Prefix filtering for Cisco SUP2

I am hoping to help an ISP keep a couple of Cisco 6500's with SUP2's in production for a while longer. They are currently just about at the FIB limit of 250,000 entries, mostly composed of BGP routes. I'm considering two alternatives to reduce the number of entries. 1. Accept only default and partial routes from upstream. a. Accept directly-connected routes, reject everything else and rely on the default route. b. Assume a reduction to about 30,000 unique routes per upstream ISP (currently 3). 2. Accept only default and RIR minimum routes from upstream. a. Filter based on RIR minimums, rely on default for unaggregated routes. b. Assume a reduction of about 50,000-100,000 total routes. Does anyone have any opinions as to whether one option is better than the other? Are there options that would be better than either of these? Are there serious risks to either option? My sense is that either of these would be a fairly benign change, only having a marginal impact on routing efficiency in either case. It seems like the better option is the one that retains the greater number of routes within some margin of safety. What do you think?

for those interested in the matter tom Dear Colleagues, As you may be aware from recent news reports, traffic to the youtube.com website was 'hijacked' on a global scale on Sunday, 24 February 2008. The incident was a result of the unauthorised announcement of the prefix 208.65.153.0/24 and caused the popular video sharing website to become unreachable from most, if not all, of the Internet. The RIPE NCC conducted an analysis into how this incident was seen and tracked by the RIPE NCC's Routing Information Service (RIS) and has published a case study at: http://www.ripe.net/news/study-youtube-hijacking.html The RIPE NCC RIS is a service that collects Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing information from roughly 600 peers at 16 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across the world. Data is stored in near real-time and can be instantly queried by anyone to provide multiple views of routing activity for any point in time. The RIS forms part of the RIPE NCC's suite of Information Services, which together provide a deeper insight into the workings of the Internet. The RIPE NCC is a neutral and impartial organisation, and commercial interests therefore do not influence the data collected. The RIPE NCC Information Services suite also includes the Test Traffic Measurement (TTM) service, the DNS Monitoring (DNSMON) service and Hostcount. All of these services are available to anyone, and most of them are offered free of charge. Rod, I used the term "clueless" in that message because of the number of times this concept has been discussed before primarily by business types who do not understand how the "Internet" works. In the large and small businesses that I have been in and with the ISPs and service providers (SP) I have worked for, addresses have usually been allocated sub-optimally. The free space is usually scattered across the allocation and the prefix for it is to small to announce. If this is a medium to large size company the ISP or interconnect provider would aggregate all of the routes for their own annoucements to tier 1 and 2 providers. IMHO ISPs and SPs could share space among their customers since they can then aggregate to an acceptable level to announce to the Internet but I do not see this as a "market". I not only embrace market mechanism, but with some of my colleagues on this list, was developing a bandwidth trading market while at EBS. IMHO the amount of technical effort to extract these final v4 addresses is more work and cost then transitioning to v6. All major router and switch vendors have been v6 capable / ready for two years and most tier 1 carriers support v6 traffic today. ARIN (and other RIRs) and the rules of use of IP address were specifically setup to allow global communications around the world with a large number of entities on an equal basis. IPv4would be afixedsize pool of acommodity and from my training at Enron in trading (they were the largest in the world by number and volume of trades) it only works under several rules. You have a group of suppliers and consumers, you have a measurable commodity and a standard way of measuring it, you have a standard set of commodities, you can assign a value to the commodity etc. If I grow corn or drill for "Texas Light Crude" there standards in place so that if you drill in the Middle east, China or Russia you produce the same "Texas Light Crude" to trade. Trading of IP address does violate ARIN rules as ARIN has explained to me since to "Trade" something is to have title or ownership of that item and that ownership belongs to the cognizant RIR not to a company or person. Now for those who could not follow the last paragraph, the analogy is when you were young and renting your apartment or house and you wanted to make money selling one of the rooms of your rented apartment or house. I found this section of a Telephony Online article interesting: Though networking trends point toward an evolution to mesh networks, nationwide carrier networks currently lack the physical diversity that would help carriers realize the benefits of true mesh networking, Poll said. Qwest, for example, has about three or four cross-country arteries that correspond to railway rights of way. Replacing that with a more mesh-like architecture would increase the complexity of operating the network. For one thing, it would require more uniformity in the capacities of various network routes. "You'd have to have units of 10 Gb/s traffic between all points on the network before this becomes economically viable," Poll said. "When you place IP capacity, you have to place a lot of standby capacity to carry traffic along different paths. If we could get greater physical diversity in place, we could greatly diminish the amount of standby capacity we have to take." Hello Everyone, It's been a while since I posted on this topic, and unfortunately I'm still having trouble with Yahoo deferrals. The links that were provided in this post worked, but after the forms were received by what I *think* is a human I still got a canned reply. I've tried replying with specific details about our problem, but is either answered with another generic reply or not at all. We are running Imall, and each domain has it's own IP address. Queue Timer and Tries before returning to sender are set to 30 minutes / 5 attempts. According to yahoo they do want you to attempt to resend if you get a 421 error. SPF is also set on a per-domain basis. I'm not sure what else to try. Does anyone have a better understanding of how Yahoo greylisting works? Thanks in advance! Justin Wilson
