Qwest Route Flaps, Houston PoP?

Anyone else connecting the Qwest Houston PoP (Tera or Giga PoP), or more specifically iah-edge-04 router, seeing a increased number of BGP flapping in the last few hours? Our BGP session has stayed active since a mysterious drop 1d09h ago, but we've seen every prefix that doesn't have an AS_PATH of ^209$ withdrawn and released twice within the past hour. *grumbles at the thought of finding someone who knows what BGP is at the Qwest customer service lines.* -- /-------------------------------------------------> Marius Strom | Always carry a short length of fibre-optic cable. I like thinking of where an organization wants to be on a risk/reward spectrum. Newer and/or point solution vendors exist to leapfrog the status quo and give you an advantage, which they do very well. This is particularly true on the optical side, where lasers, components, and software have all changed dramatically. The price you pay is risk. If you don't have capacity problems or take an incumbent role, then you would prefer a defensive, conservative strategy favoring the single-vendor solution. ------ We actually consider risk and choice of vendor to be to be separate principle areas. It is certainly easy to be risky with your use of technology while embracing a single vendor approach, think VoIP. I'd consider ripping out PBX's in favor of VoIP to be risky, and it is certainly a leading edge approach, yet you can buy this type of solution today from the larger vendors. In one example we worked with a customer who was considering using L3 switches with newly released WAN blades in the core of their network. The conservative approach was to stick with a more proven platform, the risky approach was to go with the newer product. Their principles were to use a single vendor, but they also had a principle to use only stable and mature technologies in the core, so they went with the more traditional routing platform. BTW, we also separate out vendor risk - e.g. we create a principle that determines how much vendor risk to accept. The extremes are only buying from proven vendors vs. buying from start-ups with low market share, provided there is some competitive advantage to be gained. Irwin

We're cleaning out a closet here, and have some items that some of you may want for tinkering or historical reasons: -2 (maybe 3) Infotron SuperMux 380's -8 NYNEX and/or BellAtlantic T1 Smart Jacks (they won't take them back - they are non-HDSL models, some with wall-wart, some line-powered) If anyone wants this stuff before it goes in the dumpster, let me know. Anyone know if attbi.net's ever going to clean up their DNS?

Hi, Anyone know if attbi.com's every going to clean up their DNS issues? As far as I can tell, attbi.com is advertising number-to-name for their clients, but if you then check the claimed name by doing name-to-number for consistency, it fails. For example 12.225.116.241 resolves fine to 12-225-116-241.client.attbi.com but then if you try resolving the claimed address of 12-225-116-241.client.attbi.com to a dotted quad, you get a non-existent host/domain error. Obviously this is an issue if you have hosts using tcp wrappers in anti-spoofing (e.g., so-called "paranoid" mode). I tried the number I formerly had for the ATT Worldnet NOC (201-331-4773), but that number is out of service. The ATT IP Services NOC folks at 1-800-288-3199 disclaim any knowledge of ATT BI, and suggest trying 1-877-288-3485. If you call 1-877-288-3485, you get a nice little automated attendant talking about going out of business issues, but no NOC. Looking on the web, I see nothing relevant at http://198.178.8.101/listfaqs.jsp?category_id=19&category_level=1 (although maybe I should take the fact that they're using a dotted quad for their web server as a clue that DNS is not their strong suit). I've also had multiple users tell me that they've complained about this issue to their ATTBI customer support reps, only to be blown off by the first tier support reps; when they ask to talk to a supervisor, they are told "sorry, there's nothing we can do." We went through this all once before back in the days when ATTBI.Com customers were Excite@Home customers, and Excite@Home was finally able to grasp and fix the issue, but right now I'm about ready to start telling users with this issue that they should strongly consider changing broadband providers because it doesn't look like ATTBI's ever going to get their DNS squared away.
