NANOG Colleagues, The Board has met last Friday June 22 and appointed Dan Golding as the replacement board member until the next election. He will join our next Board on July 6. We would like to thank everyone who submitted their candidacy for this interim. Your desire to serve is encouraging. We had previously announced that we would communicate this appointment on June 22. Board Member Replacement Process - close June 20 23:59 PDT

*Colleagues, If you are interested in the board replacement position please read on, if not, you may stop now. Following our announcement, many of you are pinging me to serve as the replacement on the Board. Your interest in our organization is amazing and truly encouraging! The process for Board replacement is laid out in our bylaws in Section 8.7. and the intent is to keep a functioning Board running until the next elections. Per our presentation at the NANOG 55 Community meeting we have a full list of deliverables until then. So basically the replacement position is 5-8 hours/week of volunteering inclusive of regular board meetings. 8.7 Vacancies If a Board of Directors member resigns or a Board of Directors seat otherwise becomes vacant more than two months before the next election, the remaining members of the Board of Directors will appoint a replacement to serve until the next election, at which point if there is any additional time remaining in the term a member will be elected to fill the vacancy. If a vacancy occurs less than two months before an election, the seat will remain vacant until the election As we are more than 2 months away from our next elections, the Board has to appoint a replacement (a member in good standing) for the interim. The replacement will serve on the Board until the next election only. Continuance on the Board will be dependent on being properly elected next October, per our election process described in Section 8. Board of Directors. Who are we looking for? * *The short answer is ‘a good election candidate (per the below)’ plus ‘a high degree of familiarity with NANOG’. A good candidate will have experience with Internet engineering, operations, and governance organizations as well as the principles and practices which guide them. A strong candidate should have experience with NANOG through meeting attendance, meeting presentations, serving on a committee, and have been an active member of the NANOG mailing list for a minimum of 3 years. Consensus organizing, leadership, outreach and communication skills are prized, and a willingness to be engaged in the governance process is required. A board member (committee liaisons) is expected to volunteer 5 hours per week while a board officer (Chair, vice-chair, treasurer, secretary) is expected to volunteer 5-8 hours per week, all year round. How do you apply? We are reaching out to members and if you want to be a candidate for this replacement with a term of about 3 months, please write to board(a)newnog.orgbefore June 20 23:59 PDT and state your name, your affiliation and describe your readiness, your ability (check with your employer if you can afford the time!) and motivation to serve for this interim. You will have to demonstrate familiarity with our activities and be available to attend our bi-weekly Board meetings held Fridays from 14:00-15:00 EDT from June 22 to September 28. Board Announcement to the NANOG Community

Colleagues: The NANOG Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of Richard Steenbergen on June 11, 2012. Richard wrote that '*recent personal and career changes have made it impossible to devote as much time and attention to NANOG** as is needed. Therefore, I must officially tender my resignation. It has been a privilege to work with you all, and I hope I have the opportunity to do so again in the future*.” Richard has served four years on the NANOG Program Committee and nearly two years on the NANOG Board during these important transition years. We are saddened to loose Richard and wish him every success in his new activities. On behalf of the Board I want to express to Richard our sincere thanks for his contribution to NANOG. A note to all NANOG Colleagues

*NANOG Colleagues: Just a year ago, NewNOG, prepared for the launch of NANOG 52 under a new leadership. The journey has been filled with challenges, but also with GREAT success. We delivered on our promise to ‘not break anything’ and preserve your user experience during the transition. Mission accomplished: we produced NANOG 52, 53, 54 while each time learning, documenting and improving upon the previous one. We are thankful for your tolerance with change and are confident for the future. The important highlights we gleamed from our meetings and various conversations in the community were to provide transparency in our governance and continuance of the NANOG value set. The Board and NANOG Committees representatives met off-site last August to assess NANOG’s core values, its important services and the meaning of its brand for attendees. The outcome was a 3-year strategic plan with milestones to provide this board and its successors with a documented foundation for continuity. Sponsors, members, and meeting attendees have been very supportive and pleased with our progress, and simply wish to continue to enjoy being a part of NANOG activities. That is encouraging and a sign that we are moving in the right direction. In the spirit of transparency, and to recognize the hard work and dedication of the Board and Committee members, I want to call out their achievements: - Their personal commitment to attend bi-weekly Board meetings and their dedication in showing progress on their area of responsibility. - The Board and Development Committee created a sustainable sponsorship model <http://www.nanog.org/sponsors/sponsor_opportunities.html>compliant with our non-profit status providing adequate funding for our current activities such as our mailing-lists, archives, and conferences while planning for the launch of our educational/training activities. - The Development Committee members fully met the respective Sponsorship plan targets for NANOG 52, 53, 54 and 55. We are financially sound. - The Program Committee delivered outstanding Programming for NANOG 53 and NANOG 54, exceeding all previous expectations at respectively 583 and 604 registrants. - The Program Committee delivered yet another outstanding Conference Agenda for NANOG 55 opening next week in Vancouver. - The Communications Committee continuously manages the mailing lists and our website services. - The Membership committee continues to provide value and benefits to its members since its creation in February 2011. - The Board documented the roles, responsibilities of all Committee members. - The Board executed venue contracts for NANOG 56, 57, and closing on 58. - The Board secured a support structure (Secretariat, Executive Director, Conference technical services, event webcasting) without the burden of creating an employee set of responsibilities. - The Treasurer prepared and filed our first audited financial report. - The Executive Director has lead the transition phase of moving the NANOG equipment and Intellectual property onto their new locations. - The Executive Director has continued the strong relations with ARIN as we are exploring new ways of partnering in support of our common community. - The Executive Director and the NANOG Secretariat have developed smooth operational processes. - The NANOG Secretariat is a great team. They took special care in documenting processes and procedures as we learned our new ways. We now have a solid playbook for our continued operations. They also attended all our committees, minuted and published. As we approach our Election process next October, let me share a few personal thoughts with you. We are not yet done. It is critical that we complete the service transition steps, continue to streamline the responsibilities of event planning and support. We need to execute on our commitment to launch our educational and scholarship initiatives. In preparation for the election process and the need to reflect and set new goals, I will be pleased to share with the community a summary of our Board Retreat, Strategic Goals, and a peak into our future. My hope is that you will find an activity worthy of your volunteering. Please plan to attend the NANOG Member Meeting, Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 5:45-6:45 pm (PST). 2012 Postel Scholarship

Colleagues: On behalf of the North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) and the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), we would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to the 2012 Postel Network Operator's Scholarship. The Postel Network Operator's Scholarship targets personnel from developing countries who are actively involved in Internet development, in any of the following roles: •Engineers (Network Builders) •Operational and Infrastructure Support Personnel •Educators and Trainers This is not a postgraduate fellowship or academic scholarship. Individuals may nominate themselves for the Scholarship via email or online form. The Scholarship will be awarded annually to a recipient selected by a committee comprising representatives from the NANOG Board of Directors and the ARIN Board of Trustees. The selection committee will "whimsically" select the annual recipient exclusively in response to the question: "What Would Jon Do?" if he were asked to select a recipient. The successful applicant will be provided with transportation to and from the NANOG and ARIN joint meeting October 21-26, 2012, in Dallas, Texas, USA, and a reasonable (local host standard) allowance for food and accommodation. In addition, all fees for participation in both meetings' events will be waived. The final grant size is determined according to final costs and available funding. The chosen recipient will be advised at least 2 months prior to the fall meeting date. Applications from qualified individuals are now being accepted. The deadline for application is June 1, 2012, and the awardees will be informed by July 16, 2012.
