One of my primary concerns has been, unsuccessfully, engaging the networking community. Why is that? This "issue" is not imagined, nor is it a scare tactic -- it has, for lack of a better analogy, grown in proportions only proportional to the lack of engagement from ISPs. ISPs have really, really been absent from the discussion, for various reasons. Is this a topic that the NANOG community would like to discuss in a serious manner? I'm just curious, because I'm considering submitting a "lightning talk" at the upcoming San Jose NANOG, just to gauge & present some of the major issues that we are seeing that could really use your assistance. Understanding the behavior of such networks often requires the ability to discover temporal connections among the events in a large data set. One challenge is that the volume of data makes it difficult to explore the data and organize the events into a narrative sequence. This dissertation contributes new interactive visualization techniques for analyzing, organizing, and presenting network event data at multiple levels of detail for the purpose of forensic analysis - tracking down causal sequences of importance. The first contribution is a technique that supports event analysis, called progressive multiples. Our techniques are instantiated in a system for network incident investigation, Isis, which we validated with a long-term collaboration and deployment with the principal network analyst of the EE and CS departments. The second contribution is a technique for automatically generating flow maps, which present summaries of network topology and behavior at a higher level than event plots and timelines. Our technique has been adopted by a diverse group of users to depict the flow of computer networks, documents, and international ecological trade. ************************************************************** Doantam Phan has recently completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Stanford University. NANOG 42 Peering BOF XVII and APRICOT 2008 Peering Forum

Hi all - In about a month (starting Feb 17 specifically) there will be two back-to-back events specifically for network engineers and peering coordinators; at NANOG 42, Feb 19, we will have the 17th Peering BOF (http://www.nanog.org/mtg-0802/agenda.html) and the following week, at APRICOT 2008, Feb 25-26 there will be an AP Peering Forum (http://www.apricot2008.net/P09.html#t1) held in Taipei, Taiwan. I need volunteer speakers and topics for both of these, and if you are a network operations person, I bet you might have a story to share with the group ! I'm looking for stories of interest to the peering community, such as: What processes did you use to transition an upgrade to your network? What worked well and what did not? What did you wish you knew when you built into and throughout different regions or countries? How did you select these locations (transport, transit, peering costs? attractive market? customers?) What was unexpected, or what lessons learned would you share with folks who would walk in your footprints? Microsoft's Black Tuesday bandwidth impact?

Every month I look at my upstream bandwidth graphs and I see no blip in the hours before 3 am on Microsoft's Black Tuesday. I would think that with the thousands of PCs out on our network downloading updates around that time that I would see *something*. I know every Black Tuesday I see my three PC's blinking a logon screen. Are MSFT's monthly updates really a non-event in regards to internet bandwidth? Frank

It's funny that you ask. The organization I am working with that spawned this question in the first place has /22 dhcp pools at multiple sites-- for both VoIP and workstations. "For future growth..." they said. Why the decision was made not to scale with additional VLANs at a later date is beyond me(or my pay-grade). They thought it was preposterous that I suggested that there are a lot of providers/networks that exclude .0 and .255 host addresses from DHCP pools/etc, and do not use them as a matter of convention/best practice. I casually suggested this fact and was subsequently chided. The reason I posed this question in the first place, is that in my experience, most organizations I have worked with do not use them. It appears from the thread that there are some legitimate concerns with using .0 and .255 hosts, even though many consider these concerns dated or legacy. Thanks to everyone for their opinions.
