change in roles on the program committee

today, at our lunchtime meeting, the nanog program committee selected a new chair, david meyer of cisco and university of oregon, and a new vice-chair, tom daly of dynamic network services. please join me in cogratulating them in person if you're here at nanog. for the past two years, ren provo has served as vice-chair of the program committee, a role that was basically created specifically for her. she has been critical in the development of the program committee into the open, active, and even somewhat-organized group that it is today. i'm proud to have worked with her on this project for the past two years and am extremely grateful for everything she has done. ren and i decided to resign our positions prior to the october meeting to ensure a smooth transition. we will both continue to serve as members of the program committee through the end of our current terms in october. NANOG has been getting better and better for the last several years. we're announcing locations much earlier and we're continuing to develop and experiment with the content to make it more relevant and more interesting for attendees. credit for these efforts certainly go to members of the steering and mailing list committees and to merit staff, but they also go to the program committee. the nanog program committee is full of some of the smartest, best people that i've ever worked with. it's a pleasure to be associated with them. eight (8) of the slots on the program committee will be opening up this october. if you'd like to work with other interesting people to make the nanog conference better, please consider submitting your name to be considered for one of these slots. the steering committee will announce details, or you can come see almost any member of the PC for more information. again, congratulations to dave and tom. cheers, todd underwood, outgoing chair for the program committee spots opening up in october

Hi folks, Just a few reminders - The registration fee for NANOG46 is set to go up from US$525 to US$600 on Monday. https://nanog.merit.edu/registration/ The general program is full at this time. Lightning talks are being accepted at http://pc.nanog.org. Three lightning talks will be selected next Tuesday for presentation on Monday the 15th of June. http://nanog46.comcast.net offers suggestions for site-seeing, food and transport. Some have asked what is the best way to get to the Loews Hotel from the Philadelphia Airport. Without a doubt the train is the best bang for your $7. Follow the signs when baggage claim, ground transportation and exit are mentioned. You can purchase the ticket on the train. Market East is the exit and the hotel is across the street from the Hard Rock at the corner of 12th & Market. See you in about a week! -ren

Hi Folks: One Last set of meeting reminders!! If you have not yet made your hotel reservations, you might want to consider doing so as the NANOG hotel room rate ends on Friday, May 29. Make sure to complete your NANOG registration soon, you do not want to miss out on an excellent program and opportunity to catch up in person with members of the NANOG community. On Monday, June 8 the registration late fee goes into effect. Lastly, do not forget to get those lighting talk ideas submitted! Look forward to seeing everyone in sunny Philly. Greetings! There are just four weeks left until NANOG46, and if you are planning to attend don't delay - register! While the Early-bird registration period has ended, if you don't register before June 8 you will face the on-site price of $600. Howdy, An updated agenda for NANOG46 has been posted at: http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog46/agenda.php you might notice that this NANOG features: * Keynote by Paul Vixie on "Internet Superbugs and the Art of War" * A ton of useful tutorials including Dani Roisman's popular "BGP Load Balancing", and new tutorials from Richard Steenbergen, "Production v6 Network in 30 minutes or less" and Martin Hannigan "Network Capacity RFP" * The popular Peering and Security tracks * New v6 operational content and experience * Lots of other great, operational presentations So I would humbly suggest that you (collectively) register for NANOG46 ( https://nanog.merit.edu/registration/ ) as quickly as possible. Discounted registration ends in less than two weeks (on May 10) so save yourself $75 and get registered. You know you're going to go, so just go already. If you require an invitation or travel letter for visa purposes, please send mail to nanog-support(a)nanog.org. I would *strongly* suggest you reserve a hotel room if you have not already. The last several NANOGs all available discounted rooms in the room block have gone very quickly. ( http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog46/hotel.php ) Note that the program is now almost completely full (there are 2-3 slots left that are saved for conditionally accepted talks that are already in progress or any presentations dealing with late-breaking events, but the event would have to be exceptionally significant and interesting). Lightning talks are short (10 minute maximum) presentations submitted immediately prior to or during the conference. Lightning talks are particularly appropriate for material that is too short to fill a normal Plenary presentation slot or too timely to have been submitted with sufficient anticipation. Lightning talks are also an opportunity for presenters to get early feedback on a new or still-gestating idea. The first round of Lightning talks will be selected on June 9 and will be announced immediately prior to the start of the conference. VERP now active on all NANOG mailing lists

