Cisco's "Network Based Application Recognition" can recognise quite a few things, particularly a fair few p2p applications. It looks at the actual contents of packets, not just the port numbers.

Thanks for all your reply. My situation is not to apply QoS policy to those application but to get statistics of applications. According to netflow records, the traffic across our egress interface has port number range from 11 to 65534 , there is record for port 0! Community list REACH

Hey out there. I am in need of a list of community strings that REACH.COM accepts. Does anyone have a list of these? For the last several months I have been trying to get traffic coming from reach to traverse a different path to my AS. This is proving to be a project. Right now they are sending me traffic over Cogent and Cogent doesn't have any decent communities for this type of thing. My Australian customers are getting 400ms traceroutes coming through Telstra > Reach > Cogent to us. This is starting to get to be a VERY annoying problem. Hi, I'm trying to identify applications which generate those traffic on our border routers. I use sampled netflow as data source and some flow-tools as analizer. Currently, I use (protocol, port_number) as indicator of application. Referring to rfc on wellknown protocol and port allocation, I can only identity about 50% of traffic type. Both the Cisco Guard and the Cisco Anomaly Traffic Detector appliances can be managed via a virtual terminal (standard keyboard and monitor attached directly to the appliance), a local serial console, remote SSH connections, and/or remote secure web sessions. Most management and troubleshooting tasks are performed through a CLI interface that is similar to that of most Cisco products, but a special administrative account is provided so certain management and troubleshooting tasks that are not covered by the standard CLI can be performed. The administrative account username is root, like the superuser in the Unix operating system. This account has a default password that is the same in all installations of the Cisco Guard and Cisco Traffic Anomaly Detector in all versions prior to 3.1. This default password is made up of a combination of letters, numbers, and punctuation per best security practices for passwords, but Cisco recommends that this password be changed for extra security. The vulnerability described here is documented in the Cisco Bug ID CSCeg12167 for the Cisco Guard and in the Cisco Bug ID CSCeg12188 for the Cisco Traffic Anomaly Detector. Impact ====== Someone that is able to log into a Cisco Guard or Cisco Traffic Anomaly Detector DDoS mitigation appliance using the root administrative account has full control of the device, which includes the ability to change configurations, divert traffic, and install software. Software Versions and Fixes =========================== While workarounds that do not require a software upgrade exist, Cisco has made available free software that addresses the vulnerability described in this document. Version 3.1 or later of the Cisco Guard and Cisco Traffic Anomaly Detector software does not leave a default password for the administrative root account after a fresh installation or after an upgrade from previous versions. This is because in version 3.1 and later the installation/upgrade procedure requires the user to choose a password for the administrative account. Note: the procedure to upgrade to version 3.1 can only be done through the out-of-band interfaces. A reboot is not required for the new password to take effect, so network operations will not be disrupted. networking related vulnerabilities - floodish december?

It appears like many of us will be very busy this month, on the network front. The linux kernel has two published vulnerabilities (one for IGMP - http://isec.pl/vulnerabilities/isec-0018-igmp.txt) MS released one for DHCP (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=36664) and last but not least - with a wordpad vuln out, we already expect an RTF worm. Any takers on a bet as to when? There is also one for WINS released early this month, and just patched, but it is less relevant for NANOG in my personal opinion. This is a busy month for network admins, not just system people who have to run and patch things. Just an FYI for those who don't often follow these things anymore due to lack of relevance. Gadi.
