What software solution do people use for inventory management for things like riser/conduit drawdown, fiber inventory, physical topology store, CLR/DLR, x-connect, contracts, port inventory, etc. Any experiences in integrating workflow into those packages for work orders, modeling, drawdown levels, etc. /vijay

Get off the grid, sell back some power to the grid, reduce your costs for power, especially peak rate power, and be able to brag about having your own nuke plant. Creating demand for IPv6, and saving the planet

A number of people have bemoaned the lack of any IPv6-only killer-content that would drive a demand for IPv6. I've thought about this, and about the government's push to make IPv6 a reality. What occurred to me is there is a satellite sitting in storage that would provide such content: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triana_(satellite) Al Gore pushed for this satellite, Triana, to provide those on earth with a view of the planet among its scientific goals. The Republicans referred to it as an "overpriced screen saver," though the effect even of just the camera component on people's lives and how they treat the planet could be considerable. By combining the launch of Triana with feeding the still images and video from servers only connected to native IPv6 bandwidth, the government would provide both a strong incentive for end users to want to move to IPv6, and a way to get the people of this planet to stop from time to time and ponder the future of the earth. Of course getting this done any time soon would require getting the present administration to reverse its bias against Triana and global warming. But it seemed to me an interesting way to advance two goals in synergy. Level3 not honoring Broadwing contracts?

In 2006, I signed a 3 year contract with Broadwing for a 1 cabinet colocation with 6Mbs dedicated for under $1,000/mo. A few weeks ago, about halfway through this contract, I get a letter from Level 3's "Director of Colocation" that they are going to raise my price by several hundred dollars a month. I spoke with my new Level 3 rep, and he just notified me that their legal deparment confirms that all they have to do is give me 30 days notice to increase their price. This does not make sense to me. I am bound to a 3 year contract, where I have to pay them the rest of the term if I were to leave early, but they can jack up the price by 40-50% during that time, arbitrarily? I do not see that provision in my contract, and would rather avoid legal expenses if possible. Has anyone else had to deal with this sort of thing from Level 3? Postmaster @ vtext.com (or what are best practice to send SMS these days)

We've noticed that 1234567890(a)vtext.com is no longer a very reliable form of delivery for alerts from Nagios, et al. It seems as our volume of alerts has risen, our delivery rate has dropped precipitously. We don't expect much trying to actually reach a postmaster for vtext.com so I thought the better question would be to ask what the current best practice is to get SMS alerts out? Back in the day, I remember a company I worked for had something called a TAP gateway. Is that still a good route? I've also been told to check out an SMS gateway/api service called clickatell.com -- anyone using them to delivering timely notifications? Is the best thing to do to try and get a programmable cellphone in a datacenter? What else are operators doing to get the pages out when things go wonky? -David

10GE router resource

Hi everybody! I find myself in the market for some 10GE routers. As I don't buy these everyday, I was wondering if any of you guys had any good resources for evaluating different vendors and models. I'm mainly thinking about non-vendor resources as the vendorspeak sites are not that hard to find. Also I'd love to hear recommendatios for "budget" 10GE routers. hello i have a question : " IF we would use multicast" streaming ONLY, for appropriet content , would `nt this " decrease " the overall internet traffic ? This is just a quick note to let people know that another list archive is now available. The company I work for, MarkLogic, sells a server that combines XML database, search engine, and app server capabilities in a single platform. As a demonstration of what can be done with our server, some of our people have created MarkMail (http://www.markmail.org/) to archive public mailing lists. So far, over 2000 lists containing over 11M emails have been loaded. I've been a lurker here from back when I worked at RouteScience, and thought it'd be useful to get nanog added in to our system. As of today, thanks to some help from Sue Joiner, nanog archives going back to April '94 have been loaded and we're subscribed to the list going forward. The archive is available at http://nanog.markmail.org/ This is a free service with no advertising. Our intent is just to provide a useful application with the goal of getting people to say "Hey, I want one of those!" I'll leave it at that to not run afoul of the AUP with respect to marketing.
