There might be several hundred people you would see using 171.71.241.89; One of the big issues with the Tsinghua SAVA proposal in the IETF is specifically the confusion of the application layer with the IP layer. They propose to embed personal identity into the IP address, and in that there are a number of issues. Internet Address != application layer identification. What we can do with IP addresses is conclude that the user of the machine with an address is likely to be one of its usual users. We can't say that with 100% certainty, because there are any number of ways people can get "unusual" access. But even so, if one can show a pattern of usage, the usual suspects can probably figure out which of them, or what other "unusual" user, might have done this or that. That is the model forensic analysts follow. And the address is personal information to the extent that it limits the set of usual suspects to a set that includes you or I.

IPv6 Hour at NANOG 42

Hello everyone, We are planning to hold an IPv6 testing and documentation hour during the NANOG 42 meeting next month in San Jose. During this hour, the conference wireless and wired networks will have only IPv6 connectivity available during some phases of the work. Recognising that some members of our community have to be on net and available 24x7, there will be a small corner of the NANOG network which will have IPv4 support. The goal of the IPv6 hour will be educational, experimental, and documentary for our community. We are not trying to do damage, politics, or marketing. It is very likely we will all have to live with IPv6, and getting common clue about it is part of the NANOG mission. We are trying/hoping to show what works and what does not, and how to work around some of the bits that do not work. We also hope that attendees at NANOG 42 will join with us in this exercise and contribute to the wiki at http://www.civil-tongue.net/clusterf/. (To contribute to the wiki, please create a login, then open a ticket addressed to admin, and wait for a return message indicating editorial rights have been created.) Comparing Bandwidth Economies

Hi, For the purposes of building an argument *for* increased peering within NZ, I need to compare domestic bandwidth costs between the US and NZ. My apologies now if this is considered OT. Hopefully you'll accommodate my request. It's fairly straight forward. Basically all I need to know is the price of 10/100/1000Mbps of ethernet/POS (probably not IP transit) service etc for a link span of either 400 Miles or 800 Miles (say between 2 major cities), ideally in states that have a average population density of roughly around 42 per sq mile. Which basically means I'd be keen to hear from folks in Oregon, Maine, Colorado, Arizona or possibly Kansas (happy to hear from others). I realise that neither of those states span the distance I'm talking about, but close enough is good enough. Portland to San Francisco costs for 10/100/1000Mbps ethernet service would be very interesting. Thanks for your time. Jamie

Comcast discarding email with shortened URLs?

I just got a report that comcast is simply discarding all email containing URLs shortened with our easyURL shortening service (easyURL[dot]net). No bounce, no refusal to accept, just accepting and then discarding. Anybody else confirm this with other URL shortening services or are we just the lucky ones? Cox clamping VPN traffic?

I've got a local peer with Cox for VPN users to co-lo. A VPN connection that otherwise shows no issues just had their file transfer rate during a large file transfer over the VPN go from 10Mbps to 43kbps, and stay there. This isn't transit, it's local peering. The local Cox guys don't see anything wrong. Other users can access the same server over their VPN with no problems, and the end user has no issues transferring large files from other sites. Looks to me like the P2P bandwidth clamping "solution" gone bad. Anyone have any insights into what Cox are up to? P.S. The Cox customer using the VPN has a Cox Business Services link, not a home cable modem.
