BGP-Inspect update...

All, Just wanted to provide people with a quick update on the BGP-Inspect project. The BGP-Inspect website (http://bgpinspect.merit.edu) provides people with an easy to use, fast, querable interface to a subset of the data collected at routeviews. Since the last update we have added 3 additional "views", i.e. peers whose data you can query individually. These new peers are: UUNET-MCI(157.130.10.233), Verio-CA(129.250.0.11) and France-Telecom-NYC(193.251.245.6). What this means is that we are extracting information for these 3 peers in addition to the 5 that we did previously. The website now hosts data going back to Aug 1 2005, and the database has grown to over 400GB. We continue to see a moderate amount of usage with people running queries on a continual basis. Roughly speaking queries from outside North America seem to outnumber queries from within(probably an artifact of the data the site provides). One question I had for the community is just how useful is it to provide live access to data going back upto a year. Has anyone actually used such historical data in the past? The original goal of the project was to house data for upto 6 months, we are now upto 13 months. If there is not much use for it perhaps we can age out data older than say 1 year? Router / Protocol Problem

I normally would not post to the group, but I am 100% stumped and have talked with peers with no luck. I have (2) Cisco 7204 Routers running BGP with 3 peers and HSRP. I am not doing anything special with BGP, pretty much a default config that has not changed in years. Recently with no changes to my network, I have been having problems connecting to certain websites and mail servers. I am always able to ping the sites and trace route without error. If I telnet to port 80 or port 25 it does not connect. If I login to my router and telnet sourcing my each of Internet Providers ports, I am able to get to the sites. I have talked with all the providers and none can find a problem. If I shut down one specific peer, everything works fine. So I keep thinking it was that peers problem some how. I have tested with just that peer up and I still can not connect. However, when talking with that peer, they are able to telnet from their network to the sites I can not reach. I don't know what else to check besides shutting down that peer. Which since it is under a 3 year contract, not an option. That isn't the real solution anyhow. Can anyone shed some light on or off-list? Thanks, Mike Walter

Can anyone shed some light on or off-list? Give your peer a /32 to install on their access router, verify that return path is via them and have them do connectivity tests to your problem sites. If that checks out you step by step through it. Feedback on providers who offer communities that restrict route propagation

Hi, I'm looking at a number of transit providers in Europe who offer communities that will limit the scope of an announcement by geographic region. For example if you are AS1 you can tell upstream AS2 to propagate your announcements only to peers and neighbors within EU, but not those in the NA or AP regions. This helps networks with unique routing policies. (If you're curious what these might be, just ping me offlist) I'm looking for feedback from people who have done this before. All advice, experiences (preferably with what upstream ASNs) is helpful. Our concerns are basically that this puts a management and engineering aspect of our network into someone else's hands to not mess up. I already know we deal with peers who leak routes, but my guess is that since this is a business relationship with the upstream network they are less likely to bork it up and hopefully manage it programatically. Wishful thinking or sound practice/service offered by high-quality carriers? My questions are thus: 1) I'd this to find out how reliable it is/was (were your routes ever leaked)? 2) How effective it is/was (did it accomplish your goals)? 3) Advice you might have for someone who is considering doing this? NZNOG 07 - Call for Participation and Papers The next conference of the New Zealand Network Operators' Group is to be held in Palmerston North, New Zealand between 31 January and 2 February 2007. Our host is Inspire.net and the venue is to be at Massey University's campus. NZNOG meetings provide opportunities for the exchange of technical information and discussion of issues relating to the operation and support of network services, with particular emphasis on New Zealand. The conference is low priced and has a strong technical focus with the aim and history of getting a strong turnout of technical personal from New Zealand Internet orientated companies. Conference Overview ------------------- NZNOG 2007 will consist of one day Special Interest Group ( SIG ) Meetings followed by two days of conference presentations. There will also be opportunity for more informal and small lightening talks. These are typically around five minutes long and are organised closer to the actual conference. Important Dates --------------- Call for Papers opens: 5 September 2006 Deadline for speaker submissions: 20 October 2006 Responses to speaker submissions: 27 October 2006 Draft program published: 1 November 2006 Final program published: 18 December 2006 NZNOG 2007 Conference: 31 January - 2 February 2007 SIG Meetings ------------ The first day of the conference is arranged as parallel tracks to cover subject material which is of interest to particular groups of attendees. Proposals are requested for workshops, tutorials and other appropriate special-interest meetings of interest to Network Operators. Topics which have been successful in the past, or have been requested for this year are: * Advanced BGP gubbins * IPV6 implementation * Service Provider wireless networking * VoIP * BIND and DNSSEC * MPLS and high performance IP backbone routing * Systems Administration. The program committee will consider proposals for tutorials in any of these or new areas. There is a single day of SIGs with up to five running concurrently. If you have an idea for a tutorial subject that is not listed, please feel free to submit it to us. Conference Presentations ------------------------ The main conference program for 2007 will be made up of two days with a single stream where possible. Presentations don't need to fit any particular fixed length and can be from 30 minutes to 3 hours in length. NZNOG conferences have traditionally spanned the entire operational spectrum, and then some. Proposals for conference presentations are invited for virtually any topic with a degree of relevance to the NZNOG community. Past years' talks have included the following: - Internet exchange operations - Global anycast networks and the building thereof - Peering, peering, and peering - Network security - 10GB ethernet operations - Advanced networks in NZ - Current Internet research in NZ - Wireless networking - QOS over carrier networks - Content distribution networks and media streaming If you are interested in submitting a talk please fill out the questions at then end of this document and email them to talks(a)nznog.org . Submission Guidelines --------------------- When considering a presentation or SIG, remember that the NZNOG audience is mainly comprised of technical network operators and engineers with a wide range of experience levels from beginners to multi-year experience. There is a strong orientation to offer core skills and basic knowledge in the SIGs and to address issues relevant to the day-to-day operations of ISPs and network operators in the conference sessions. The inclusion of a title, bio, topic, abstract, and slides with proposals is not compulsory but each will help us determine the quality of your proposal and increase the likelihood it will be accepted.
