Fall 97 NANOG update...

At Bill Norton's suggestion, here's a quick summary of facilities for the Phoenix NANOG: Besides the normal terminal room, we're also deploying 10 BT ethernet hubs (300+ ports) and power receptacles accessable from all seats in the main room. So, bring your laptops (and help us out by bringing ethernet cables if you can). We'll be using DHCP, but will have a few fixed IP addresses available if you must. There will be tables around the entire room for those of you who want to use them (obviously first come etc...). Steve Stuart from DEC has also offered (thanks Steve) to bring his Roam-about wireless stuff, so you can make use of that if he has cards available, or bring your own card and use the network. We're not sure if the roam-about will reach all of the hotel rooms (it is spread out like a resort) so we can't promise. Talking about the hotel, here is some non-technical info: Some of the reasons we picked the hotel: It has a well known micro-brew bar. Cigar room. Fancy coffees. 24 hour room service. Weather at this time is great - high season. The hotel has a really nice swimming pool. Temperatures will be 80s during the day, 50s at night. If you're coming out earlier, Phoenix has great local hiking and climbing, golf, etc. See y'all on the 27th. Multihoming at same NAP/IX?

This is a general question directed to the operators of NAPs or IXs. If company X buys a port, but wants to buy another port for backup purposes, is the 2nd port offered at the same cost, or at a reduced cost? Thanks, Hank

Looking Glass Source

To all interested parties: The availability of this code is being made public in the hope that other ISPs will put up trouble shooting sites of their own. I beleive that the more troubleshooting sites publicly available at the major exchange points the better. I make no guarantees as to the stability or portibility of this code. I have it running on an Ultra 1 with Solaris 2.5.1 and Apache 1.2.4 with mod_perl. I can see no reason why it wouldn't run on any web server with perl installed on it seperately. The code, as written, requires perl 5.004. With a few variable declaration changes it can be made to run under 5.002. It also requires the Net::Telnet module which can be found on CPAN and installed in a matter of minutes. It also requires the CGI module which comes standard with the 5.004 release of PERL. There are five variable near the beginning of the code that need to be defined before this program will work properly. Now that all of that is said, enjoy! I have an exact copy of the nitrous.digex.net page running internally for our NCC. I wrote it all in PERL. I am still fixing up a few pieces of the code (namely the ping and traceroute functions), but when I am finished I would be more than happy to share it with anyone that wants it. I should note that it is written to be utilized on Cisco routers with rsh enabled. The way our NOC does it is: - alternating between 3 and 4 days per week - 12 hours per day - two people per shift This makes for an average of 42 hours per week and a four shifts of two people, or a staff of eight. Keeping a ringer in the rotation is probably not a bad idea either, and of course fnord! a manager is needed, bringing the total to ten. This is not my department, so I'm not the expert I pretend to be. -- "I always drive properly. Operational issue - mae-east
