(And my favorite author, too. ;) I honestly expected to get flamed for that post (a bunch of "I told you so's"), but instead I got an overwhelming number of responses offering to help. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. (Even if all of you wouldn't let me get any sleep. :) I am absolutely positive some of the help was offered because the vultures were circling, but some of them were honest offers of help. I think this shows that there is hope for the Internet community yet. In response to the money issue, it is easy for me, as a geek/engineer/operations guy to service the customer and ignore the cost, but I have learned the hard way that money _has_ to be made. I honestly believed (and still do) that if you service the customer right, and charge a fair price, the money will come. The problem is, there's a huge hump you have to get over in a startup, and servicing the customer well makes that hump bigger. Priori just couldn't make it over that hump. Thanx again for helping my customers. They really didn't deserve this. The efforts of people on this list and others probably kept some of them going "down with the ship". If any of you ever need any help with your routes, you got some free engineering coming. :) >Jay R. In this day and age, they are above and beyond what anyone would have expected, but what this really is about is honor. Priori, and Patrick more so, since he was mainly the primary customer interface, was about the customers. It was an organization focused to provide the customers with what they needed when they needed it and at a level of performance above thier expectations. Unfortunately, undercapitalization was too much. Patrick and Priori could do no less for the customers, and even in this we feel as if we are letting them down. Don't forget the people behind the scenes, Jamie Norwood of Priori's NOC has been Patrick's right hand man through this week. The folks at all of the ISP's who jumped in to help, etc. I'll say it for Patrick, thanks for the recognition of the effort. -Chris

AT&T down in St Louis?

I have been working with an AT&T packaged internet service customer on a downed link most of the day. The link died @ around 2:30am CST and has been down ever since. Over the past day of chasing people down, we finally received a call that AT&T is experiencing a hardware failure in or near Saint Louis. Can anyone else confirm this? I've been on the short end of the dying provider stick in the past, and didn't get such service. As much as the providers who are cooperating in servicing Priori's customers during Priori's disintegration (a list of which I'd like to reecive privately, that I might patronize those businesses -- that's behavior I approve of), Patrick and the rest of what's left of Priori's team deserve some credit for doing a great deal more than just calling customers and saying, "We're folding and you're outta luck, so come get your equipment," or worse, simply shutting things down without making even those calls. ag

But Alex, you know that many providers would be delighted to filter out peers' routes on your behalf, as well as not announce you to their peers. Yet they still charge you money, no? One might consider the wonderful old days when UKERNA and DANTE asked ICM to stop announcing to them a large swathe of routes for various reasons. This raises an interesting diagnostic issue which some people run into from time to time when hunting down weird routing problems: how can a third party know what is being announced and thrown away (or just not selected), versus what is not being announced at all?
