NSFNET T1 backbone routing configuration changes

Hi. The T1 backbone routing software allows up to 1200 routes to be configured at any metric per NSS. We reached this limit a while back at several sites. With the May 12 update, we made the following adjustments to the T1 backbone routing database in order to stay within the 1200 route per unique metric per NSS limit and to provide future space: NSS 8 moved 745 nets with AS 756 (T1-T3 Network Interconnect (Princeton, NJ) metric 11 to metric 17. NSS 9 moved 558 nets with AS 184 (Milnet (FIX-East)) metric 1 & 2, to AS 184 metric 7 & 8. NSS 10 moved 208 nets with AS 590 (EASInet Regional Network) metric 1 to metric 7. NSS 13 moved 558 nets with AS 164 (Milnet (FIX-West)) metric 1 & 2, to AS 164 metric 7 & 8. NSS 17 moved 745 nets with AS 750 (T1-T3 Network Interconnect (Ann Arbor, MI)) metric 10 to metric 16. While these changes are transparent to backbone routing, it was brought to our attention that they may affect sites which use the nis.nsf.net reports to generate access lists, etc. So, we will keep this list informed as these reconfigurations become necessary in the future. =========================================================================== CA-92:13 CERT Advisory June 4, 1992 SunOS NIS Vulnerability --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Computer Emergency Response Team/Coordination Center (CERT/CC) has received information concerning several vulnerabilities with NIS under Sun Microsystems, Inc. SunOS. These vulnerabilities exist in NIS under SunOS 4.1, 4.1.1, and 4.1.2, and may or may not exist in earlier versions of NIS. Sun has provided fixes for SunOS 4.1, 4.1.1, and 4.1.2 for these vulnerabilities. The patch file containing these fixes is available through your local Sun Answer Center and through anonymous ftp from ftp.uu.net (137.39.1.9) in the /systems/sun/sun-dist directory. Note that these fixes will probably not be compatible with SunOS 4.0.3 and earlier versions of the operating system. Description A security vulnerability exists under NIS allowing unauthorized access to NIS information. II. Impact A user on a remote host can obtain copies of the NIS maps from a system running NIS. The remote user can attempt to guess passwords for the system using the obtained NIS password map information. III. Solution A. Obtain and install the patch from Sun or from ftp.uu.net following the instructions provided in the "README" file. 1. Sprint/Cornell ICMnet Transition Report

Sprint/Cornell ICMnet Transition Progress report SPRINTLINK: Sprint and Cornell University are proceding forward with the transition of NOC duties from Ithaca to Sprint's SprintLink NOC in Herndon, VA. A key element in the transition has been the establishment of a fully functional SprintLink national backbone. The backbone is now connected to the CIX; and it is connected to FIX-E via Sprint "ICMNET2." It will also soon be connected to FIX-W via Sprint ICMNET3. The routing within this complex arrangement could not have been accomplished without the help of Mr. Peter Lothberg, SWIPnet/NORDUnet, who assured end-to- end routing integrity from NSFNET and SprintLink's CIX connection to the Sprint EBS1 router in Stockholm where the connection to EBONE is made. NSFNET-EBONE: 768 kbps service (ICMNET2) is now operational between FIX-E and Stockholm. It utilizes a path which bypasses an outage-prone PTT facility in the Netherlands. The 256 kbps service (ICMNET1) between Ithaca and Stockholm is in the process of being taken down. We expect this coordinated effort between Sprint and SWIPnet/NORDUnet to be accomplished in early July. NSFNET-JIX On Friday, June 5, the ICMnet link (ICMNET3) from the Japanese Internet eXchange (JIX) in Tokyo to the Sprint ICMnet router at FIX-W will be transitioned to Sprint NOC management. This effort has been coordinated with NACSIS. NSFNET-INRIA: In conjunction with INRIA, we are planning to transition the 128 kbps Cornell- Sophia-Antipolis, France service (ICMNET1) within the month. NSFNET-LATIN AMERICA AND CARRIBBEAN When the transition of Cornell-homed circuits is completed the Sprint ICMnet equipment (router, channel bank, etc) at Cornell will be relocated to the Pan Amsat VSAT earth station in Homestead, Florida for the purpose of providing NSFNET connectivity to the Latin American and Carribbean community as discussed at the First Interamerican Networking Workshop held October 7-11 in Rio de Janeiro. Please avoid EGP & BGP backbone peering from the same AS...

Hi. Some NSFNET sites are configured to run both EGP and BGP sessions with the NSFNET from the same AS at the same time. Please avoid this practice and run only one or the other until further notice. We have discovered lost routes and black holing of traffic on the T3 backbone under such a configuration. An excerpt from Curtis Villamizar <curtis(a)ans.net>: >Subject: mixing BGP and EGP at the same metric > >The problem arises when there is an EGP route and one or more >alternate routes with equal policy metric (either EGP or BGP) and the >EGP route is favored. If the favored EGP route is lost and an >alternate BGP route with the same metric exists, the alternate BGP >route will always be advertised to the IBGP neighbors. =========================================================================== CA-92:12 CERT Advisory May 28, 1992 Revised Patch for SunOS /usr/etc/rpc.mountd Vulnerability --------------------------------------------------------------------------- *** THIS IS A REVISED CERT ADVISORY *** *** IT CONTAINS NEW VULNERABILITY AND PATCH INFORMATION *** *** SUPERSEDES CERT ADVISORY CA-91:09 *** The Computer Emergency Response Team/Coordination Center (CERT/CC) has received information concerning the availability of a revised security patch for /usr/etc/rpc.mountd in Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation operating systems. This patch fixes an additional vulnerability that was not addressed in CERT advisory CA-91:09.SunOS.rpc.mountd.vulnerability. Sun has provided patches for SunOS 4.1, SunOS 4.1_PSR_A, SunOS 4.1.1, and SunOS 4.1.2. These patches are available through your local Sun Answer Center as well as through anonymous ftp from ftp.uu.net (137.39.1.9) in the /systems/sun/sun-dist directory. Description Under certain conditions an exported NFS filesystem can be mounted by any system on the Internet even though it may appear that access to the filesystem is restricted to specific hosts. II. Impact Unauthorized remote hosts will be able to mount the exported filesystem. III. Solution As root: 1. Move the existing rpc.mountd aside and change the permissions. # mv /usr/etc/rpc.mountd /usr/etc/rpc.mountd.OLD # chmod 400 /usr/etc/rpc.mountd.OLD 2. Install the new version # cp `arch`/rpc.mountd /usr/etc # chown root.staff /usr/etc/rpc.mountd # chmod 755 /usr/etc/rpc.mountd 3. Kill the currently running rpc.mountd and restart it, or reboot the system.
