How to choose a transit provider?

Hello there, I have started writing a blog which I hope it would help buy transit services from providers by doing various due diligences(technical) i wanted to reach out and ask nanog community’s thoughts on this. What are some of your checklist items ? Price? Their directly peered networks? If they are tier 2,3 who they use as tier 1-2? Are the onnet? I am sure list goes on and on on... IRR Cleanliness

Hi, I'm in the middle of transitioning all of my IRR data from RADb to ARIN and as part of this I am trying to get old stale IRR data cleaned up that other providers have put in place in the past. While doing this I was using the nlnog IRR explorer website and found that a company that I peer with on a public exchange has my ASN listed in an as-macro that they control. The way the as-macro is named I am reasonably confident that they aren't using it for transit related activity, rather they are likely using it for controlling peering activity and filtering on the IX in question. Part of me is okay with this, but given that I've never seen this behavior from any other provider on the three reasonably large exchanges that we participate on I am curious what the community thinks about this. Is this uncommon but acceptable in the eyes of community? Thanks, Graham

Extending network over a dry pair

A quick question for you guys; If you had a single dry pair (pair of copper wires originally for phones) to a remote site that was around 6 miles away, what would you use? We currently are just extending a T1 line to this site, but 1.5Mbps isn't cutting it anymore. Unfortunately it's a research site on a federally protected wildlife preserve so we can't run any new infrastructure (fiber etc) and it isn't in a geographical place where point to point wireless is practical. We were thinking there is some sort of network extender that uses some form of DSL for higher bandwidth capacity. Any suggestions?

Levle3's IRR db

Whats the best way to get in contact with Level3 to make an IRR change... if your not a Level3 customer? I tried emailing rr(a)level3.net but that bounces back as an unmonitored mailbox. There are dup IRR entries in Level3's db for my prefixes (legacy from a carrier I used over 10 years ago). My prefixes are in Arin's IRR and I would like that to be the only source. -John
