OARConline 35a will be an online meeting on September 8th 2021 starting at 15:00 UTC. The Programme Committee is seeking contributions from the community. All DNS-related subjects and suggestions for discussion topics are welcome. For inspiration, we provide a non-exhaustive list of ideas: - Deployment: Managing DNS changes and propagation, release process, change management. - Monitoring: Log ingestion pipeline, analytics infrastructure, anomaly detection. - Scaling: Managing service capacity, failovers, disaster recovery. RPKI validation, BGP/allocation lookup UI and API

Hello, The RIPE NCC RPKI Validator historically offered a very complete toolset. One feature that has proven to be a useful troubleshooting tool was the “BGP Preview” [1], letting you compare validated ROA payloads against announcements seen by the RIS route collectors. With the RIPE NCC Validator discontinued, over the last couple of months we’ve been working on replicating this functionality and attempted to improve upon it in several ways. A preview is now available here: https://routinator.nlnetlabs.nl/ Example: https://routinator.nlnetlabs.nl/69.252.0.0%2F12?validate-bgp=true In addition to validating an IP prefix/ASN combination, you can: - automatically lookup the validation ASN in BGP announcements for a specific prefix. - see prefixes that are allocated to the same organisation by an RIR and their RPKI validation status based on BGP announcements or a user supplied ASN. STIR/SHAKEN Broadly Implemented Starting Today https://www.fcc.gov/document/stirshaken-broadly-implemented-starting-today WASHINGTON, June 30, 2021—FCC Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel today announced that the largest voice service providers are now using STIR/SHAKEN caller ID authentication standards in their IP networks, in accordance with the deadline set by the FCC. This widespread implementation helps protect consumers against malicious spoofed robocalls and helps law enforcement track bad actors. The STIR/SHAKEN standards serve as a common digital language used by phone networks, allowing valid information to pass from provider to provider which, among other things, informs blocking tools of possible suspicious calls.

Do you care about "gray" failures? Can we (network academics) help? A 10-min survey

Dear NANOG, Detecting whole-link and node failures is relatively easy nowadays (e.g., using BFD). But what about detecting gray failures that only affect a *subset* of the traffic, e.g. a router randomly dropping 0.1% of the packets? Does your network often experience these gray failures? Are they problematic? Do you care? And can we (network researchers) do anything about it?” Please help us out to find out by answering our short (<10 minutes) anonymous survey. Survey URL: https://forms.gle/v99mBNEPrLjcFCEu8 ## Context: When we think about network failures, we often think about a link or a network device going down. These failures are "obvious" in that *all* the traffic crossing the corresponding resource is dropped. But network failures can also be more subtle and only affect a *subset* of the traffic (e.g. 0.01% of the packets crossing a link/router). These failures are commonly referred to as "gray" failures. Because they don't drop *all* the traffic, gray failures are much harder to detect. Many studies revealed that cloud and datacenter networks routinely suffer from gray failures and, as such, many techniques exist to track them down in these environments (see e.g. this study from Microsoft Azure https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/paper-1…) What is less known though is how much gray failures affect *other* types of networks such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Wide Area Networks (WAN), or Enterprise networks. While the bug reports submitted to popular routing vendors (Cisco, Juniper, etc.) suggest that gray failures are pervasive and hard to catch for all networks, we would love to know more about first-hand experiences. ## About the survey: The questionnaire is intended for network operators. It has a total of 15 questions and should take at most 10 minutes to complete. The survey and the collected data are totally anonymous (so please do not include information that may help to identify you or your organization).
