if you have a bsd, linux , or probably cygwin machine, would you please run the attached script once as a favor to a research project? it simply does a traceroute to a eight targets in four locations around the net to see if they are reachable from your site, and, if not, where the route dies. this is a small part of a larger experiment, so try not to jump to too many conclusions :). if things are as we suspect, we'll try to present the analysis in toronto. thank you! randy

2006 IPv4 Address Use Report

2006 was another busy year for the five Regional Internet Registries: together, they gave out 161.48 million IPv4 addresses, just shy of the 165.45 million given out in 2005 as measured on january first 2006. The current (jan 1st, 2007) figure for 2005 is 175.52 million addresses. Together with adjustments for earlier years, this brings the total addresses available to almost exactly 1.3 billion, down from 1468.61 million a year ago. This is out of 3706.65 million usable IPv4 addresses, so 2407.11 million addresses are currently given out to either end-users or Internet Service Providers. When a block of address space is given back by the holder, it's removed from the list. This is the reason why the numbers for earlier years keep going down. The 10 million extra addresses in 2005 and 4 million in 2001 are the responsibility of ARIN, which went from 36.30 million addresses for 2005 in their 2006-01-01 records to 47.56 in their 2007-01-01 records. The reason for the retroactive growth is unknown. AfriNIC gives out address space in Africa, APNIC in the Asia-Pacific region, ARIN in North America, LACNIC in Latin American and the Caribbean and the RIPE NCC in Europe, the former Soviet Union and the Middle East. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA, part of ICANN) keeps an overview of the IPv4 address space at http://www.iana.org/ assignments/ipv4-address-space. The list consists of 256 blocks of 16.78 million addresses. Along with the 922.74 million addresses still available in the IANA global pool this makes the total number of available addresses 1300.65 million, down 167.96 million from a year earlier. The size of address blocks given has been increasing steadily. The table below shows the number of requests for a certain range of block sizes (equal or higher than the first, lower than the second value). When the 2M+ blocks are taken out of the equation, 2005 had a total of 96.83 million addresses (2006-01-01) and 2006 119.06 million given out. Question: Why is it that every company out there allows connections through their firewalls to their web and mail infrastructure from countries that they don't even do business in. Shouldn't it be our default to only allow US based IP addresses and then allow others as needed? The only case I can think of would be traveling folks that need to VPN or something, which could be permitted in the Firewall, but WHY WIDE OPEN ACCESS? There are significant cable landing sites at Pacific City and at Nedonna Beach near Rockaway, Oregon, not far from here in Portland. They connect variously to Japan, Hawaii (and Australia), Alaska and California. Quite a bit about these cable terminuses can be found at the Oregon Fishermen's Cable Committee web site. www.ofcc.com/cable_locations.htm The OFCC worked closely from the mid-1990s onward with at least three cable operators, Tyco, Alaska Northstar and Southern Cross (which has the main US-Australia loops). They have a special agreement that basically amounts to a collaborative approach to actual or potential cable snags by trawlers. The background makes for interesting reading. "The Oregon Fishermen's Undersea Cable Committee Agreement (Oregon Fishermen's Agreement) is the first effort by two industries to discuss, describe and delineate their shared use of a community resource -- the ocean . . . Just so we're clear, while I was passing along information provided by a third party I wasn't suggesting whether obfuscating, or attempting to hide, or make public, location information posed a problem or had any merit one way or the other. You've presented somewhat of a Gordian knot here, it would appear. Consider, while it's extremely difficult for a customer to obtain information concerning his or her own overland fiber routes without the signing away of their first born, here we have, ironically, a situation where underwater cables of far greater import are clearly marked on charts and made freely available through software under the international treaty terms. Very interesting, but as you suggest, a condition that's existed for a very long time. Where continental shelves come into play, this problem has been partially mitigated since 1970, when TAT-5 between R.I. and Spain was implemented using the first "sea plow" to bury the cable several feet down off Rhode Island. That having been said, not all shorelines sit on top of continental shelves, and even where trenching is used on a shelf, it, too, poses its own perils during repairs, when dangling cable ends are lost in a mire of mud clouds that take hours to settle after divers use water pressure to find them while kicking up sediment on the seabed. In other situations some operators resort to using radio communications and sometimes small craft to ward off ships from cabling lanes. Years ago piper cubs were used to buzz encroaching ships and drop tons of leaflets on them warning them to stay away. Today they'd probably get shot down. Right about here I'd expect a visit from Sean Gorman, who has had his own share of grief to deal with in this respect while plotting the nation's overland fiber routes.
