Has anyone else been having problems modifying domain templates, etc using PGP authentication at the Internic? I called today because I've been having problems for a week and was told that Network Solutions is having difficulties with their PGP keyserver. No ETA on when it's going to be fixed. I'm just wondering if this is the truth or if the tech is just not willing to help me with my domain issues.

Internic Rwhois Server Offline

The Internic rwhois server (rwhois.internic.net, port 4321) is offline. It had been the case for a long time that one of the IP's (.7 of the .6 and .7 in the round robin) had not answered. Now for most of the day neither have. Gotta love being able to look stuff up. Internic, Missing Records, etc.

You've heard me whine about Internic losing the 128.65 record. Unfortunately, I'm advised I can't sue them for losing a record if there's no loss... and we still have the network, just not reverse DNS. What I'd like to get are some quotes of 1) What would you pay for a legacy Class B network, free and clear from all ARIN fees, reverse DNS included for free... for life, prejustified. 2) What would you pay for what we now have... a Class B network with no reverse DNS, with no entry in the ARIN database, which who knows, they may one day invent one with themselves or others as the owners. 3) New non-legacy /16 of address space, complete with the fee accouterments of ARIN. Please direct responses at me or CC the list. I'll summarize if there's interest. Ehud p.s. If you have experience valuing these, and are willing to be a professional expert, let me know.

BGP advertisements of peering points

Forgive a newbie question from a new PAIX peer... I've noticed some ISPs (BBN (*ahem* GTE), UUNET and Verio specifically) are advertising the PAIX peering network (198.32.176.0) as originating from their AS. Its official: www.whitehouse.gov was not down

They knew of no reason why the sites were down, but the sites were working again when the providers got around to checking on Monday. The White House press spokesperson Joe Lockhart reported in his daily briefing the www.whitehouse.gov web site was not down over the weekend, just slow due to all the traffic. Nevertheless, the US Secret Service has been requested to investigate (that should be interesting...) Those were the only official reports I found. Unofficial reports included a router failure, a power failure, a denial of service. Other more extreme rumors were also attracted to the information vacuum. whois database not being updated...

Has anyone noticed that the whois database is not showing updates to objects? What I mean is, although it shows... Database last updated on 27-Mar-99 16:27:44 EST. ...objects are not showing up in the database. Uncle..... I said it was just slightly interesting. I don't intend to track the status of every web site on the Internet. There are several commercial companies which do that. Folks have suddenly discovered a number of government sites are out of service this weekend, and are coming up with all sorts of crazy theories. First of all, I don't know if many of the URL's folks sent me ever worked; so I don't know if the web site is really down or just another dead web link. In addition, people should remember most government webmasters don't work after 4:30pm on Friday. Its not all that unusual for a government web site to crash over the weekend and be down until Monday morning. Because I don't track web sites myself, I'll leave it up to one of the commercial web measurement firms to report if an unusual number of (private, commercial, government) web sites were down over the weekend. Operational points: I'm assuming its merely an interesting confluence of events. The Melissa virus notice is getting big media play, and some folks are turning off their mail (and web) servers just in case. Several reports involve web servers located at one provider's facility. There may be a single cause for those. And finally, sensitization of people because of my original message. BTW, it has been nearly twelve hours, and I still haven't heard back from any providers involved if there was a simple cause why the sites were down. A pair of interesting web site outages

Normally I wouldn't consider either of these very interesting, but both happening at the same time has a slight operational interest. The web site www.atis.org is one of the locations the telephone industry stores its emergency contact information so carriers can contact each other. It is also the web home for the reports issued by the network reliability analysis process. The web site is currently down (4:30 EST) The web site www.whitehouse.gov is a well-known government site, containing a variaty of current event information. This web site is also currently down (4:30 EST). Both sites pass through PSI's Herndon, Virginia offices. I sent a few queries to people before sending this message, but didn't receive an immediate response. I assume its just coincidence these sites failed at the same time.
