2009 NANOG charter amendments

The NANOG charter is the document which governs the operation of NANOG, and the relationship between the community and NANOG's hosting organization, Merit Network. The current text is at http://www.nanog.org/governance/charter/ . During the NANOG annual election, voters are given the opportunity to decide on amendments to the NANOG charter. Typically, the amendment process has been used to remedy oversights, modify processes with the benefit of experience, and to correct and tighten language. This year, the election is being held during the NANOG meeting October 18-21 in Dearborn, MI. There are two ways to put an amendment on the ballot: - Vote by a majority of the Steering Committee - A petition signed by at least 30 eligible voters, and submitted by September 28, 2009. If you have any suggestions for amendments, or would like to comment on NANOG governance in general, please join the discussion on the nanog-futures list, or contact the Steering Committee or any of its members directly. NANOG Updates

NANOG Community: As the summer months begin to draw to a close, I hope many of you are making your plans to attend NANOG47. It is sure to be a great program and great meeting venue for all to network. If you have not yet sent your presentation abstract, please submit your materials to http://pc.nanog.org, as the NANOG Program Committee is accepting a few more presentations for consideration. Of additional note, the registration fee will increase on September 14, and the hotel NANOG group rate will expire on September 30, 2009. So don't wait, visit nanog.org for all the latest information and links to registration, the hotel, and local points of interest. In addition to the NANOG47 agenda, we encourage you to take part in the the 5th Annual NANOG Election process. The election information can be found at http://nanog.org/governance/elections/2009elections/ . Please take a moment to review the Eligible Voters list to confirm we have not missed you, and do consider sending a nomination for the Steering, Program, and Mail List committees. The process works well when the community, you, become engaged. As reported at NANOG46 and in NANOG-Futures, the NANOG Marketing Working Group is active and has a new list of sponsorship opportunities for consideration, http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog47/sponsorships.php . We can not emphasize enough how important NANOG Sponsorship is to our efforts in keeping the cost of registration in check. A balance of both allows Merit to provide the level of support the community has come to expect. Please do consider recommending a sponsorship opportunity to your marketing representatives and or send a note to marketing(a)nanog.org with any new ideas you may have. The community will be, and is, very appreciative and in return it is a great opportunity for Sponsors to have access to a diverse group which represent the spirit of NANOG. NANOG Election Time line 2009

Hello NANOGers! Per the charter (http://nanog.org/governance/charter/) we are approaching the annual NANOG election and appointment time. In addition to the series of "call for nominations" messages at the opening of each period, we thought to send an overview and time line ahead of the actual nominations opening. Hopefully this will get more of the eligible members of the community to consider standing for a role in one of the Committees that helps makes NANOG what it is. = NANOG Steering Committee The NANOG Steering Committee works closely with Merit to promote, support and improve NANOG. The Steering Committee is responsible for the selection of the Program Committee and the Mailing List Committee, and is the community's instrument for ensuring that the NANOG organization remains open, relevant and useful. Elections for three of the seven positions on the Steering Committee will be held in October 2009. The currently-serving Steering Committee members whose terms are expiring are Steve Feldman, Jared Mauch and Chris Morrow. Chris has served two consecutive terms so per the charter, he cannot be considered for re-election until October 2010. There are no restrictions on eligible candidates, but Steering Committee members must commit to attending two out of every three annual NANOG meetings per the charter (6.2.6). A good candidate will have experience with Internet engineering, operations, and governance organizations as well as the principles and practices which guide them. Consensus organizing, leadership, outreach and communication skills are prized. = NANOG Program Committee The Program Committee is a group of sixteen individuals from the NANOG community who together are responsible for the solicitation and selection of material for NANOG meeting Programs. A new Program Committee will be selected by the Steering Committee after the election in October. Eight positions are to be filled. The currently-serving Program Committee members whose terms are expiring are Joel Jaeggli, Rodney Joffe, Sylvie LaPerriere, Kevin Oberman, Lane Patterson, Ren Provo, Josh Snowhorn and Todd Underwood. Furthermore, Joel, Ren, Josh and Todd have all served two consecutive terms so per the charter, they cannot be considered for another Program Committee appointment until October 2010. Per the NANOG charter (6.2.1), eligible candidates are individuals who have attended at least one NANOG meeting in the past 12 months (one or more of NANOG 45, NANOG 46 or NANOG 47). Broad technical knowledge of Internet operations and familiarity with NANOG meetings are useful attributes. Having constructive opinions and ideas about how NANOG meetings might be improved is of high value. = NANOG Mailing List Committee The Mailing List Committee is a group of five individuals from the NANOG community who together are responsible for the administration and moderation of the NANOG mailing lists. A new Mailing List Committee will be selected by the Steering Committee after the election in October. Two positions are to be filled. The currently-serving Mailing List Committee members whose terms are expiring are Kris Foster and Simon Lyall. The main NANOG mailing list serves an important role in the community by providing a day-to-day forum for network operators. Participating in the MLC gives you the opportunity to make a noticeable contribution. The MLC is covered under section 7.1.2 of the NANOG charter. = Why? If you care about NANOG as a set of fora and think you would like to take a turn at volunteering your time to help make it better, please consider either volunteering yourself or nominating someone else. NANOG46 survey open until July 6

