*Hello NANOGers! This message is to encourage you, as a participant of this community, to become NANOG members and to consider standing for a leadership position at our upcoming October elections. The call for Board members nominations will be from August 20 to October 1 and for committee members from Sept 17 to October 23. We wanted to provide you now with the election process preview. It’s posted at http://www.nanog.org/governance/elections/2012elections/ and we’ll make announcements at every step. Why should you become a NANOG member? One Member = One Voter = One Eligible Candidate Candidate and Voter eligibility are opened to every ‘member in good standing’. You may never have attended a conference but as an active reader and poster on our mailing lists, you contribute to the knowledge of this community. Becoming a NANOG member gives you the right to stand for a position and to vote in October. You can join at http://www.nanog.org/membership_main.html. What is expected of Committee Candidates? The Board members whose terms are expiring in October are: * Patrick Gilmore * Daniel Golding * Michael K. Smith Patrick has served two 2-year terms and cannot be considered for re-electionuntil October 2013 (one year leave). Daniel is completing the term vacated in June 2012 and he can stand for re-election. Michael is completing the term vacated in August 2011 and he can stand for re-election. How do you Nominate? You can self-nominate. You care about NANOG’s governance and want to take a turn at volunteering your time and expertise to help make it better. 1. Make sure you are a NANOG member in good standing 2. Submit your Declaration of Candidacy to elections(a)nanog.org. You can nominate others. 1. NANOG 55 Survey Highlights and Upcoming NANOG 56/ARIN XXX

NANOG Colleagues, NANOG 55 Attendees, We hope you are having a great Summer. We are already hard at work preparing for NANOG 56/ARIN XXX in Dallas. Take a moment now to register for the conference and book your hotel room at http://www.nanog.org/meetings/nanog56/nanog56_registration.html We had 525 registrants in Vancouver last June and I want to share the surveys highlights. The survey participation rate was 14%. We are thankful for your answers as knowing your preferences increases the likelihood of planning future 'awesome' events for you. Highlights: * Your top 3 reasons to attend NANOG are 1) network with colleague 2) the agenda (program) quality and content 3) tutorials. Closely followed by 4) socials, 5) keynotes and 6) location. * You rated the quality of our speakers, the quality of the technical information presented and the technical relevance of topics as either 'excellent' or 'very good'. * You are generally not commenting about the NANOG conference on social media platforms during the event. * 78% of attendees were able to successfully associate to the wireless network on their first attempt * You thought the Westin was great for its location, its setting and its amenities (nice to know for future picks!) * You come to NANOG to meet new people, socially interact with colleagues and learn. * You generally are not a subscriber to our mailing lists: nanog@, nanog-announce@, nanog-futures@ First-Time attendees enjoyed their NANOG experience and are hopeful that they will be able to return to future meetings. Some are even planning to bring along colleagues. Comments for speakers were really appreciated. We shared with those presenting, thereby helping speakers with future presentations and communicating attendees' expectations with respect to presentation content and its delivery. The Food & Beverage (F&B) comments were great. You are generally very pleased with the quality and the variety. We note that your level of satisfaction increases if you are continuously caffeinated or hydrated during the day and if offered plenty of beer/wine/spirits/sodas during the evenings. We took good note of your suggestions and look for them at NANOG 56. Special thanks for embracing (ie not complaining) our 'green options' : favouring large dispensers over individual plastic bottles or cans saves us lots of money and reduces our environmental footprint. Reminder: Call for Presentations Open for NANOG 56 in Dallas, TX

NANOG Community, After a great NANOG in Vancouver, BC, the survey results are in from 55 and we are already assembling a world-class program for NANOG 56. The North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) will hold its 56th meeting in Dallas, TX on October 21 - 23, 2012 and join with ARIN on October 24, 2012. Terremark, a Verzion company, will be our host for NANOG 56. The NANOG Program Committee is now seeking proposals for presentations, panels, tutorials, tracks sessions, and keynote materials for the NANOG 56 program. We invite presentations highlighting issues relating to technology already deployed or soon-to-be deployed in the Internet. Vendors are encouraged to work with operators to present real-world deployment experiences with the vendor's products and interoperability. Announcing a Monday to Wednesday NANOG Program Starting at NANOG 57 (Feb 2013)

