Hello; We have been tracking a relay spammer who is using our service to relay spam through many sites. We have, logs, packet traces, addresses, etc. and law enforcement officers ready to swoop down. We are missing a key bit of evidence, the actual spam. Therefore, if anyone has received spam via the following relays: 146.115.206.2.25 163.125.37.13.25 168.75.225.2.25 192.41.78.2.25 199.217.147.30.25 206.149.103.3.25 207.90.244.4.25 208.129.78.172.25 208.166.218.20.25 209.44.59.9.25 especially originating from 208.3.82.13, please forward it to me *with* *full* *e-mail* *headers*. regards, fletcher

Domain fees to rise...

It appears that the government has received permission to raise the domain fees back to $50. http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,26004,00.html Interestingly, the article continues to indicate that the additional fee is, in fact, a tax, and the NSF's *agent*, Network Solutions, will collect it on the Government's behalf. Must be irritating for a foreign entity to be forced to pay a US tax for an international resource. Wasn't there something like this that created an uproar in Boston Harbor? /rlj

Mother's day is the busiest day for the U.S. voice telephone network. The Friday after Thanksgiving is the busiest day for U.S. public libraries. U.S. electrical demand forecast increased 3% this summer compared to last year. The movie Titanic reach $600 million dollars domestic box office last weekend. The Internet has the September effect, maybe. Generally the previous numbers come from self-reported numbers from companies in the various industries. The NSFNET used to report total traffic growth. After the NSFNET was shutdown, the NAPs reported aggregate traffic at those points. Although there are obvious problems with any single point measurements of the Internet, they did give everyone a gross starting point. Much of our collective notion about the hyper-growth of the Internet came from these numbers. But if you look at the public numbers for Internet traffic, its still growing but at a slower rate. So what is going on? Internet growth has slowed. Internet growth is being constrained by some factor. If you add up the numbers at the NAPs, there is currently no single backbone in existence able to carry the entire Internet load. Even the new OC-48 networks announced by AGIS and Sprint are too small. Internet growth continues at its previous rate, but the public measurements no longer capture it. Do overall measurements of the Internet serve any useful purpose either for network engineering or investor information. Gordon does not mention where she obtained her information that she used to develop her misguided plan. Gordon also does not address the fact that Neal Lane was not helpful to Linda Sundro to get it right. Gordon seems to imply that left to his own decision-making Neal Lane would get it right. Gordon fails to point out that Neal Lane WAS the one making the decisions, not Linda Sundro. I suppose this means that Gordon is happy with the decisions that were made and is now more happy that Neal Lane, the decision-maker had moved to the White House to continue making decisions. Some people have claimed that the NSF is what is being replaced by the so-called IANA Inc. or NewCo. It appears to me that the NSF was pushed aside long ago by the White House and the Department of Commerce. It is interesting that Neal Lane would move to the White House who now has taken control of the InterNIC. The White House does not seem to want the job. It appears that the White Paper will result in several groups bidding for the InterNIC job. Maybe the Congress will have to help them sort out who should get the contracts. One thing for sure, it does not look like the NSF will be making any more of those decisions. At one point in time, the Inspector General of the NSF, Linda Sundro was trying to figure out what was going on. If you read some of her reports to congress, you will see that she was not able to figure out what was really going on. She has now resigned and a temporary IG is in place. Recently, the Director of the NSF has been replaced. The former Director, Neal Lane has supposedly been moved to the White House to an office that sounds similar to the role that Ira Magaziner has. It is unclear why Neal Lane was moved, but letters from him about Linda Sundro's activities show that he was not cooperative with her attempts to figure out what was going on. The NSF has a $3.8 billion dollar per year (and growing) annual budget. Some of that goes to MERIT and helps to fund mailing lists like this. It is too bad that the people at the NSF are lost in a sea of information that they help to fund. Their solution seems to be to stir the waters and make sure that the people and story keep changing. The Congress apparently has little or no ability to figure out what is going on because they are kept in the dark in a boat floating on the murky waters. If they stick their hand in the water a shark might take it away. The Congress has not figured out that the solution might be to drain the swamp. With the NSF up to their ears in sharks, their solution is to keep throwing the sharks more food. Public Domain NAT for Solaris? (off topic)

I've been trying to break out some of the CIDR block to customers using NAT translations. I have been successful for Cisco routers using IOS 11.2 on up and with some of the Ascend gear (still trying to figure out 6.0 for the P130) My question is, are there any public domain sources for a NAT translator on a Solaris box that has two or more interfaces? I need something quick and dirty to put at some customer sites and I don't have immediate access to anything else... Yet another way to look

(sorry about duplicates) For your viewing pleasure I've taken the 7-Sep-98 ASN delegation file from the ARIN ftp site and stuffed it into the RDI.INT zone. Won't give you the prefixes associated with the ASN, but it does get you another way to look up the contact for a given ASN. (there are some formating problems will will be fixed later) If the contact for any given ASN would like to re-map that entry to their own servers so they can indicate which prefixes they are willing to announce (sort of like the 4555.rdi.int example) they can. And NO, you don;t have to do all that RPSL stuff if you don't want to. The only way to check authoritative announcements is if the prefix delegates add an entry into the in-addr.arpa zones that they maintain to indicate which ASN is expected to be the authoritative announcer for said prefix. If there is interest, I'll keep the zone current with regular updates from ARIN. I don't know if the other RIRs (RIPE, APNIC) update ARIN on a regular basis. If not I can add the information from those registries as well. Comments are appreciated.