Hi folks! Thanks very much for helping to make a successful NANOG in Philadelphia. If you haven't already (and we know a lot of those in attendance did not), then please visit the easy-to remember redirection URL http://tinyurl.com/nanog46 A lot of our direction for the structure and mechanics of meetings stem from the survey data. The Program and Steering Committee really need to have your feedback on the meeting to capitalize on what was successful and avoid what was not. The Mailing List Committee needs input on your use -or lack- of the attendee list. Merit needs to hear your comments on the hotel, facilities and meeting execution. If you attended remotely, we need your input too! Not just regarding the content you watched, commented on, or purposefully skipped, but what prevented you from attending and how we as an organization can address those issues. If you have colleagues which attended (in person or via the webcast) but may not be paying attention to this mailing list, please do give them the survey URL so we can get their comments too. Cheers! change in roles on the program committee

today, at our lunchtime meeting, the nanog program committee selected a new chair, david meyer of cisco and university of oregon, and a new vice-chair, tom daly of dynamic network services. please join me in cogratulating them in person if you're here at nanog. for the past two years, ren provo has served as vice-chair of the program committee, a role that was basically created specifically for her. she has been critical in the development of the program committee into the open, active, and even somewhat-organized group that it is today. i'm proud to have worked with her on this project for the past two years and am extremely grateful for everything she has done. ren and i decided to resign our positions prior to the october meeting to ensure a smooth transition. we will both continue to serve as members of the program committee through the end of our current terms in october. NANOG has been getting better and better for the last several years. we're announcing locations much earlier and we're continuing to develop and experiment with the content to make it more relevant and more interesting for attendees. credit for these efforts certainly go to members of the steering and mailing list committees and to merit staff, but they also go to the program committee. the nanog program committee is full of some of the smartest, best people that i've ever worked with. it's a pleasure to be associated with them. eight (8) of the slots on the program committee will be opening up this october. if you'd like to work with other interesting people to make the nanog conference better, please consider submitting your name to be considered for one of these slots. the steering committee will announce details, or you can come see almost any member of the PC for more information. again, congratulations to dave and tom. cheers, todd underwood, outgoing chair for the program committee spots opening up in october

Hi folks, Just a few reminders - The registration fee for NANOG46 is set to go up from US$525 to US$600 on Monday. https://nanog.merit.edu/registration/ The general program is full at this time. Lightning talks are being accepted at http://pc.nanog.org. Three lightning talks will be selected next Tuesday for presentation on Monday the 15th of June. http://nanog46.comcast.net offers suggestions for site-seeing, food and transport. Some have asked what is the best way to get to the Loews Hotel from the Philadelphia Airport. Without a doubt the train is the best bang for your $7. Follow the signs when baggage claim, ground transportation and exit are mentioned. You can purchase the ticket on the train. Market East is the exit and the hotel is across the street from the Hard Rock at the corner of 12th & Market. See you in about a week! -ren

two quick reminders: 1) the nanog discount rate on the hotel is mostly (but not completely) full and i believe it expires today. if you're planning on coming to nanog, please register for the conference and book a hotel room. or pay more for the privilege of both experiences. https://nanog.merit.edu/registration/ http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog46/hotel.php 2) lightning talk submissions are now open. lightning talks are short (10 minutes), topical and timely. and they are done at the last minute (a feature which endears them to many of us). lightning talks submitted by jun 8 will be voted on by the program committee on our jun 9 call just prior to the start of nanog 46. lightning talks will continue to be accepted through tuesday of the conference, although the sooner you get your abstract in, the more likely we will be to accept your talk. several talks have already been submitted so if you've got a good idea, now is the time to write it up and get it in. i'm very much looking forward to seeing all of you in philadelphia. todd underwood, chair nanog program committee

Hi Folks: One Last set of meeting reminders!! If you have not yet made your hotel reservations, you might want to consider doing so as the NANOG hotel room rate ends on Friday, May 29. Make sure to complete your NANOG registration soon, you do not want to miss out on an excellent program and opportunity to catch up in person with members of the NANOG community. On Monday, June 8 the registration late fee goes into effect. Lastly, do not forget to get those lighting talk ideas submitted! Look forward to seeing everyone in sunny Philly.
