I don't think IOPS claims to be any kind of "standards organization"... At least their web site seems to indicate this. From the FAQ at http://www.iops.org: How does IOPS.ORG differ from other "Internet organizations"? IOPS.ORG membership comprises companies which provide access and/or transport services for Internet traffic. IOPS.ORG focuses primarily on resolving and on preventing technical and operational problems that require inter-ISP coordination. There are currently several different organizations working on various measurement and performance 'standards' for the Internet and IP-related networks. IETF has created a couple of working groups working on benchmarking and metrics. IOPS says they plan to be a point of contact for developing various industry-wide technical procedures. ATIS/T1 (an ANSI standards organization) is developing two vital Internet performance standards and three technical reports. ANX, The Automotive Network Exchange, has documented several requirements including metrics for service quality. Bellcore has some Internet related work in their new GR standards. And, of course while it doesn't develop anything formal, NANOG has occasional presentations from various other industry organizations. Most of the above have said in their press releases they are working with other standards bodies, but it isn't very clear how much inter- organizational communications actual occurs. And I suspect there are a few more I don't know about. It would be nice if this work could be consolidated into one place. Well, I'm getting very little help from ANS (they are blaming it on Sprint) and NO help from Sprint, so mabye a post here will help... 9 sl-bb4-ana-0-0-0-155M.sprintlink.net (144.232.1.69) 28 msec 24 msec 32 msec 10 h10-1.t16-0.Los-Angeles.t3.ans.net (207.25.133.21) 32 msec 32 msec Packet loss between these two has been 40% or more for weeks now. From our providor (Pilot) this is one of our main paths to anything hosted by ANS on the east coast, so basically at 40% packet loss, we have no connectivity. ANS says Sprint has been aware of this is and is awaiting a "management decision" to upgrade the links. ETA, who knows. Sprint, you listening? BGP community based IP filtering

I've been having an email discussion with a couple of Cisco engineers about how useful BGP community based IP filtering might be. The following IOS config fragment might help explain what I'm getting at: int fddi0 ip access-group community-list 10 in ! ip community-list 10 permit AA:BB ip community-list 10 permit CC:DD ! If you are using communities to make your prefix announcements to peers, this then allows the router to filter incoming IP packets that match your announcements. Excepting things like CPU load, implementation details, etc do you think this would be helpful, or am I way off with this?
