I wonder if this could just be solved by selling fraud insurance? It could be another ridiculous bank surcharge or service, but would negate the need for byzantine technology infrastructures to support it. All that user end security devices do is put more non-repudiable onus on the user, so that when it fails, the service provider is protected, and the user is cryptographically guaranteed to be SOL. Biometrics are an excellent example of this. They are a single factor authentication technology, maybe two factor if there is a PIN, and when the database gets compromised, nobody will believe that the user isn't responsible, because "The System is Perfect". Many security technologies are based upon the risk avoidance paradigm of government/military organizations, instead of the more practical risk management perspective of more nimble organizations. This is partially why alot of technologies aren't getting adopted. They are Perfect, but a burden. The solution that balances security and accessability will be the one that incorporates an acceptable loss expectancy and enables the company to leverage the convenience of that risk. Building massive security structures does little to decrease the actual risk, they just push it out to the edges, that is, to customers. The ubiquity of personal computers as general information appliances has made them more of an interface to the economy than the tools that we are used to using them as. Good morning/day/evening/night/whatever, I'm working on the netlantis project which offers to the public a set of tools regarding the global routing status. Netlantis has multiple so called NRC (Netlantis Route Collectors) which have eBGP multihop sessions with different ISPs around the world in order to collect their full BGP routing table. Netlantis is a non-commercial and independent project. I would be very interested to have one or more RouteCollector(s) in the NA region. Would anyone be able to sponsor this? I would need something like a P3 >= 500Mhz with at least 256Mb of RAM running FreeBSD 4.8 and its colocation. This RouteCollector would then be dedicated to NA peers. The status of consumer rate limiting?

Repost in plain text... just a little too clicky on the send button folks. I'm interested in an informal poll of consumer ISP's regarding application rate-limiting. For all you folks out there managing "broadband" networks to residential end-users: Are you controlling peer-to-peer traffic in some way (i.e. rate-limiting, blocking, etc)? Do you have plans to control peer-to-peer traffic? If you don't mind, can you generally describe how you have implemented any limits and how effective those solutions are? Are you imposing other total traffic download/upload limits? Are your limits imposed via "policy" (nag your abusers) or via "network" (they get blocked automatically)? HD Moore released one today that returns a Local System shell on port 4444. I think its safe to post this now... the AS who asked me this now seems to be gone. Keep in mind we're just a po' little school under the El in Chicago and the network asking was a seemingly large Central/South American provider who was bringing in an OC12 to AADS (compared to our OC3). Carriers using CES in the wild?
