Seeking NANOG Communications Committee candidates for upcoming elections and my farewell

Greetings NANOG friends and colleagues! This month, elections will take place at NANOG 56 in Dallas, TX. There are currently two open positions available on the NANOG Communications Committee for the upcoming term. Some brief information about the Committee and what we are seeking: The Communications Committee will consist of at least three members selected by the Board of Directors. Members of the Communications Committee may not serve concurrently on the Board of Directors. The chairperson of the Communications Committee will serve ex officio in a non-voting role on the Board of Directors, in order to facilitate communication between the two groups. One of the primary functions of Communications Committee is the maintenance of a community mailing list (the NANOG operators list). The Communications Committee will be responsible for the administration and minimal moderation of the list. The Board of Directors will select the new Communications Committee members after the election in October. Two positions are to be filled. The main NANOG mailing list serves an important role in the community by providing a day-to-day forum for network operators. Participating as a member of the Communications Committee gives you the opportunity to make a noticeable contribution. All candidates will be asked to complete a questionnaire about their qualifications, and to submit a Declaration of Candidacy (DoC), which is available at https://www.nanog.org/governance/elections/2012elections/2012_Declaration_of _Candidacy.docx. Personally, I will not be able to run again as I have now served two terms (four years) on the Committee and will be termed out. It has been a pleasure serving the members of NANOG and the Board of Directors during these last four years, from when I first started on the Mailing List Committee and watched over the transformation into what is now the Communications Committee. I'd like to thank the NANOG community for giving me this opportunity as it has certainly been an enjoyable experience. I hope to serve the community again in the future. NANOG Election Update

Colleagues: The final stages of our annual NANOG Election process is underway. Today, October 1, 2012 is the last day to submit nominations to the NANOG Board of Directors. The NANOG Board is responsible for ensuring NANOG operates in a way that is consistent with our Bylaws, financially sound, and helps to ensure NANOG is an organization that meets the needs of the internet community and the NANOG Members. Please consider a self-nomination, or a nomination of someone you feel would be a strong candidate. Refer to http://www.nanog.org/governance/elections/2012elections/ for complete information. If you are not yet a member of NANOG, or have not yet renewed your membership, please consider doing so. As of this writing, NANOG has 315 members! There are additional benefits to membership, however, the most important is the control members have through their votes. Only members can vote, and are eligible to serve on the NANOG Board and NANOG Committees; thus helping to decide the direction of NANOG. Proposed NANOG bylaws amendments

Please review and comment on the proposed amendments to the NANOG bylaws at: https://sites.google.com/a/newnog.org/bylaws-2012/ It has become apparent that cleaning up and simplifying our bylaws will be a long-term project, more than can be accomplished in a single election cycle. These proposed amendments are intended as the first in a series to accomplish those goals, to fix a few outstanding issues and to provide a framework for future improvement. Please direct discussion to the members(a)nanog.org or nanog-futures(a)nanog.org list as appropriate. The board will be voting on final ballot language early in October based on these recommendations and your input. Note that there is also a procedure for members to directly place amendments ballot by petition, as described in section 14 of the bylaws. Thanks, Steve

Update on NANOG board and committee nomination process

I would like to remind everyone about some important dates that are coming up for the NANOG governance process: * September 17, 2012: The nomination process for NANOG Program Committee Candidates begins. * October 1, 2012 the nomination process for the NANOG Board of Directors closes. The NANOG Program Committee is a group of sixteen individuals from the NANOG community who together are responsible for the solicitation and selection of material for NANOG meeting programs. Per the NANOG bylaws, eligible candidates each will serve a two-year term. To be eligible to be appointed as a member of the Program Committee, an individual must have attended one NANOG conference within the prior calendar year (12 months) and be a member in good standing. Candidates should have a broad technical knowledge of Internet operations and be familiar with NANOG meetings. Having constructive opinions and ideas about how NANOG meetings might be improved is of high value. A willingness to recruit presentations for each meeting is required. Please send nominations to nominations(a)nanog.org. If you are nominating another person, please provide that person's name and email address. If you are nominating yourself, please provide a Statement of Intent and a Biography, each with a suggested limit of 150 words. For samples, please see the 2011 candidate lists (http://www.nanog.org/governance/elections/2011elections/) The NANOG Board of Directors is a group of six elected members and NANOG's Executive Director. The Board of Directors is responsible for and works closely with the Committee Chairs to promote, support, and improve NANOG. The Board is responsible for the selection of the Program Committee, the Communications Committee, and the Development Committee. The Board is responsible to the members ensuring that the NANOG organization remains, open, relevant, useful, and financially sound. Please read the Board Member Responsibilities (http://www.nanog.org/governance/BOD_Responsibilities.pdf) and NANOG bylaws (https://newnog.org/docs/newnog-bylaws-20110104.pdf) for a complete understanding of the expectations placed on Board Members. To ensure continuity on the Board, three seats out of six become open each year due to the expiration of 2-year terms. The Board members whose terms are expiring in October are: * Patrick Gilmore * Daniel Golding * Michael K. Smith Patrick has served two 2-year terms and cannot be considered for re-election until October 2013 (one year leave). Daniel is completing the term vacated in June 2012 and he can stand for re-election. Michael is completing the term vacated in August 2011 and he can stand for re-election. How do you Nominate? You can self-nominate. If you care about NANOG’s governance and want to take a turn at volunteering your time and expertise to help make it better: 1. Make sure you are a NANOG member in good standing 2. Submit your Declaration of Candidacy to elections(a)nanog.org. You can nominate others. 1. Send their contact information to elections(a)nanog.org 2. If they accept the nomination, they will be asked to become a NANOG member in good standing 3.
