Good Afternoon, It is my pleasure to announce that Robert Seastrom will be joining the Nanog Mailing List Administration Team. He joins us as Martin Hannigan departs the list team. A bit about Robert, Robert Seastrom is a freelance consultant specializing in supporting production and testbed IP networks. He was a cofounder and former president of the Cambridge Bandwidth Consortium, a cooperative ISP in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Previously, Robert was the Director of Network Architecture at Inter.Net Global Ltd. Robert has also held positions at Akamai Technologies, AboveNet Communications, and Digex, and built pioneering ISPs in Japan and the Republic of Georgia. With the departure of Martin from the team, the position of chair has been vacated. I have been selected to assume the chair of the list administration team. SBC (AS 7132) contact?

Seeing some random issues with hosting customers of ours unable to get to their sites. Traces out of 7132 seem to stop in and around some of the following: core2-p10-0.crrvca.sbcglobal.net (151.164.42.5) core1-p1-0.crrvca.sbcglobal.net (151.164.188.45) core2-p3-0.cranca.sbcglobal.net (151.164.243.233) core1-p1-0.cranca.sbcglobal.net (151.164.241.221) core2-p11-0.crscca.sbcglobal.net (151.164.242.81) Support from them to our mutual customers won't go past "try clearing your cache" so I'd like to find someone in net ops that can help. :-) Thanks, David

SBC (Formerly Ameritech, formerly Illinois Bell, soon to be AT&T again, yadda yadda yadda) has always maintained and replaced the batteries for the FLM 150s and 600s that are installed in our data center and metro sites. Usually the Transport group knows something is wrong before the mouth-breathers in our data center do. We provide power via UPS and generator by default as the FLMs are fed off the same grids as the rest of our gear. I personally wouldn't treat those batteries as a UPS if only because I've never seen a load test performed on them that tells me what sort of survivability I can expect out of them. For about a year I've been in discussions with a private cable operator (PCO) who has been knocking himself out trying to optimize an approach that would enable him to provide generator backups in apartment buildings. He wants to match the incumbent's triple play offerings, and in particular, he saw the need to provide uninterrupted voice service during commercial power outages not only as an amenity that was needed to compete with the telco, but in order to qualify for lifeline service status, as well. The net effect of seeing what is happening in the FTTP space has given him license now to begin considering options based on the use of batteries, as well. Lifeline qualification and delivering non-stop service availability are two separate, yet related, areas of consideration from a regulatory persepective. I suppose its left to interpretation, but I'm wondering if the ILECs, by their use of a battery-replacement policy may be breaking the models of both. Frank A. Slight OT: NASA World Wind project looking for support from network operators.

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there. Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps, or along the African Sahara. World wind is becoming so popular, that the small community of developers and regular users can no longer afford to sustain the ammount of bandwidth neccessary to deliver all of the satellite data to the client. We're also having bandwidth issues in being able to actually distribute the client software, due to the fact that it is around 188 MB. It is currently the 6th most popular project on sourceforge.net with almost a million downloads in the last 2 months alone. Nasa can no longer host the installation program on their network do to the immense bandwidth usage it creates. What I am asking for is sponsors that are willing to host pieces of the datasets on their network. 1. We currently do not have enough capacity to put all the data we have online and keep it there. 2. We'd also like to setup geographically diverse nodes to enable redunancy and lessen latency. If you are willing to help this project at all, please contact me. Just as a note, a full copy one of the datasets is around 120 Gigabytes (Although we're currently looking into placing partial datasets), and the only community run server tops out (currently) right now at around 15 megabits per second. NASA is also running a web cluster to serve satellite data that is using around 50-75 mbps.
