Home AS values in the PRDB -- update

Hi. As you all know, the concept of Home AS is central to the expression of AS policies in RIPE-181 and the Global Routing Registry. The NSFNET Policy Routing Database (PRDB) has been collecting Home AS values for a year now, though those values have not been required for AS690 routing. As part of the transition from the to the Routing Arbiter Database and the Global Routing Registry (RADB/GRR), we are in the process of updating the database Home AS information. There are three steps to the plan to update this information: 1) On November 1st, some missing Home AS values were filled in from AS-path information from BGP sessions with origin "IGP". (RIPE database values were also used to update Home AS values for European nets in the PRDB). A report on Home AS (and related) values before this was done is contained in the file nic.merit.edu:nsfnet/announced.networks/home_as.Nov_1_1994 . This operation updated 1592 Home As values, and corrected the Home AS values for 365 European nets. Unfortunately, it still left PRDB 7,227 nets without Home As values. 2) Between now and November 25, we encourage all NSPs to determine the Home ASs for nets that they originate or route, and to send that information to nsfnet-admin(a)merit.edu. (Just send net lists and ASs; don't bother with NACRs for this process). 3) On November 25, we will update any remaining missing Home AS values using the following algorithm for each net: - If BGP paths have origin "IGP" and show only a single value for the end (Home) AS, use that AS. - Else if BGP paths have origin "IGP" and show multiple values for the end (Home) AS, use one of those ASs. - Else if BGP paths have origin "EGP", use that AS. - Else if BGP paths have origin "INCOMPLETE", use that AS. - Else use the primary announcing AS from the AS690 Metric:AS list. The "AS" column shows the AS that the algorithm will choose if the net is not otherwise updated by November 25. The "Src" column shows the reason for that value: "now" means there is a current PRDB Home AS value, "EPG", "INC", and "PRI" indicate that an AS path "EGP" or "Incomplete" value would be used, or that the Primary announcing AS would be used. The "(IGP)" column show were AS path "IGP" values show a different Home AS than the one registered in the PRDB. "MULT" in this column indicates that our BGP dump showed multiple AS paths were specifying different IGP ASs were concurrently being announced for this net. A more complete explantion of the columns is indcluded at the head of the report file. The report format is designed for easy grep'ing: grep for ' 237 ' to find all nets relevant to AS237, or for ' :237 ' to find all nets with AS237 somewhere in the Metric:AS list. --Dale Johnson

Also, please also do not confuse Vadim's individual opinion with the opinion of Sprint. Sprint also recognizes the cost-benefits of a fast packet service versus point-to-point circuits. One of the primary reasons we pursued an ATM strategy in advance of many others was due to the cost-benefits in our backbone...There are a litany of other reasons which I would be happy to pontificate...Pushpendra, no criticism intended, but I would probably argue that our stockholders do not consider the cost of additional network capacity as "funny-money".... Internet testing

We are ready to perform end-to-end performance testing across the new NSF architecture. PSC has a whole battery of TCP and IP diagnostics available from a test network, which can be exercised without exposing any production users to untested infrastructure. The network psc-hs-test (192.88.115), containing only the host voyager-115.psc.edu (192.88.115.29) is being announced to ANSnet (AS690), and from ANSnet to all peers at the NAPs. It is not announced by ANSnet to any other interconnects or providers. We encourage all providers to accept this route via the NAPs as soon as possible. If an RSP announces a test network to their new NSP, and also has the route announced across the NAPs, we can establish end-to-end connectivity through the new infrastructure. We are in a position to exercise such a path at loads beyond those attainable by most users. Depending on the target host available at the RSP, we can run large window TCP, mping or Jamshid's instrumented traceroute. We do need to be careful about maximum load because some of the segments are carrying production traffic. Since TCP "does the right thing" in the presence of congestion, TCP tests can be run at what ever bandwidth the network will support. We will limit IP performance tests to avoid sustained or high packet loss. I can not stress how important it is to do these tests as early as possible. We first used psc-hs-test in January of 1991, to maul the then brand new T3 NSFnet. We persisted in demonstrating that it didn't work, and Merit/ANS persisted in fixing it. At that time we had the undivided attention of the developers and they were able to do prime-time backbone software reloads and hardware upgrades. Once we agreed that it was working (it took about a month), we have never had problems with it. By hindsight, this saved us from all of the anguish suffered by NEARnet and others when they migrated to infrastructure which was beyond the capability of available diagnostic tools. Please test the path to voyager-115.psc.edu, and please let us help you meet the needs of your customers. PSC will be much happier to do gratis testing before any traffic cutover, than to address user complaints about infrastructure which is already in production. There is an issue of acceptance criteria: We are not parties to the provider contracts, and are not in a position to tell providers what they should deliver to their customers. Furthermore, it is known that much of the technology is being pushed into service faster than comfortable. None the less, we believe that there are some minimal requirements that should be met in all parts of the R&E Internet, if not the entire Internet. Required on day one (Note the vague words): - Mostly not congested. - Low loss when not congested. - Sufficient queuing to smooth some of the inherent burstyness. - Sane congested behavior at likely choke points. Sane means that actual IP throughput should be constant or at worst fall gently with load rising beyond the onset of congestion. It is my belief that there are a substantial number of users who will complain bitterly if the Internet fails to meet these "requirements". Note that these requirements are not sufficient to assure stable TCP operation. In the longer term, additional things are need: full D*B queues at all choke points and a strategic packet drop policy, such as RED, for early congestion notification. Also router implementations that can not do LSRR (source route) and ICMP at full rate greatly complicate sectionalizing problems on long paths. When the routers implement the entire protocol at full speed, it is trivial to localize performance problems to within one hop. However, in most commercial routers the less used parts of the protocol take a different, longer code path, which is almost always far more congested and lossy than any problematic primary path. A workaround is to install fast workstations near key interconnects. The workstations can be used as diagnostic probes/targets to test long paths section by section. --MM--

So, from the point of view of a user purchasing something carriers offer ATM may make sense (if carrier does not offer native IP) -- but from the point of view of a carrier ATM does not look that attractive. You still have to run IP over ATM (there's no such thing as native ATM applications yet), and the extra level of encapsulation does not bring anything worth 30% of bandwidth. fyi, the bilateral agreement found in the sprint nap handbook is 90% materially what PSI and SPRINT have worked on together for a bilateral. (it would be nice if sprint had given us a bit of citation there). This is the second bilateral example that psi has worked on with others. Since bilaterals are EXPLICITLY part of the NAP model, it would be nice to see some other agreements posted for reference purposes, or is this going to be confidential/proprietary matters? marty

Souped up version of traceroute...

All, In response to my query before the last nanog meeting, I got a bunch of responses of the form "well, now that you mention it, it sure would be cool if traceroute...". I also got several requests for our local version (esp. re: MTU discovery). I went through and did a little cleaning up on our version, and then added a couple of new features. The full list of added features in this version is: - Source route - MTU discovery - Statistics reporting - Higher precision timings reported (with caveats...) - Owner email lookup The one thing I didn't add was the prtraceroute function. I would like to add this eventually, but it seemed like a bit longer of a project than what time I had available.
