Broken 3640?

We have a 3640 on the edge running 12.0(9.6)S. It has 2 2W1E's with T1-DSU WIC's in it and 1 1FE NM. About once every minute, the FE card stops sending packets for about 10 seconds resulting in a HIGH and very annoying packet loss. Tries 12.0(10.x)S and replacing the FE cards to no avail. Also, the card has stuck 5 or 6 times with the output queue at 240/240 with no network activity until I reboot it. I'm at a loss here. Any ideas? GAO report on outages at online trading sites

Another government agency weighs in on the lack of public reporting of outage information. Early this year the FCC was working on a "voluntary" method for ISPs to report outages. So far, I haven't heard of a single ISP voluntering. [...] The full GAO report is http://www.gao.gov/new.items/gg00043.pdf One interesting statistic was 11 firms reported a total of 88 outages between January and September 1999. About 40 percent of the outages lasted for less than 25 minutes, but some firms didn't track any outage lasting less than 25 minutes. So there may be a statistical problem with the data. For comparison, the telephone industry reported a total of 170 outages between July 1998 and June 1999. The telephone industry doesn't track most outages lasting less than 30 minutes (except for a few special catagories). Even if you normalize for 3/4 of a year, it seems the Internet is actually more reliable than the telephone network. Or, what I suspect is really happening, both the telephone industries and the online brokers statistics are measuring the wrong stuff. But the real $64000 question is during periods of market volitility, would you be able to reach a broker by telephone easier than you would be able to access an online trading web site. The GAO didn't really answer that question.

Traditional traffic engineering tools/model

Hi nanog, Can any friend tell me that how the major NSP/ISPs do the traffic engineering work, i.e. how do they adjust their traffic to fit their physical bandwidth? I know there are several papers on this issue by Awduche of UUNet, and some engineers of Juniper. Most of them suggest MPLS is the final solution, but I just want to know if there is any best practice to adjust the traffic in a pure igp/metric fashion ? Any handy tools to figure out, or calculate the proper metric value? I tried Netsys, but any better one ? Gee, I thought that IP, BGP, DNS, ACLs, and so on worked the same for women as for men. One of the main reasons I'm on this list is to learn from the experiences and expertise of others - male -and- female. You're of course free to do as you wish, but I personally think the whole idea of a 'Women in Networking' list is absurd, revanchist, and sexist (to use the politically correct terminology currently in vogue amongst those who claim to be striving for 'equality', yet who seem to do everything they can to claim that they themselves have 'special needs' and so on, which of course undermines the rationale their supposedly egalitarian agenda). Technology works the same for everyone, regardless of gender, race, creed, or color; that's one of the beautiful things about it. Consciously erecting artificial boundaries where none need exist strikes me as being laughably archaic, and ultimately counterproductive. But, hey, what do I know? After all, I'm just a member of the oppressive patriachy, dedicated to keeping females barefoot, naked, and in the wiring-closet, right? Talk about your stereotyping. Sorry for the rant, but this sort of thing strikes me as being inimical to the spirit of the Net in general, and this list in particular. The North American Electric Reliability Council has announced "Generation and transmission resources are expected to be adequate to meet projected customer electricy demands in most areas in North America this summer." However areas of concern for this summer are New England, New York and the southwestern area of the United States - California, Arizona, New Mexico and southern Nevada.

One interesting psychological difference is women are generally (gross generalization) better at detecting men pretending to be women on-line, than men detecting either women pretending to be men or men pretending to be women on-line. Just in case any males are thinking of subscribing to the net-girls under false pretenses. On the other hand, this is NANOG. If someone posted "The Earth is round" I suspect we'd have 1 post saying the earth is a sphere 5 posts saying the earth is flat 9 posts correcting them, saying is egg-shaped 2 posts explaining how the shape varies depending on the dynamic properties of the core 1 post saying its bigger on the bottom than on the top 2 posts from Australia claiming the poster was engaging in hemispherism and the globe doesn't have a "bottom" or "top" 2 posts with JPG files from NASA showing the earth is round 3 posts complaining about the size of the JPG images 7 posts saying the images are NSA forgeries 2 posts saying its off-topic for this list 7 posts discussing the appropriate topics for the list 2 posts saying MAE-east could be hit be an asteroid 3 posts discussing off-planet backup facilities 9 posts discussing the RTT of martian packets 5 posts debating on the proper way to calculate the speed of light 3 posts on the SETI@Home project 5 posts on making SETI@Home run on linux machines 1 post asking how to configure a Cisco router to run SETI@Home
