The apparently misconfigured domains are served by a single registrar, estdomains.com. (whois -h whois.estdomains.com ..., Registration Service Provided By: N/A, Contact: +876.784848888). Certainly smells like a rat. Most of the individual nameservers do not answer queries, the ones that do are open to recursion, and all are hosted in cable/dsl/dial-up address space with correspondingly rfc-illegal reverse zones. Running 'host -at ns' a few times shows the list of nameservers is rotated every few seconds, and occasionally returns "server localhost". Obviously a rat, but the pattern brings up a number of questions. Are these spoofed queries and replies? If not, have any root nameservers been hacked? Do the queries exploit known named vulnerabilities? What ICANN policy might address this? Any folks interested in improving the quality and formats available for the webcast of meetings? What is the best way to fund such an effort - a specific fundraising drive, additional sponsor slot, ping the community for donations, etc? The streams for RIPE, UKNOF, & LINX seem to be of high quality, I'm told they typically use 3 chip DV cameras. Originally I was frustrating by the lack of available formats that merit/I2 make available; RealMedia has been taking a slow death in the mainstream space for some time, with H264 & WMV9 being the popular kids on the block these days (or FLV to be web 2.0 compliant). Regardless, I think we can all appreciate the efforts that is put into archiving both the slides and video presentations, thanks merit & i2! Supporting additional formats is easy (ie: cluster of mini's, mencoder/ffmpeg one-liners, etc), improving the original source appears to be problem w/ the current setup. Just as Anton Kapela has stepped up to vastly improve the WiFi at meetings, I'd like to help improve the webcasts. Unfortuantly, while tkap was presented with quality WiFi gear (cisco enterprise non- linksys), the existing video setup is not so modern. An investment of ~$10k would yield a number of 2nd hand DV cameras, firewire repeaters, a few macbooks and associated accessories. Also using wirecast <http://www.varasoftware.com/products/wirecast/> w/ their "Desktop Presenter" add-on would vastly improve the current VGA to long-run-ole-Svideo setup; another trick of the LINX streams - this would require some speaker coordination though. I'll be @ NOG40 and would be more then happy to discuss in more detail. --Matt Peterson

BGP announce/withdrawal history.

Earlier today I had an issue where a circuit to one of my two BGP connected upstreams went away for an hour or so. During this period, I expected BGP to act as expected and migrate the traffic to the second circuit with a second provider. This did not occur. Initially I figured this had to do with route flap amplification or similar causing route dampening. However, when the circuit came back up connectivity was almost immediately restored to the entire internet, which doesn't seem consistant with a route flap dampening, unless the timing was just coincidental. This leads me to believe that the routes may have not been withdrawn for the path through the second provider even though the circuit was down for ~90 minutes. How this would have occured I have no idea. At this point, I'm trying to reconstruct the state of the global routing table in relation to my prefixes during this period. I seem to recall at least historically that there was at least one or two places which were capturing route announcement/withdrawl data on the internet. However, google fails me. Is this data currently being captured anywhere, and if so, is this data publically available (or at least are the data "owners" willing to provide an extract for my prefixes)? Any pointers would be helpful. Thanks.
