Their lineage goes back to APL and the J language, both of which found most of their users in financial services. However, the general issue of time-series databases is more interesting. Google will take you to lots of research using keywords like: time-series database delta wavelet search indexing maxima Of course, don't use them all at once. To give you a flavor of the stuff that people have done, here is a slide presentation on compression and indexing that does not use averages like RRD does: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~eugene/research/talks/major-extrema.ppt In addition to Google, it is a good idea to search CiteSeer http://citeseer.ist.psu.edu/ because it allows you to quickly track down references to other papers so you can read them all as a set. I don't think there are any full-blown open-source implementations that you could integrate into your own systems. There is stuff like Metakit http://www.equi4.com/metakit.html which stores data by column rather than by row. And people who have thought about how to efficiently store time-series probably cobbled together their own systems using bsddb or HDF5. comcast spam policies

I will not ask if anyone at Comcast has a clue, because I do not need any dvds. If this not correct, I would appreciate hearing from anyone whose clue-ness exceeds 15%. The rest is a description/rant about comcast's policy as described to me by a couple of tech people reached by following voice mail from 1-800-comcast which really should be 1-800-328-7448. The current comcast policy seems to be to backhole mail servers at random. Safeport's internal mail server which is the source of no spam (cause only we guys can use it) was blackholed either at random, or because we sent one email to a comcast customer. As if that is not bad enough only comcast customers can complain. The link given on the bounce email: http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=SecurityMail_Policy18627 A pattern can apparently be discerned from a single email. The comcast guys at better at pattern recognition than most of us. Unlike AOL there is no person that can be mailed or contacted. Neither the link on the above page or blacklist_comcastnet(a)cable.comcast.com will respond except to (they claim) complains from individual customers. I guess the message is you better use gmail if you are a comcast customer. I really don't mean this to start an endless thread. On the off chance that there is someone who can and will explain the logic behind this policy and or perhaps do something about it, that would be useful. No DNS operations BOF at NANOG39

Unfortunately due to not enough potential speakers, and pressure on BOF slots in the program, we have decided to not have this BOF this time around. My apologies for this - a number of potential speakers indicated they were preparing relevant work which would be more ready to present next time around, so hopefully at NANOG40.. bear with me, this appears to be about DNS but it's actually about e-mail. maps.vix.com has been gone since 1999 or so. mail-abuse.org is the new thing. i've tried just about everything to get traffic toward the old domain name to stop... right now there's a DNAME but it made no real difference. i've taken the maps.vix.com domain away. i've set its NS to "localhost". i've put long TTL's on both good and bad data. the traffic continues. clearly this is my pennance for starting MAPS, and i hear you giggling about it, but i need some advice. once upon a time, someone more insane than myself wanted to close an RBL and did so by replacing it with a wildcard entry. we all hated that since it caused a lot of mail to bounce. (all mail that would otherwise have been received by that RBL's subscribers, in fact.) it did however have the effect of causing the subscribers to reconfigure their mailers to stop querying the now-dead RBL in question. what's the current thinking on this? oh and even though this isn't about bgp i can put some numbers in so that it will seem on-topic. out of 100K DNS queries received by a vix.com nameserver (which is about five minutes worth), here are the toptalkers for maps.vix.com.