Colleagues, At our NANOG 55 Community meeting Dave Temkin presented the PC proposal to move our Conference Program to a Monday-to-Wednesday format. Originating from the community, this proposal was developed and refined in the last year using the conference surveys. We surveyed you one last time at NANOG 55. The majority spoke in favour and the Board approved this change on June 22. I am pleased to announce that starting in February 2013, at NANOG 57 Orlando, the NANOG Conference program will : - start Monday morning with Tutorials; - have the Keynote kick off the Plenary after Monday's lunch; - add a standing Policy Track programmed by ARIN; - move the Peering Track to Wednesday afternoon. The net result will provide a Conference Program with 10% more content: +15 min of General Session and +90 min of Unique Track. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Nate Davis and John Curran (ARIN partners), Betty Burke (Executive Director), Dave Temkin (PC Chair), Greg Dendy (PC VIce-Chair) and each and every PC member (Nina, Jim, Tom, Ryan, Kevin, Igor, Greg H, Manish, Mohit, David, Dani, Tom, Michael, Tony) for the careful thought and consideration they afforded this proposal over the past 9 months. NANOG Colleagues, The Board has met last Friday June 22 and appointed Dan Golding as the replacement board member until the next election. He will join our next Board on July 6. Board Member Replacement Process - close June 20 23:59 PDT

*Colleagues, If you are interested in the board replacement position please read on, if not, you may stop now. Following our announcement, many of you are pinging me to serve as the replacement on the Board. Your interest in our organization is amazing and truly encouraging! The process for Board replacement is laid out in our bylaws in Section 8.7. and the intent is to keep a functioning Board running until the next elections. Per our presentation at the NANOG 55 Community meeting we have a full list of deliverables until then. So basically the replacement position is 5-8 hours/week of volunteering inclusive of regular board meetings. 8.7 Vacancies If a Board of Directors member resigns or a Board of Directors seat otherwise becomes vacant more than two months before the next election, the remaining members of the Board of Directors will appoint a replacement to serve until the next election, at which point if there is any additional time remaining in the term a member will be elected to fill the vacancy. If a vacancy occurs less than two months before an election, the seat will remain vacant until the election As we are more than 2 months away from our next elections, the Board has to appoint a replacement (a member in good standing) for the interim. The replacement will serve on the Board until the next election only. Continuance on the Board will be dependent on being properly elected next October, per our election process described in Section 8. Board of Directors. Who are we looking for? * *The short answer is ‘a good election candidate (per the below)’ plus ‘a high degree of familiarity with NANOG’. A good candidate will have experience with Internet engineering, operations, and governance organizations as well as the principles and practices which guide them. A strong candidate should have experience with NANOG through meeting attendance, meeting presentations, serving on a committee, and have been an active member of the NANOG mailing list for a minimum of 3 years. Consensus organizing, leadership, outreach and communication skills are prized, and a willingness to be engaged in the governance process is required. A board member (committee liaisons) is expected to volunteer 5 hours per week while a board officer (Chair, vice-chair, treasurer, secretary) is expected to volunteer 5-8 hours per week, all year round. How do you apply? We are reaching out to members and if you want to be a candidate for this replacement with a term of about 3 months, please write to board(a)newnog.orgbefore June 20 23:59 PDT and state your name, your affiliation and describe your readiness, your ability (check with your employer if you can afford the time!) and motivation to serve for this interim. You will have to demonstrate familiarity with our activities and be available to attend our bi-weekly Board meetings held Fridays from 14:00-15:00 EDT from June 22 to September 28. Board Announcement to the NANOG Community

