The US ISPs have been advertising "unlimited" service, but heavily oversubscribe to limit costs. The expectation is that users will only use the bandwidth rarely and in short bursts. We all know all about over subscription, but it is now problematic due to distributed applications. Blocking heavy users (or terminating them, as at least one cellular/wireless Internet service provider does to heavy users of its "unlimited" service) is false advertising. but it seems to be accepted all around, without so much as an asterisk and footnote. So it all comes down to what the definition of "unlimited" is. Truth in advertising and all that. There seems to be a great unwillingness to tell the truth in our society.

Perception,, Let look at this datapoint.. Some Linux distributions are distributed via p2p now..I am sure other people/companies use the same distribution method. Based on that I am sure that traffic accounts for more then 1% of p2p traffic in general.. As far as bandwith, lets be totally realistic, Comcast is ultimately the controller of everything in and out of their network infrastructure right? Well um they control it.. so I think its stooped to block anything ,, I am all for letting people have what they pay for.. But... if comcast is going to be draconian about this,, then.. well if u don't like it go somewhere else.. Although I do hope that this does not become an alarming trend.. Bottom line is, if it eats up bandwidth well cap the client/customer who may be offending.. or if that individual cannot exceed the allotted bandwidth, then I don't see the problem.. Has anyone (any lawyers here on the list?) investigated the legality of this action? With the FCC eliminating common carriage limits on ISPs, it seems that blocking traffic to/from particular IP addresses, etc., is acceptable. But from this description of Comcast's activities, it appears that they are using active measures to interfere with their customers' actions (fooling their customers' equipment into believing the machines at the other end have terminated the interactions). Could not this be construed as violating DMCA and a dozen other laws that have been invoked against malicious hackers? Worse on private trackers, likely that this is because of the smaller swarm size Although BitTorrent protocol encryption seems to work against most forms of traffic shaping, it doesn't help in this specific case. Comcast is making no effort to determine if the traffic they are blocking is legal or not. No one blocks all web traffic because some sites have illegal content or questionable/undesired material. vince, thanks for your presentation on 240/4. i agree with it all. two points do not hard-code address boundaries and special addresses, as we are likely to regret doing so. two sub-lessons, ula and any other bright ideas. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." -- George Santayana my first thought on how to use it revolved around the idea that the devices inside my site are more diverse than those on the transit internet. therefore, if i can use 240/4 internally, certainly we will all be able to transit it. where this died was the realization that, if i want to transit 240/4, i am expecting all the devices in *your* network to be able to handle 240/4, which is not reasonable. so i guess i come down on the private use side of the how-to-use decision. i would be interested in hearing counter-arguments. again, thanks for the preso and the work. and i presume my ciscos will soon be able to handle 240/4 at no additional hardware cost. :) randy

Level3 in cleveland/ohio?

Anyone else having major difficulty with service with ICG/Level3 circuits in Ohio/Cleveland? We've had a circuit down for 10 hours and just two hours ago they notified us that they're having a major outage in our region and have not provided __any__ further information. TIA, -Drew

What ever happened to pushing on the traditional class A owners to free up their address space? I can't help but think that the issue has always been mis management of the early assigned address blocks. Look at Nortel's block for instance... How many addresses are actually reachable directly from the internet? /22 subnets as a standard block with 100 addresses assigned.... They MAY have had an argument 8 years ago when they had 120K employees, but at 25K now, its a bit ridiculous. Hundreds of addresses per employee? How many other blocks are unallocated?
