Apropos of the recent DSL discussion: I'm looking for a DSL wholesale provider so I can resell to end-users. I called both Covad and Rhythms today. There are exactly two menu options on Covad's auto-attendant: sales and customer service. I didn't think either was appropriate, as I'm looking for the department that deals with resellers and channel partners (and the sales option was to "become a Covad customer", implying that that option was for end-user sales). But that's all there is. There isn't even an option to be forwarded to an operator. I hit the number for sales, waited five minutes, decided I didn't feel like waiting and hung up. I then called Rhythms, dialed zero for the operator, asked for someone who handles resellers, got a human within thirty seconds of being transferred, and started chatting. He asked me a couple questions, found out who the sales rep is that handles my territory, and I expect to get a call back from the sales rep by the end of business tomorrow. To be fair to Concentric, they do return calls, and getting to a live person is not that complicated. Reminds me of Concentric's inane auto-attendant system. I was trying to reach tech support as my DSL line had gone down (Covad/Concentric.) Concentric's voice prompt says "To find out about our technical support please visit our web site at www.concentric.com." Ahhhhhhhhhhgh! I wrote them and complained. They apologized. Nothing changed. It's all part of a vast call-avoidance conspiracy. If there were truth in some of these auto-attendant systems there'd be two prompts: To buy stuff from us press one. To get out of our face and stop costing us money press any other key. June 6 2000 Sprintlink network problem

Since I mentioned I hadn't seen any messages about Sprint outages, several folks forwarded me Sprint's message today. Sprintlink experienced a network problem affecting the eastern portion of the United States starting at 7am June 6 2000. The cause of the problem or the estimated time to repair wasn't known.

First, we can get redundancy by connecting with two ISPs and having them both announce the network (or have one announce if the other dies). Second, we can carve up our /20 in /24s and use them for different Internet POPs for our company (e.g. one in the states, one in Europe, one in the Pacific Rim, etc.). I am primarily a security person but unfortunately our LAN and WAN people know less about this than I so I am trying to decide what we should do. New Mexico survival tips.

Just thought I'd let people know. When in the southwest please note that the temperatures during the day can get as high as 100 in Jun, and into the 50's at nite. Make sure you DRINK PLENTY OF WATER (beer doesn't work) You can dehydrate out here pretty easily. Please DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. The age old way of knowing is how often you have to goto the WC. If you aren't going at least 3 times a day, you are not drinking enough water. If you plan to go hiking, rafting, ballooning, please make sure you wear the appropriate clothes. Good shoes, cotton socks, long pants (jeans), good shirt, maybe even bring some gloves (work type). A hat is a good idea, along with maybe sun block if you plan to be outside. Sunblock is important for light or fair skin'd people, or those that burn easy. Also keep in mind that we are 6000++ feet above sea level. That means the O2 is a little thinner here. Take your time, and rest if you need to. One of the MOST important things to bring with you is your Camera. We have wonderful sun rises and sun sets. Lots of views of mountains, people, culture. If you go for a drive, take water, plenty of water. If you go hiking, take water, plenty of water. If you drink (beer that is, or good scotch) then drink plenty of water, less you have massive headache in the morning. Looking forward to seeing everyone in ABQ. Safe journey. jmbrown
