It is indeed simple if you know what needs to be done and what is expected. Even in your case above you mislead people into thinking that one can "request the AS and a Subnet from ARIN". After setting up the various POCs (step #1), step #2 is getting an ORG. Step #3 is requesting the IP space and *not* the ASN. One can't get an ASN from ARIN *until* you have IP space. Once you are authorized by ARIN for the IP space, one has to pay ARIN (step #4). One can pay online via credit card, which for large organizations can sometimes be a problem. In addition, ARIN doesn't accept American Express. Therefore, step #4 might very well involve cutting a check and Fedex'ing it to ARIN and waiting till they process it. Step #5, which can be done in parallel to step #4 is getting the ARIN Registration Service Agreement signed by your legal department. Once again, depending on the size of your organization, this might take anywhere from 1-3 weeks. Step #6 is the ASN request. In order to do that one needs to submit a signed copy of the two contracts one has with their upstreams (to justify the ASN). Once again, these contracts might be buried in legal, need to be found and scanned and sent to ARIN before the ASN request can be processed. Step #7 is paying for the ASN either online or by check (see step #4 above). Those that stated the process to get IP and ASN from ARIN would be a week or so, might be referring to very small organizations (even there I am a bit skeptical). SC and PC Nominations, Charter Amendments, and Elections

In accordance with the NANOG Charter, we announce the 2006 NANOG Steering Committee nominations, Charter Amendments, and call for new Program Committee nominations. Many thanks to Merit Network for their impartial support and involvement with the NANOG community. The partnership we have developed enables transparent management and continued evolution of NANOG. On behalf of the SC, 2006 Steering Committee nominations will be accepted September 16 through October 1, 2006. To nominate an SC candidate, send the nominee's name and email address with a brief statement supporting the nomination to nanog-elections(a)nanog.org. Merit will confirm the nominee's acceptance and request a short bio from the candidate. Once complete, the list of candidates and their bios will be posted no later than Monday, October 2, 2006. The Steering Committee candidates will be given a brief opportunity to make comments and/or accept questions from the community at the NANOG 38 Community Meeting, Sunday, October 8, beginning at 6 PM, EST. In addition to Steering Committee elections, proposed revisions to the NANOG charter can be found at http://www.nanog.org/charter. Eligible voters may also propose additional charter amendments to nanog-elections(a)nanog.org by September 30, 2006. Submissions to include names and email addresses of petition signatories, which Merit may verify. Final recommendations for voting will be presented on the 2006 NANOG ballot. A quote from the DHS's recently released report about their Cyberstorm exercise in Feb: http://www.dhs.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/prep_cyberstormreport_sep06.pdf Finding 3: Correlation of Multiple Incidents between Public and Private Sectors. Correlation of multiple incidents across multiple infrastructures and between the public and private sectors remains a major challenge. The cyber incident response community was generally effective in addressing single threats/attacks, and to some extent multiple threats/attack. However, most incidents were treated as individual and discrete events. Players were challenged when attempting to develop an integrated situational awareness picture and cohesive impact assessment across sectors and attack vectors. And a question: Do network operators have something to learn from these DHS activities or do we have best practices that the DHS should be copying? --Michael Dillon