Hi everyone All NANOG mailing lists were updated to use VERP (variable envelope return paths) at the beginning of the week. This will aid in bounce detection and help identify the subscriber. A more detailed description of VERP can be found here: http://wiki.list.org/display/DOC/So+what+is+this+VERP+stuff With this change some headers have changed. Depending on how you are performing your filtering this may or may not affect you. NANOG46 - abstracts, trains & hotels - oh my!

Hi folks, NANOG46 is only a few months away and I hear many are getting their ducks in a row to participate. We, the Program Committee, would like to remind all who have submitted abstracts at http://pc.nanog.org that the time has come to get your presentation materials uploaded. For those of you still considering submitting presentations it is not too late to request a BOF, tutorial, track, or general session slot. Lightning talk submissions will be welcomed in May. Shifting gears to represent the host, Comcast, I would encourage folks to consider exploring Philly either before or after NANOG46, which runs 14-17 June. http://nanog46.comcast.net includes links for sightseeing, socializing and general transportation guidance. This is a work in progress, yes it will be IPv6 ready shortly, and if folks have recommendations for inclusion please do email me directly. Amtrak is running a special until July (must purchase by 12-Jun-09) which can significantly reduce costs, a bonus in this economy. Go to http://www.amtrak.com and click on 'Hot Deals' for the lower fares on Acela Express. Washington, DC to Philly is only $73 and you get to keep your shoes on! Philly is a walking city and there is no need to rent a car. Whether you arrive by Amtrak or airplane consider using the SEPTA Rail trains to take you to the conference hotel. Market East would be the right stop to exit, also known as Convention Center. Follow the signs for the Hard Rock Cafe and you'll spot the Loews Hotel across the street. NANOG 46 Call for Presentations ============================== The North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) will hold its 46th meeting June 14-17, 2009 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. NANOG 46 will be hosted by Comcast. The NANOG Program Committee is now seeking proposals for Presentations, Panels, Tutorials, and Birds of a Feather sessions (BOFs) for the NANOG46 program. We invite presentations highlighting issues relating to technology already deployed or soon-to-be deployed in the Internet. Vendors are encouraged to work with operators to present real-world deployment experiences with the vendor's products and interoperability. NANOG 46 submissions are welcome at http://pc.nanog.org. Conditional acceptance notifications for NANOG 46 will be sent by 19 May 2009. Detail of the submission process, as well as NANOG 46 dates of interest are described below. About NANOG =========== NANOG is the premiere meeting for network operators in North America, and provides a forum for information exchange among network operators, engineers, and researchers. NANOG meets three times each year, and include panels, presentations, tutorial sessions, and BOFs. NANOG attendees include operators from networks of all sizes, enterprise operators, peering coordinators, transport and switching equipment vendors, and network researchers. NANOG attendees will share ideas and interact with leaders in the field of network operations, discuss current operational events and issues, and learn about state of the art operational techniques. Key Dates for NANOG46 ===================== Call for Presentations Opens: 02 March 2009 Please use http://pc.nanog.org Deadline for Speaker Submissions: 27 March 2009 Final Slides: 06 April 2009 Final Program Published: 17 April 2009 Lightning talk submissions open: 15 May 2009 Technical Conference ==================== The NANOG Program Committee seeks proposals for presentations, panels, tutorial sessions, and BOFs in all areas of network operations, including (but not limited to): - Power and facilities Topics may include power reliability and engineering, green power, power efficiency, cooling, and facilities management. - Interconnections Topics may include IXes, intra-building, MMR, metro-wide connections, peering, and transit purchasing tactics and strategies. - Security Topics may include routing security, route filtering of large peers/customers, and inter-as security and cooperation. - DNS Topics may include using DNS data for network metrics, botnet discovery, and geolocation. - IPv6 Topics may include real-world deployment challenges, Carrier Grade NAT, NAT-PT implementations that work and scale, and allocation strategies. - Content Topics may include Distribution (p2p, IPTV), content payment models, content distribution technologies and networks, and storage/archiving. - Disaster recovery Topics may include Risk analysis, training, agencies, planning methods, hardware portability, key