue, but for other folks capacity *under*utilization is the flip side of that issue. For example, there are still scientific researchers who continue to be puzzled by low throughput for bulk data transfers, even with clean fast ethernet (or gig ethernet!) connections end-to-end. For example, looking at table 1 of http://netflow.internet2.edu/weekly/20061218/ we can see that on I2 95% of all bulk TCP data transfers are ~25Mbps or less -- however the top 1/10th of 1% successfully demonstrate 1Gbps throughput. The question then becomes one of "How do we help bridge that 'wizard gap' or transfer that expertise (of those who are demonstrably able to fully utilize the connections at their disposal) to all the other well-connected researchers out there?" Things like Web100, see http://www.web100.org/download/ are intended to help automate this for Linux users, although clearly there are still issues with applications (if you're curious, you can see the sort of improvements to SSH that were made by the folks at PSC at: http://www.psc.edu/networking/projects/hpn-ssh/ and there's a lot of fascinating empirical work that's been done with applications such as GridFTP (where encryption is not the bottleneck). So what about Vista? Well, it has (or should have, I'll withold any final assertions until I see what actually finally gets shipped to consumers) a number of TCP performance enhancements which are described at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg1105.mspx (last updated September 22nd, 2006). If the network traffic load feels different post-Vista, well, it very well may *be* different. :-) But that's all host-based -- what about at the network level? I'm intrigued to see things like jumbo frames accounting for a non-negligible fraction of traffic on Internet2 (e.g., roughly 7% or so of octets, see http://netflow.internet2.edu/weekly/longit/perc-b-jumbo-packets.png ), and I also notice that at least one alternative TCP/IP implementation has elected to commercialize in the form of a 1U gateway appliance that does its mojo network wide, rather than working to retrofit individual hosts with high performance TCP stacks on a host-by-host basis. I think those sort of things have tremendous potential to change the aggregate network behavior we all see over time.