Colleagues: The NANOG Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of Richard Steenbergen on June 11, 2012. Richard wrote that '*recent personal and career changes have made it impossible to devote as much time and attention to NANOG** as is needed. Therefore, I must officially tender my resignation. It has been a privilege to work with you all, and I hope I have the opportunity to do so again in the future*.” Richard has served four years on the NANOG Program Committee and nearly two years on the NANOG Board during these important transition years. We are saddened to loose Richard and wish him every success in his new activities. On behalf of the Board I want to express to Richard our sincere thanks for his contribution to NANOG. A note to all NANOG Colleagues

*NANOG Colleagues: Just a year ago, NewNOG, prepared for the launch of NANOG 52 under a new leadership. The journey has been filled with challenges, but also with GREAT success. We delivered on our promise to ‘not break anything’ and preserve your user experience during the transition. Mission accomplished: we produced NANOG 52, 53, 54 while each time learning, documenting and improving upon the previous one. We are thankful for your tolerance with change and are confident for the future. The important highlights we gleamed from our meetings and various conversations in the community were to provide transparency in our governance and continuance of the NANOG value set. The Board and NANOG Committees representatives met off-site last August to assess NANOG’s core values, its important services and the meaning of its brand for attendees. The outcome was a 3-year strategic plan with milestones to provide this board and its successors with a documented foundation for continuity. Sponsors, members, and meeting attendees have been very supportive and pleased with our progress, and simply wish to continue to enjoy being a part of NANOG activities. That is encouraging and a sign that we are moving in the right direction. In the spirit of transparency, and to recognize the hard work and dedication of the Board and Committee members, I want to call out their achievements: - Their personal commitment to attend bi-weekly Board meetings and their dedication in showing progress on their area of responsibility. - The Board and Development Committee created a sustainable sponsorship model <http://www.nanog.org/sponsors/sponsor_opportunities.html>compliant with our non-profit status providing adequate funding for our current activities such as our mailing-lists, archives, and conferences while planning for the launch of our educational/training activities. - The Development Committee members fully met the respective Sponsorship plan targets for NANOG 52, 53, 54 and 55. We are financially sound. - The Program Committee delivered outstanding Programming for NANOG 53 and NANOG 54, exceeding all previous expectations at respectively 583 and 604 registrants. - The Program Committee delivered yet another outstanding Conference Agenda for NANOG 55 opening next week in Vancouver. - The Communications Committee continuously manages the mailing lists and our website services. - The Membership committee continues to provide value and benefits to its members since its creation in February 2011. - The Board documented the roles, responsibilities of all Committee members. - The Board executed venue contracts for NANOG 56, 57, and closing on 58. - The Board secured a support structure (Secretariat, Executive Director, Conference technical services, event webcasting) without the burden of creating an employee set of responsibilities. - The Treasurer prepared and filed our first audited financial report. - The Executive Director has lead the transition phase of moving the NANOG equipment and Intellectual property onto their new locations. - The Executive Director has continued the strong relations with ARIN as we are exploring new ways of partnering in support of our common community. - The Executive Director and the NANOG Secretariat have developed smooth operational processes. - The NANOG Secretariat is a great team. They took special care in documenting processes and procedures as we learned our new ways. We now have a solid playbook for our continued operations. They also attended all our committees, minuted and published. As we approach our Election process next October, let me share a few personal thoughts with you. We are not yet done. It is critical that we complete the service transition steps, continue to streamline the responsibilities of event planning and support. We need to execute on our commitment to launch our educational and scholarship initiatives. In preparation for the election process and the need to reflect and set new goals, I will be pleased to share with the community a summary of our Board Retreat, Strategic Goals, and a peak into our future. My hope is that you will find an activity worthy of your volunteering. Please plan to attend the NANOG Member Meeting, Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 5:45-6:45 pm (PST).
