Hey, folks. It's pretty much a fact of life that layoffs are evident. They've happened to a lot of us already, as I know from talking to many people on this list and elsewhere. The market's terrible, and I know that there are a lot of people surfing through job sites not really finding anything. Those of you that are in this boat like I am, it might make more sense to network with each other - as a result, i'd like to start a recruiting BOF for people in the NANOG circle. I'd like to suggest as a starting point that interested parties looking for a job send mail to me privately with a brief overview of your qualifications and a link to a place for your resume. I'll create a webpage and mailing list with this information before the holidays, and i'll send a summary to nanog containing the relevant information for both employers and candidates. Please also include what type of job/ideal function you'd like to be in, and your key area of expertise. If you're an employer needing to be connected with candidates, or you know of any recruiting firms or friends in that business who are having trouble finding qualified network engineering, operations, or design staff with the flood of people in the marketplace, please also send me mail so I can add that information to the list. Hi, I apologize for asking here, but if there are any AOL folks that deal with the USR/3Com dialup gear I have someone over on the usr-tc list that needs a hand with getting a nasty bug resolved in their current (and past) DSP code. Brick wall at 3Com. And if Earthlink (ex-mindspring) is still running these boxes, someone there would be helpful as well. Sorry for the interruption. Because several different people have contacted me about this, I wanted to re-check my facts. Last tuesday/wednesday had a few blips affecting connectivity around the net. - Telstra (Australia) had a backbone network routing meltdown disrupting traffic to/from/within Australia for several hours. Timezone, so this happened wednesday in Australia? - AT&T had a fiber cut in Montana - Sprint terminated peering with Conixion (home of Microsoft Windows Update). Conixion restored traffic via other routes later in the day. Before people forward my e-mail again, did I make any gross errors which I should correct?

Catalyst 6500 Sup mods

Network Operations Luminaries?

Though I can name off several 'credentialed' network engineering gurus and the 'bibles' of network engineering, a recent discussion about the source of network operations 'best practices' left me speechless, and curious. Who is/are the network operations equivalents of people like Peter Drucker and Jack Welch--people who are looked at not only has role models for operations success, but as luminaries in the industry for having established and educated the masses about best practices? What would be the network operations equivalents to revered business tomes like "The Practice of Management", "Seven Habits of Highly Successful People", "The G.E. Way" (and a variety of others that populate the shelves of your friendly local executive)? Most network-oriented training seems to focus on the technology, not on operations (and those subtle but ever so critical differences between knowing how something is /supposed/ to work and how it /really/ works, and all of the effort it takes to create a smooth-running operations engine). What are the network operations equivalents to business programs such as Six Sigma? What about something similar to the various leading institutions of business management, institutions that study of how networks are operated (and used), and develop training and methodologies for better operations practices? Howdy, Anyone know what's up with AT&T Broadband in Minnesota? They appear to be blocking *everything* from 24/8 to 24/8 that isn't port 25/tcp 110/tcp 80/tcp 443/tcp, or icmp. Everything else is being dropped into a growing black hole.. Thanks, Matthew S. Hallacy

IP Management software

Hello, I know the topic of ip space management software has come up before, but it looks like most of the people suggest either free/in-house solutions or QIP and Meta-ip. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with a product called IP Commander by Incognito software? Also, if anyone knows anything about QIP or MetaIP, I would appreciate it if you could respond off-list. I'm looking at all three products to manage our ip address space, and I'd like to talk to someone who's used them in production before. Thanks a lot, Rob

PSI-Net and New York issues????

Hi all Our ISP is PSI-Net and we use then in Oxford (UK), LA and New York all on leased lines. Over the past month the service level in NY (West 46th Street, well out of the way of the WTC) has been not up to its usual standard. We've had lousy pings, bad latency for telnet traffic, routing gone wild etc etc. One problem gets sorted and a few days later another is back again. PSI-net indicate that alot of these problems are being caused by local telco problems.