tools, transport audits, and other lessons learned. In general, presentations are being sought by and for network operators of all sizes. Presentations about difficult problems (and interesting solutions) that you encounter in the course of your job are encouraged. If you think you have an interesting topic but want some feedback or assistance working it into a presentation, please email the Program Committee chair (chair(a)pc.nanog.org) and a representative on the Program Committee will give you the feedback needed to work it into a presentation. Talks ===== Plenary Session --------------- A plenary session talk should be on a topic of interest to the general NANOG audience, and may be up to 30 minutes long (including time for questions and answers.) Tracks ------ Tracks are 90-minute informal agenda blocks on topics which are of interest to a portion of the NANOG community. The 90-minute block can be subdivided into any number of combinations to suit the theme. A moderator generally coordinates content within the 90-minute block of time. A typical track session includes some presentations, but usually is focused on community discussion and interaction. Frequent track topics include: - Peering - ISP Security - Tools A track session is 90 minutes. Typically two tracks or three tracks will be run concurrently. Panels ------ Panel selection will be based on the importance, originality, focus and timeliness of the topic; expertise of proposed panelists; as well as the potential for informative and controversial discussion. The panel leader should provide an abstract describing the panel theme, list of panelists, and an outline of how the panel will be organized. After acceptance, the panel leader will be given the option to invite panel authors to submit their presentations to the NANOG Program Committee for review. Until then authors should not submit their individual presentations for the panel. A panel may be up to 90 minutes long. Lightning Talks --------------- A lightning talk is a very short presentation or speech by any attendee on any topic relevant to the NANOG audience. These are limited to ten minutes; this will be strictly enforced. If you have a topic that's timely, interesting, or even a crackpot idea you want to share, we encourage you to consider presenting it. Signups for lightning talks will be accepted during the NANOG meeting. Research Forum -------------- Researchers are invited to present short (10-minute) summaries of their work for operator feedback. Topics include routing, network performance, statistical measurement and analysis, and protocol development and implementation. Studies presented may be works in progress. Researchers from academia, government, and industry are encouraged to present. Tutorials --------- Proposals are also invited for tutorial sessions from the introductory through advanced level on all related topics, including: - Disaster Recovery Planning - Troubleshooting BGP - Best Practices for Determining Traffic Matrices - Options for Blackhole and Discard Routing - BGP/MPLS Layer 3 VPNs - Peering business and engineering basics BOFs ---- BOFs (Birds of a Feather sessions) are informal sessions on topics which are of interest to a portion of the NANOG community. BOFs may be held in the hallways, break-out areas or in an unscheduled tutorial room by request submitted to nanogpc(a)nanog.org at least 30 minutes in advance of desired use with estimated duration notes. A typical BOF session may include some structure or presentations, but usually is focused on community discussion and interaction. Frequent BOF topics include: - R&D collaboration - Hot-topics in the media - Peering - ISP Security - Tools The less structured nature of BOF sessions allows for the greatest flexibility from a timing perspective. Registration Fee Waivers ========================= The meeting registration fee will be waived as follows: - General session talk: one speaker - General session panel: one moderator and all panelists - Research forum talk: one speaker - Track: one moderator - Tutorial: one instructor How to Present ============== The deadline for accepting abstracts and slides is 06 March 2009. While the majority of speaking slots may be filled by that date, a limited number of slots may be available after that date for topics that are exceptionally timely, important, or critical to the operations of the Internet. The primary speaker, moderator, or author should submit presentation information and an abstract on-line at: http://pc.nanog.org Once you have done this, you will receive instructions for submitting your draft slides. See Presentation Guidelines for complete submission guidelines. All submissions must include: - Author's name(s) - Preferred contact email address - Submission category (General Session, Panel, Tutorial, Research Forum, or BOF) - Presentation title - Abstract - Slides (attachment or URL), in PDF (preferred) or Powerpoint format (Slides are optional for BOFs.)
