Could someone from Spectrum who deals with the HFC infrastructure in Southern California, specifically the legacy Time Warner Cable area, contact me off list ? Apparently the local infrastructure crew thinks it's OK to leave cable running between two cans in a residential neighborhood since at least July 2022. But it's OK, because they've cautioned them off with orange cones, right ? Multiple calls to regular customer service fall on deaf ears about a coax trunk cable run above ground on a street and sidewalk in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Customer service says, "We don't know what you're talking about, we don't have cables running on the street". Can't seem to get a hold of the right people to come out and get it buried and get rid of the eyesore and safety hazard ... [image: image1.jpg] [image: image2.jpg] Thanks, Gabe

The cost is not low. Trust me on that. I've been involved in a pretty massive suburban fibre deployment for the past decade... I expect we'll make money sometime in the 2030's... in time for me to retire. We have the same issue here in suburban Atlanta but with Comcast. The Comcast ped in my front yard has no cover... it's exposed to the elements. There's a bright orange cable running from there to my neighbor's house, it's been there for at least 3 years. At the least, it doesn't touch my property. There's other spots in my neighborhood where Comcast's bright orange coax just runs on the ground, along the road, in the gutter. Not saying AT&T is the greatest but at the very least their peds(they are so old they still say Bellsouth) have covers and they come within 3 days of install to bury DSL lines. I don't understand why Comcast has to choose the absolute ugliest bright orange cables to leave everywhere. If you're going to leave it, at least use a black cable. Smaller than a /24 for BGP?

Have there been talks about the best practices to accept things smaller than a /24? I qm seeing more and more scenarios where folks need to participate in BGP but they do not need a full /24 of space. Seems wasteful. I know this would bloat the routing table immensely. I know of several folks who could split their /24 into /25s across a few regions and still have plenty of IP space. Increasing problems with geolocation/IPv4 access

I’ve been seeing an increasing problem with IP space not having the ability to be used due to the behaviors of either geolocation or worse, people blocking IP space after it’s been in-use for a period of time. Before I go back to someone at ARIN and say “your shiny unused 4.10 IP space” is non-functional and am at a place where I need to start/restart/respawn the timer, I have a few questions for people: 1) Do you see 23.138.114.0/24 in any feeds from a security provider that say it can/should be blocked? If so, I’d love to hear from you to track this down. Over the new year we had some local schools start to block this IP space. 2) many companies have geolocation feeds and services that exist and pull in data. The reputable people are easy to find, there are those that are problematic from time-to-time (I had a few customers leave Sling due to the issues with that service). 3) Have you had similar issues? How are you chasing all the issues? We’ve seen things from everything works except uploading check images to banks, to other financial service companies block the space our customers are in. If we move them to another range this solves the problem. 4) We do IPv6, these places aren’t IPv6 modern at all, so that’s no help. 5) IRR+geofeed are published of course. I’m thinking that it might be worthwhile that IP space have published placeholders when it’s well understood, eg: ARIN 4.9 space, I can predict what our next allocation would be, it would be great to have it be pre-warmed. I’ve only seen a few complaints against all our IP space over time, so I don’t think there’s anything malicious coming from the IP space to justify it, but it’s also possible they didn’t make it through. If you’re with the FKA Savvis side, can you also ping me, I’d like to see if you can reach out to our most recent complaint source to see if we can find who is publishing this. Same if you’re with Merit or the Michigan Statewide Educational Network - your teachers stopped being able to post to powerschool for their students over the new year break. They’ve fed it up to their tech people towards the ISD. Details available off-list. Any insights are welcome, and as I said, I’d like to understand where the source list is as it starts out working then gradually breaks, so someone is publishing things and they are going out further. - Jared

Typical last mile battery runtime (protecting against power cuts)

Hi folks, At $day_job, I have a team of engineers who are oncall for critical services in the United Kingdom. For $reasons, the national power grid is announcing the possibility of rolling power cuts over the coming months. Right now it's "unlikely", but possible. If cuts do happen, it'll be 3+ hours, possibly several times/day. I'm looking at the cost/benefit of deploying small UPSes at people's homes, to protect their network access when oncall. Just to power the home router (+ONT if FTTP), and keep a charged laptop. I figure anything smallish should be enough for a few hours. Question is, how much battery runtime can I typically expect from ISPs' last mile infra. People will have a random mix of DSL, FTTP, DOCSIS. Another alternative is tethering with 4G. - For FTTP, I *think* (but am not sure) that the UK mostly uses PON, so guess it would be runtime of OLT and onwards - For DSL: runtime of DSLAM cabinet and onwards - For CATV: CMTS and onwards, maybe any active equipments in the HFC to the CPE? - For 4G: BSS and onwards Could anyone with last mile experience help with some ballpark figures? I.e. 15 min vs 8h or 8 days. Thank you, Israel

Hello NANOG – longtime lurker, first time poster. I am requesting some assistance today with stopping a pervasive malware campaign being sent via email from multiple open proxies in the following IP blocks: 45.137.20.0 - 45.137.23.255 185.222.56.0 - 185.222.59.255 This IP space is assigned to rootlayer.net in Amsterdam. - AS51447 % Abuse contact for 'AS51447' is 'complain(a)rootlayer.net' All email has contained some sort of malicious code: ransomware, trojans, info sealers, and other various malware (some known and some brand new/not detected yet). The email content is spoofing various legitimate companies and banks. Since the beginning of the year when I became involved in a particular customer (elderly owner of a small business), we have been sending at least 5 complaints a day (one for each email) to complain(a)rootlayer.net, all reporting has been ignored. The most recent spoof & malware email was received at 16:33 PM PST 5 Feb 2023. Frankly, we have grown tired of filing abuse complaints into the black hole while an elderly gentleman is being targeted. I am not sure a contact at Rootlayer will be helpful at this point, but if someone has a contact it would be appreciated. More importantly, anyone have a contact at their upstream providers that may be able to beat down these criminal activities and Rootlayer? AS49981 - WorldStream B.V. AS49453 - Global Layer B.V. He was apparently based in cambridge, but his site is down. Recently I stumbled across a series of articles by him that were lovingly illustrative, incredibly clearly well written, and appeared to use a C library that I don't have, covering a ton of fundamental algorithms that I would like to have in my toolkit, still, in C, because that is how I still think. I first found him whilst I was looking for a binpacking algorithm(s) and benchmarks for how well they performed on modern hardware. Any contacts available that are responsible for androidpolice.com website hosting? Some of our IP space is not able to access their website. Other IP addresses of ours are working just fine. This appears to be some kind HTTP protocol layer issue but only affecting certain IP addresses. I am guessing it is some kind of web application firewall using outdated IP list data. Yes I know it is hosted at Amazon but every time I have tried to go through Amazon for support with websites they are hosting, they have 100% of the time told me they can't and/or won't help me with website hosting issues on their web platform; I have to go through their customer... which I don't have any good contact info for. I've tried reaching them on twitter, I've tried blindly emailing people listed on their website guessing their email addresses, etc. I have had zero response. Thanks! Justin
