Hi What is best practice regarding choosing MTU on transit links? Until now we have used the default of 1500 bytes. I now have a project were we peer directly with another small ISP. However we need a backup so we figured a GRE tunnel on a common IP transit carrier would work. We want to avoid the troubles you get by having an effective MTU smaller than 1500 inside the tunnel, so the IP transit carrier agreed to configure a MTU of 9216. Obviously I only need to increase my MTU by the size of the GRE header. But I am thinking is there any reason not to go all in and ask every peer to go to whatever max MTU they can support? My own equipment will do MTU of 9600 bytes. On the other hand, none of my customers will see any actual difference because they are end users with CPE equipment that expects a 1500 byte MTU. Trying to deliver jumbo frames to the end users is probably going to end badly. Regards, Baldur

IPv6 Deployment for Mobile Subscribers

Is there anyone here working in an ISP where IPv6 is deployed? We are starting to plan the roll-out IPv6 to mobile subscribers (phones) I am interesting in knowing the mask you use for the assignment; whether it is /64 or /128. In RFC 3177, it says: 3. Address Delegation Recommendations The IESG and the IAB recommend the allocations for the boundary between the public and the private topology to follow those general rules: - /48 in the general case, except for very large subscribers. - /64 when it is known that one and only one subnet is needed by design. - /128 when it is absolutely known that one and only one device is connecting. Basically a sole device will be connecting to the internet so I am wondering if this rule is follwed. Cheers -- Ricardo Ferreira

Heap overflow bug in either a widely used ASN.1 library from Objective Systems, apparently popular with cell-radio industry people. Not sure if this will leak over into NANOG land -- but neither are you, and that's most of my point. DO *you* know if this library is used in your routers? Can you find out? How easily and quickly? We noticed on the 12th and 13th there was a significant up tick in traffic served from our Akamai servers as well. I found this as well, which is very helpful. Wish more radio manufacturers were as clear about this in the spec sheet: http://backhaul.help.mimosa.co/backhaul-faq-maximum-tx-power-details In one channel, two chains, it's +24, if using two channels and four chains +21 Tx power. Then it's possible to manually do the link budget and path loss calculations based on that (or plug Tx power dBm + dBi gain for preliminary PTP link calculations into something like Radio Mobile). Began investigating packet loss and latency to Russia earlier this morning. Issue appears to be hit or miss and affecting more than others certain traffic types (lower priority?). Are there any Level 3 engineer who can provide details/assistance? Anyone seeing anything similar?
